Bulldogs & Pirates Wrap Up Spring on High Notes

All coaches want to end their spring practices with good outings so that they can head into the summer workout programs on a positive note. Two of the county’s four football programs did just that this past week. The Marianna Bulldogs played host to the Cougars of Northview (Dothan) last Thursday night and were impressive in a 34-14 win. The format was not that of a regulation game but rather one of each team being on offense for one entire quarter. The third quarter was a regulation quarter and the fourth quarter saw the respective junior varsity squads take to the field.

The Bulldogs went on defense the first quarter and held the Cougars in check most of the time. Northview lined up to attempt a field goal on the last play and a Bulldog came up with a blocked kick that was scooped up by Tre Jackson and returned 60 yards for a touchdown. In the second quarter Marianna went on offense and rotated prospective quarterbacks. Hakeem Holmes and Michael Mader took turns running the offense and both showed plenty of promise. On the first possession Marianna scored on a 55 yard run by Scooter Barnes to go up 12-0. Mader led the Bulldogs on their next possession to another score, this one coming on a 7 yard run by Jackson. Elliott Batson added the two point conversion run and the Bulldogs took a 20-0 lead. The two teams took a break before coming back for a third quarter, regulation style. Holmes led the Bulldogs on the first drive and they marched right down the field. Holmes, Barnes, Jackson and Chris Bowers all had big runs on the drive. Bowers bulled his way in for a score from 1 yard out to make it 26-0. Northview finally got some offense going as the Bulldogs went to some substitutions on defense and cut the Marianna led to 26-14. Mader came in to lead the Bulldogs and got a 60 yard by Jackson for a score. Batson added another two point run to put Marianna up 34-14.

The Sneads Pirates loaded up their boat and headed down river to Wewahitchka to take part in a three team jamboree. The Pirates took on the Gators in the first half and beat the host team 22-8. Xavier Eutsay had a big offensive night as he rushed for 150 yards and two scores. One of those scores came on the third play of the half. The Gators responded though with a score and two point conversion to tie the game at 8-8. The Pirates then got their second score from Eutsay on a long run. John Locke then put the final nail in the Gator’s coffin as he picked off a Wewa pass and returned it 65 yards for a score. The Pirates second half came against the always tough Sharks of Port St. Joe. Neither team could break through the other team’s defense and the first quarter was scoreless. The second quarter was more of the same and was scoreless until the closing seconds. Port St. Joe scored with under 25 seconds to play and captured a 7-0 win. Newcomer at QB, Blade Osborne played well as did the offensive and defensive lines for the Pirates.

Hornets and Tigers Struggle in Spring Games

Jackson County’s two western football teams closed out their spring practice season with both electing to play a regulation game as opposed to a jamboree format. The Cottondale Hornets traveled to Bonifay last Friday night to take on the Holmes County Blue Devils and fell 35-12. The Hornets had kept things close in the first half, trailing by just two points at 14-12. But the second half was all Holmes County as they rolled up 21 unanswered points. After the Blue Devils took an early 7-0 lead Cottondale responded with a drive and touchdown of their own. Evan Davis took it in from 10 yards out for the score to make it 7-6. Holmes County posted another score to take a 14-6 lead but once again the Hornets fought back. This time it came on a 20 yard pass from C.J. Smith to Cody Saye. The Hornets failed to convert the two point play and trailed by two when the first half ended.

