Graceville Rallies For Win Over Malone

By Clint Cox

GRACEVILLE – For 6 ½ innings last Friday night Malone was in full control of their district rival Graceville. But Malone saw their 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning vanish, and then Garrett Steverson put the final nail in the coffin with a walk off grand slam to propel Graceville to a 11-9 win.
Malone jumped out to an early lead in their first at bat as Blake Hinson’s RBI single scored a run. Aaron Conrad’s RBI single scored Kevin Warren and then Jeffery Pittman’s RBI single scored Conrad. Dayvon Larry capped off the inning with a 3 run home run to put Malone up 6-0. Graceville managed a run in their first at bat but Malone added another run in both the second and third innings. Graceville countered with a run in the bottom of the third inning as Justin Miles scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2 in favor of Malone.
Miles entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of Tyler Crutchfield and began to cool the Malone bats. Over the next 3 2/3 innings Malone managed only one run as Warren reached on an error and then scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning. Meanwhile Malone starter Derek Orshall had kept the Graceville bats quite for the most part and Malone held a 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
That is when the wheels began to come off for Malone, as Graceville quickly jumped on Malone relief pitcher Aaron Conrad. Steverson led off the inning with a double and then Aaron Taylor singled. Steverson was able to score on a throwing error to make it 9-3. Joey Sports followed with a single and then Jacky Miles reached on an error that also allowed Taylor to score. Jordan Cox then stroked an RBI single deep into left field to score Sports and then Jacky Miles scored on a double steal to make it a 9-6 game. Chris Willis pounded out a RBI double to score Cox and pull Graceville to within just two runs. Orshall was reinserted into the game and faced off against Steverson as Graceville had batted around. After going to a full count, Steverson stroked a shot over the left field wall that brought home four Graceville Tigers and the win.
Both squads were coming off wins from the night before as Graceville (3-6) had beaten Bethlehem and with the win over Malone improved to 3-6 on the season. Malone had pulled off their own rally, edging Cottondale 9-8 in a come from behind victory. With the loss to Graceville Malone fell to 6-2.

Indians Split Conference Openers

By Clint Cox
The Chipola Indians baseball squad opened up the 2009 Panhandle Conference season with a split, winning on Friday in Pensacola and then falling at home on Saturday to Tallahassee. They got the conference schedule off to a good start with a 10-0 win over the Pirates as Pat Corbin went the distance and pitched the shutout against the defending Panhandle Conference Champions. Chipola had the hot bats as they stroked four home runs, with two coming from Joey Rapp. Marc Bourgeois came up with a home run and Andy Fermin stroked a grand slam to lead the Indians offensively.
For as well as they played on Friday, Saturday’s contest against Tallahassee turned out to be a different story. The game was tied at 36-36 at the half after Chipola had trailed by as many as 7 points during the first half. The Indians pulled out ahead in the second half by as many as 12 points, but Gulf Coast rallied in the closing minutes with some hot shooting from beyond the 3 point line. Three Jackson County basketballs squads found the going rough last week during the FHSAA Playoffs. The Cottondale Lady Hornets had made the trip to Lakeland for the Final Four but fell in the Semi-Finals 48-25 to First Academy. Cottondale struggled early on and trailed 14-4 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime they trailed 32-14 as they just could not seem to get going offensively. They actually played even basketball in the second half as both squads posted 16 second half points. Cottondale was led on the day by Shaunte Forward with 8 points and Khadejah Ward with 6 points. The Lady Hornets finished the season with an impressive 21-6 record under first year Head Coach Laura Holman.
In boy’s basketball both Graceville and Cottondale fell in their respective Regional Finals. The Graceville Tigers traveled to Gainesville to take on The Rock. With no starters under 6’2" and a front line of 6’10" and 6’8" The Rock was too much for the Tigers and posted a 54-21 win. Graceville was led by Chris Works and Bryon Laster with 6 points each. The Tigers, who closed the season with a 4-1 run, finished the season 16-12.
The Cottondale Hornets traveled to Eastpoint to take on Franklin County, the new school that resulted from the consolidation of Apalachicola and Carrabelle. The Seahawks prevailed in a 49-39 victory. Cottondale fell behind early 9-2 and from there tried to play catch up all game long. Jacob Herring led the way with 11 points as Cottondale finished the season 19-11.