The Graceville Tigers played host to the Bulldogs of Freeport on Tuesday night and found the going rough. Freeport scored early and often in the first half and held a 25-0 lead at the end of the first half. The Tigers played better in the second half, holding the Bulldogs scoreless and moving the ball at times of offense. But offensively they never were able to string together enough successful plays to sustain an long drives or score any points. Jacky Miles took the helm at QB and had some nice runs and seemed to find a good target in Allante Oliver-Barnes. The duo hooked up for three nice passing plays that picked up good yardage and first downs. Darae Laster had some nice runs in the game as well. Jeremy Watford also ran the ball well at times but the trio, Miles, Laster and Watford, also found themselves hammered by the Bulldog defense on a regular occurrence as the Tiger offensive line had trouble holding out the ‘Dogs. The Tigers battled hard and had one last drive to try and get on the scoreboard. Miles picked up a first down on a nice scramble and then hooked up with Oliver-Barnes to get to the Bulldog 14 yard line with less than a minute to play. But the final horns sounded with the Tigers at the Bulldog 4 yard line and unable to get into the end zone.

This Father’s Day - Think Fishing

Make this Father’s Day one for families, summer fun and tradition by going fishing in Florida, the Fishing Capital of the World. Surprise Dad with a family fishing outing and a 5-year freshwater fishing license, or give him an opportunity to catch a Florida bass worth a million dollars.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), partnering with the Get Outdoors Florida! Coalition encourages families to enjoy the pleasures of recreational fishing in Florida. Besides, June is Great Outdoors Month, officially designated by President Barack Obama and many of the country’s governors, including Florida’s.

“Great Outdoors Month will encourage cooperative conservation and new technologies to help ensure America’s outdoors remain places where families and friends can learn, exercise and create meaningful memories,” said Gov. Charlie Crist.

Other special outdoor designations in June include National Trails Day, National Fishing and Boating Week, National Get Outdoors Day and the Great American Backyard Campout. Visit GetOutdoorsFlorida.org to learn about events scheduled in Florida.

If you buy a 5-year freshwater fishing license, the FWC will send a special incentive package with free tackle, publications and fishing accessories. A 5-year license costs just $79, plus a convenience fee, and while you have your license, you won’t have to worry about future fee increases. For most, that’s barely a dollar per fishing trip, for healthy, relaxing recreation that allows Dad to connect with family and friends in a fun, stress-free environment. Maybe he’ll even take home a free meal or two.

The bonus package includes “hook, line and sinker:”

• Free hooks from Tru-Turn and Owner; and jigs from Fish Vision;

• A free spool of Spiderwire fishing line from Berkley;

• Lead-free sinkers from Bullet Weights;

• Biodegradable lures from Fish Bites and Stubby Steve's;

• Catch-and-Release (Sure Life) for your livewell;

• A retractor for your angling tools (Power Pole);

• Instructions and special "Fishhook Removal String."

Also in the package is literature to help plan a safe-and-sustainable fishing trip and coupons for:

• Fishing or paddling trips (Bass Online, Canoe Outpost),

• Educational programs (Ladies, Let's Go Fishing);

• Fuel supplements (Fuel Medics) for your boat motor; and

• Polarized fishing sunglasses (Ocean Waves).

Five-year licenses are available at MyFWC.com or by calling 888-347-4356. If his license hasn't expired, you can order a 5-year license now and set the effective date for up to 60 days after purchase. The package typically arrives in three to four weeks, so act now to have it by Father's Day.

This offer will be available through Father's Day; however, to make sure you are one of the first 3,000 and get the package, visit MyFWC.com/Fishing now.

Here's another option: the million-dollar bass. BountyFishing.com provides anglers an opportunity to compete in fishing contests to win cash and prizes from their favorite fishing spots. To promote catch-and-release fishing, BountyFishing uses FBI-strength image-analysis software to validate winners based on catch photos. They also host an online fishing community that posts photos, shares stories, and discusses fishing topics. For a free trial offer of an Internet-managed fishing tournament, visit www.bountyfishing.com/FL. BountyFishing will share part of your tournament fees with the Wildlife Foundation of Florida, Inc, a non-profit, public support organization that enhances FWC conservation efforts.

BountyFishing shares information with the FWC as part of the FWC initiative to create a new Black Bass Management Plan. The plan is being developed with input from the public (see MyFWC.com/BassPlan_Survey) and will require a variety of innovative data sources to document current and future conditions. FWC biologists are certain a largemouth bass exceeding the current official record of 17 pounds, 4 ounces (set in July 1986) is waiting to be caught. In 2008, an 18-pound, 8-ounce bass was caught and released in Florida. It exceeded the record but was not certified by an FWC biologist (nor was a 20-pound, 2-ounce hawg hooked in 1923).

To encourage bass anglers to catch and properly report the next state record, BountyFishing is hosting a Million Dollar Bass Bounty. The contest is open to anglers legally fishing in any public body of water in Florida from July 5 to Aug. 1. Sign-up costs $7 per day or $19 for one week, but the first 1,000 will receive a 50-percent discount and pay just $38 for all four weeks. To sign up for the Florida Million Dollar Bass Bounty or a free June fishing tournament, visit www.bountyfishing.com/FL.

Take your pick: invite Dad out for a fun fishing outing this Father's Day, buy him a 5-year license and get a bunch of fishing goodies, or sign him up for a BountyFishing.com tournament. Whichever you choose, you'll help him reconnect with nature and a great American pastime while sharing quality time relaxing on the water together.

Chipola Softball Falls In National Tournament

Sitting on the left field grass on Field 1 at the 2010 NJCAA National Softball Tournament in St. George, Utah, the tears of disappointment and sighs of exhaustion filled the air.  Taking time to spend their final moments on the field before joining their families, the Lady Indians gathered together to support each other and briefly think about everything they have accomplished together this year. After nearly eight straights hours under the hot Utah sun, it was a well-deserved time of reflection. “I am so proud of how hard our team fought all year long,” said Chipola coach Belinda Hendrix.  “Coming into the season, nobody predicted we would accomplish anything close to competing for the national championship.”

After what could only be described as a mysterious semi-final game versus Miami-Dade; in which a grand slam was overturned, another homerun was allowed by an ineligible player, and Chipola was defeated 16-7, the Lady Indians were forced into an elimination game against Seminole State College. Facing elimination, Chipola and Seminole traded defensive stops throughout the game until late in the game when Seminole would jump out to a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.  However, the heart of the Lady Indians was not ready to leave St. George without proving once again the true sign of a Chipola team.

In the bottom of the seventh, Hannah Lovestrand and Selentia Pittman both reached on infield singles before Michelle Hewett doubled to score pinch-runner Haley Adkison and move Pittman to third.  Nikki Roddy then sacrificed to deep center field that allowed Pittman to score and Hewett to advance to third.  With two outs, Ariell van Hook appeared to line out at first, however, as Seminole was running off the field to celebrate the win, assistant coach Jimmy Hendrix inquired about an illegal substitution by Seminole.  After a conferencing of officials, it was determine that Ariell would be given the opportunity to return to the batter’s box and the game would continue.

Two pitches later, van Hook would drive a pitch to deep left field that would score Hewett at third base.  With two outs and van Hook standing on first base, Trish Bliss stepped to the plate in hopes of extending the game.  Having had a grand slam reversed on a baffling call earlier in the game versus Miami-Dade, Bliss put the past behind her and connected on a two-run home run to tie the game 6-6 and send the game into extra innings. Nevertheless, Seminole would score three runs in the top of the ninth to retake the lead 9-6 and Chipola would be eliminated in the bottom of the ninth when they were unable to plate the needed runs.

In the opening rounds of the tournament on Thursday Chipola had beaten Georgia Perimeter 7-4 and Chattanooga State 10-4. In round three on Friday they Lady Indians lost their first game 16-7 to Miami Dade. The Lady Sharks of Miami Dade went on to capture the National Championship with a 7-0 win over Wallace State on Saturday.

Looking back on the season, the Chipola Lady Indians earned an impressive overall record of 49-13 and reclaimed both the coveted State Championship and Panhandle Conference Championship.

Bulldog Football Mourns Loss Of Snelgrove

The Marianna Bulldog football family has been in mourning this past week as former Bulldog player Jake Snelgrove was laid to rest on Tuesday. Snelgrove, who passed away last Friday, was a two year starter for the Bulldogs in the 2004 and 2005 seasons. But he was much more than just a football player to the program.

He served as a ball boy for the team as a youngster and eagerly awaited the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of his older brother Jesse, who also played for the Bulldogs during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. Jesse wore the #58 and was elected team captain during his senior season. Jake tasted success early in Bulldog football when he was a member of the junior varsity team that went unbeaten in 2002. To no one’s surprise he claimed and wore the #58 just like his older brother. And when he was a senior (2005 season), just like his older brother, Jake was elected team captain by his teammates. He played both ways, lining up as a guard on offense and an end on defense. While not quite as big as his older brother, Jake had some of those intangibles that coaches love. “He was kind of undersized for a lineman,” said John Donaldson, who coached the offensive and defensive lines when both Snelgroves played at Marianna. “But as a coach you wished that you had a 100 more kids just like Jake. He worked hard and did everything we asked of him,” added Donaldson. That seemed to be a recurring theme of others who coached him. Don Dowling, currently Head Football Coach at Sneads, was the Head Football Coach at Marianna for five years. “Jake was with me for four of those five years. He was easy to coach and did exactly what you told him to do. He loved Lynard Skynard and their song “Simple Man”. He used to tell me ‘Just keep it simple Coach and we’ll take care of it,” Dowling fondly recalled.

Those intangibles didn’t just start in high school according to Daryl Williams, who coached Snelgrove in city league youth football and baseball. “Jake was a blessing to coach. He was one of those kids that if the coach told him to jump off a four story building he would do it. He trusted what the coaches were telling him that much. His loss is a real tragedy,” said Williams.

Dowling said the loss of a young man is always difficult, but Jake’s loss has been especially tough on the players, families and coaches associated with those teams. “You know we lost Justin a little over two years ago and it is just really hard to take,” Dowling said referring to the loss of Snelgrove’s teammate, friend and former Bulldog Justin Burch in October of 2008. Dowling had known both since they were kids as both Snelgrove and Burch had been ball boys for Bulldog Football while Dowling served as an assistant coach.

Long Becomes A Wildcat

After four years of being a purple and gold Bulldog, Marianna’s Tre Long will now become a green and gold Wildcat. Long signed a letter of intent to play basketball and attend college at Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Alabama. The Bulldog basketball program has had much success over the last few years and according to Head Coach Travis Blanton, Long is one of the reasons. “Tre has had a great four years here at Marianna. He is one of the individuals that makes everyone around him, especially the younger guys, better off for being around him. It’s been an honor for me to have coached such a fine young man like Tre,” Blanton told the crowd of well wishers.
While Long has been in the Marianna basketball program the teams have recorded 20 plus wins each season and made it to the FHSAA Sweet 16 twice and the Final Four twice. During the past season Long did a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs, averaged 14 points per ball game, along with 6 rebounds, 3 assist and 3 steals. In a testament to how the other players looked up to Long his teammates elected him as team captain in both his junior and senior seasons.
Long addressed the crowd of well wishers that came to watch him sign on the dotted line. “I want to thank God, my family, friends, teachers and coaches for all they’ve done for me. Coach Blanton told me four years ago that if I wanted this I could get it. I’ve worked hard and that hard work has paid off,” said Long.
Long, who also played football for the Bulldogs, is the son of Charlene and Patrick Long.

Chipola Area Gator Club Held its Annual Smoked Steak Dinner

The dinner was held on Tuesday night, May 4th, at the Agricultural Center.

FWC Launches Climate Change Website

Find out what fish and wildlife managers are doing to help wildlife adapt to potential climate change impacts. Measure your carbon footprint. Tap into age-appropriate climate change lessons. These exciting features and more can be found on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) new website, MyFWC.com/ClimateChange. The website is dedicated to educating the public about the impacts of climate change to the state’s fish and wildlife resources and how the agency is addressing those impacts.

“We hope the FWC climate change website will become a must-visit resource for individuals and organizations wanting to learn more about climate change and its impact on wildlife,” said Doug Parsons, the FWC’s climate change program coordinator. “The FWC has established itself as a leader nationally on this issue, and we look forward to working with our wildlife partners to improve the information on the website as this issue unfolds in the years to come.”

Florida’s geography and position as home to threatened and endangered wildlife puts the state in a unique position for experiencing the effects of climate change. Acknowledging that fact, the FWC began addressing climate change in 2007, when the commission passed a resolution directing staff to develop recommendations for conserving fish and wildlife in the face of climate change. In 2008, the FWC hosted a climate change summit, which brought together leading experts and professionals in the field to share their knowledge. Immediately following the summit, the FWC formed climate change teams. The website confirms the FWC’s commitment to addressing this complex issue.

Sneads Carlisle Rose Garden Club Hosted it’s 5th Annual Dog Show

The show was first scheduled for April 24th, but it was cancelled due to inclement weather, and was rescheduled and took place on Saturday, May 15, 2010.
A total of 14 dogs were registered for the fun event. The show itself bore little resemblance to the Westminster, instead, the show was small-town charming, and the dogs were clearly amateurs. Helen Grice, event chairman believes the weather and the economy played a big role in the number of pet owner/ dogs and spectators this year.
Most of the handlers this year were children who were so proud to escort their dog on a promenade around the area. Sometimes they paused to sniff the grass, or leave something behind or maybe they just wanted to be carried.
The Hound Dog Café served pulled pork plates, hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks.
The money raised will go toward the further beautification of Sneads. The Yellow Rose Garden at the Post Office is courtesy of the club.
The club wishes to thank the judges, Cheryl McDaniel, Jeremy Branch, Kelly Barfoot, and Charlotte Garner, also Dillon Kilpatrick, American Legion Post 241, and all merchants/organizations, and participants who helped make this event possible. We are most grateful to each and everyone.

Area High Schools Wrapping Up Spring Football

All four Jackson County high school football programs have been busy the past three weeks with spring practice. Spring practice will come to a close this week as all four teams will take part in their respective games.
The Cottondale Hornets were awful young last season and managed just one win in the 2009 campaign. But the Hornets are hopeful that their fortunes will be better this season now that some of those younger players have more experience. They return 8 starters on offense and 9 starters on defense. On the offensive line they return Chris Krauser, Ronnie Dixon and Neal Walker. C.J. Smith, who shared time at QB last year as a freshman, will be the likely starter this year as a sophomore. One of his primary duties will be handing the ball off to Dominique Webb, who returns this season after leading the squad in rushing last season. Defensively for the Hornets returners include Juwon Johnson at cornerback and Webb returns and will play either safety or corner. Cottondale, under long time coach Mike Melvin, concludes their spring practice with a spring game against Holmes County on May 21st in Bonifay at 7 pm.
The Graceville Tigers are also hoping to improve on last season as the Tigers went 3-7 and missed out on the FHSAA playoffs for the first time since the 2004 season. The Tigers saw their two leading ball carriers, Leron Hoover and Treyshaun White, graduate. The offensive line also lost three key blockers so filling those five spots has been a priority during the spring. Returning linemen include Leander Ford, Hunter Lain, Curtis Pinkard and Leon Woulard. David Miller or JT Russaw will be the likely starter at the center position. Carrying the mail will be Jeremy Watford, Derae Laster and Conner Renihan, all of whom saw action last year as backups. On Tuesday May 25th Graceville, under the direction of Head Coach Todd Wertenberger, will play host to Freeport in their spring game.
The Marianna Bulldogs headed into the spring under second year Head Coach Steve DeWitt. The Bulldogs have several task to be working on like finding a starting quarterback. Fidel Montgomery has graduated and will be headed to Troy University so the Bulldog must find a replacement. Hakeem Holmes saw some playing time last year at QB as a sophomore and will see action again. Micheal Mader, a familiar name to baseball fans, has come out for football and the QB spot. Hakeem knows our system and Michael has done well also. Both will see action in our spring game this Thursday,” said DeWitt. The Bulldogs will play host to Northview (Dothan) Thursday night at 6:30 pm. The Bulldogs have spent a good portion of their spring focusing on defense, an admitted weak link from last year. “We didn’t have problems scoring last year (averaged 28 points per game) but we did have trouble stopping folks. So we’ve worked real hard on that and I think we’ll see improvement on that side of the ball,” said DeWitt. While not singling out any particular player, DeWitt has liked what he has seen this spring from his soon to be seniors.
The Sneads Pirates have been having a good spring according to third year Head Coach Don Dowling. “I like what I’ve been seeing from our guys. They’ve been working real hard.” Dowling said. They’ll need that hard work because they must replace some fine talent that has graduated including almost their entire offensive backfield. Gone is Mark Lawson who rushed for more than a 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior season. Also gone are Terrence Green and Jeff Davis. The Pirates have been working on replacing Green at the QB spot and four guys have been battling. Going into their spring jamboree it looks like Blade Osborne has the slight edge with T.J. Granger right behind him. Both will see playing time in the Pirates Jamboree in Wewahitchka on Friday night. Aaron Green and Trent McDaniel may also take a few snaps under center as well. Senior Jamar White returns at the fullback position but the other running backs are all young and inexperienced. Delontre Keys, Keontez Daniels, Ron Brown, Jaylon Daniels and John Locke will all have a shot at toting the pigskin for the Pirates. The young backfield however may be helped out by the fact that the Pirates return most of their starting offensive line. The jamboree in Wewa on Friday night will feature Sneads, Wewa and Blountstown.

Lady Indians Get Underway At National Tournament

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Lady Indians softball team left on Monday en route to St. George Utah for the NJCAA National Softball Tournament. Play is scheduled to begin on Thursday the 19th and run through Saturday the 22nd. The Lady Indians took a bus to New Orleans where they were scheduled to fly out of for the trip out west. Chipola will enter the tournament as the #2 seed and with a record of 47-11. They will attempt to capture their second national championship having won their first in 2007.

The Lady Indians begin play on Thursday with an opening round matchup against the #15 seed in Georgia Perimeter (28-13). That game is scheduled for 11:30 am central time. If the ladies can win that contest they would play again Thursday night at 6 pm central time against the winner of Chattanooga State versus Odessa College. A loss in their opening round game would have them play the loser of Chattanooga versus Odessa at 3:30 pm.

Chipola, ranked #3 in the nation in the last poll dated 4/28/10, is coming off an impressive stretch of victories as they went 5-0 in the FCCAA State Softball Tournament three weeks ago. That included a 14-0 drubbing of the Miami Dade in the championship game. The Lady Sharks were ranked #2 in the nation. That 5-0 run in the state tournament upped them to 16-1 in their last 17 games. But one concern for Coach Belinda Hendrix is that the opening round game against Georgia Perimeter on the 19th will be the Lady Indians first live game in 18 days. “With so much time between winning the state tournament and playing in the national tournament, we’ve paced ourselves with practices,” said Chipola Coach Belinda Hendrix.  “We were able to fine tune some areas of game defensively and work with our hitters.”

The Lady Indians will be familiar with six of the sixteen teams in the tournament. They have played and beaten Chattanooga State and Miami Dade. They fell to Salt Lake (ranked #1 in the nation) and Yavapai (defending national champions) back in January in a season opening tournament in Nevada. They also have one run losses to Wallace State (Al) and Seminole State (OK) that occurred back in February and March.

All Chipola games can be heard live on the radio at WJAQ 100.9 FM. All games at the NJCAA National Tournament can be viewed on the internet at www.psblive.com.

Indians Ousted From State Tournament

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Indians baseball squad found the FCCAA State Baseball Tournament to be very similar to their season. They played well at times but also struggled at times. Those struggles led to their elimination from the tournament on Saturday in a 7-5 loss to Miami-Dade. “Our play down here in Lakeland has been a microcosm of our year,” Johnson said after the game. “We gave up some walks and committed some costly errors. We battled back and had a chance at the end but just could not come up with the big hits when we needed them the most,” Johnson added.

Saturday’s game pitted the Indians against a speedy bunch of Sharks from Miami-Dade and Chipola fell behind early 4-0. in the top of the third inning. The Indians battled back to tie the game though by plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning and two more in the bottom of the fifth. But the Sharks struck again in the top of the sixth with three runs to take a 7-4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth Chipola plated another run and had runners in scoring positions. But with the heart of their batting order at the plate the Indians could not come up with the needed hit and fell by two runs in the contest.

The Indians started the tournament on Thursday with a 16-10 slugfest loss to Palm Beach State. It was an offensive showcase as the two squads combined for 25 hits and six home runs. Chipola trailed for most of the game but rallied to take a 10-8 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Just when the Indians had grabbed the momentum the rains came and forced a 30 minute rain delay. When play resumed Palm Beach plated seven runs to reclaim the lead and went on to the six run win. Eric Sauls had a big day going 2-4 with two home runs and five RBI.

That dropped the Indians into a loser bracket matchup on Friday against St. Johns River Community College. The game was scoreless through 5 ½ innings when the Indians struck for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Indian pitchers Rodney Quintero and Duncan Midkiff held St. Johns to just one run to seal the win and advance the Indians to Saturday’s matchup against Miami Dade.

Marianna’s Tyler Wilson had an outstanding tournament as he went 5-7 (.714) with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Cody Martin went 4-8 with a home run, four runs scored and a RBI. Josh Allen had a solid tournament as well going 4-11 with three RBI and a run scored. Andy Fermin was 4-13 with two runs scored and a RBI. Chipola, who entered the tournament ranked #7 in the state, finished the season with a record of 27-25.

2010 State Agricultural Mechanics Reserve Champions

Florida FFA is pleased to announce the results of the 2010 State Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event (CDE). The Agricultural Mechanics event was held Saturday, April 24, 2010 in Polk County. Nine (9) teams from throughout Florida gathered to compete for the state championship. Malone FFA finished 2nd in the state in this competition. The purpose of the Agricultural Mechanics Career Development Event (CDE) is to stimulate student interest in the five areas of the agricultural mechanics industry: machinery and equipment systems, industry and marketing systems, energy systems, structural systems, and environmental & natural resource systems.
Florida FFA is very appreciative of the support of our event coordinators David Byrd and Hal Moon. Malone FFA would like to thank Spanish Trail Lumber Company, Corey Trawick, and Lambe’s Welding for the donation of money and/or time to help the Ag Mechanics Team compete. The contest Saturday consisted of a 40 minute test, a rotation through 10 group tasks, and five individual tasks. Before lunch the team had taken their test and rotated through ten group activities including: inventorying PVC parts, surveying, calibrating a sprayer, constructing drip irrigation, etc. The afternoon individual activities included: electrical circuits, welding, parts manuals, setting a torque wrench, chemicals and their disposal, and much more.
Malone’s Team members include: Jeffrey Peeler, Sam Robison, Rett Daniels, and Cody Ferguson. These same young men competed last year in the state competition and came in 9th. What a way for four senior friends to end their high school FFA career than to become the 2010 Florida FFA State Ag Mechanics Reserve Champions!!
A special congratulation goes to Jeffrey Peeler. Jeffrey was High Individual in this contest. He will go on stage at State FFA Convention in June to receive a trophy for his accomplishment and be recognized as a member of the 2nd place team in the state.

Beware of Cogon Grass

Cogon grass (Imperata cylindrica) is an invasive, non-native grass which occurs in Florida and several other southeastern states. A pest in 73 countries, and considered to be one of the “Top 10 Worst Weeds in the World”, cogon grass affects pine productivity and survival, wildlife habitat, recreation, native plants, fire behavior, site management costs and more.
Identifying Cogon Grass
How to Recognize Cogon Grass
Cogon grass is a tall (2-5 ft.) perennial grass with bright yellowy-green foliage. The leaf blades have a mid-vein which is clearly offset to one side, and serrated (toothed) edges. The rhizomes are hard, scaly, and cream-colored with sharply pointed tips. The seed head is fuzzy, white, and plume-like (see images above).
Cogon grass invasion in Central FL upland pine sites
Common Locations for Cogon Grass
Cogon grass is found on roadsides, mining sites, borrow pits, and other areas of soil disturbance, and is able to invade moist to dry upland pine sites, After the initial invasion, cogon grass often forms dense, field-like monocultures.
Cogon grass spreads readily on disturbed sites and through movement of soil contaminated with small pieces of rhizome or seed (often due to site disturbance in timber harvest, site preparation, road grading, use of contaminated fill dirt, etc.). Cogon grass infestations can reduce pine survival and growth, and in fire situations, may result in complete mortality of overstory trees due to flammable oils in the grass blades raising the intensity and severity of prescribed burns. Over time cogon grass may significantly impact management and productivity of pines on infested sites.
Regulatory Status
Due to the damaging effects of cogon grass invasion, cogon grass is listed as a noxious weed by both the state and federal levels. See list of regulations and ordinances at . http://www.fl-dof.com/forest_management/fh_invasives_laws.html
Some Treatment Recommendations
Prevention
Avoid soil disturbance, timber harvest, fire, etc. unless as a part of a specific treatment regime. Always clean equipment after operating in infested areas.
Mechanical/Cultural
Mow or prescribed burn prior to herbicide application to remove built-up thatch and promote active growth herbicide uptake. Do not mow when seedheads are present. Do not burn without a follow-up herbicide treatment.
Chemical
Allow 12 inches of re-sprout before applying
herbicide. Most managers recommend a foliar application of 2% glyphosate (eg. Roundup/Accord), or 1-1.5% imazapyr (eg. Arsenal/Chopper) (be aware of soil activity), or a tank mix of the two herbicides. Apply herbicide by spraying all foliage just until wet to the point of run-off. Links to Identification and Control Guides. (http://www.fl-dof.com/forest_management/fh_invasives_links.html#guides)
Timing
If you can only do one treatment a year, apply your treatment in the fall before the first frost. Otherwise, re-treat regularly whenever adequate foliar re-sprout has occurred.

CHIPOLA WINS STATE SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Chipola Lady Indians captured the 2010 FCCAA State and Region VIII Championship with a 14-0 win over Miami-Dade on May 2.
Chipola, which beat State College of Florida for the second time in two days by the final 13-8 to capture the FCCAA Gulf District Championship and is ranked third in the country, will now advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in St. George, Utah.
From an outstanding pitching performance all day from Brittany Black, Emma Stevenson, and Skylar Davis, the Lady Indians were finally able to connect with the bats in the final day; 20 hits in game one versus State College of Florida and 18 against FCCAA Atlanta District Champion, Miami-Dade.
“I am extremely proud of our team and how we have fought all year long through adversity,” said Coach Belinda Hendrix. “At the beginning of the season, nobody thought we would compete for the conference title and make a run at the state title.”
“To now have the opportunity to compete in the National Tournament in Utah, it says a great deal about the character and the heart of our team.”
Chipola’s road to victory in the state tournament was paved with victories against South Florida (4-2), St. Petersburg (4-3), State College of Florida (7-4 & 13-8), and Miami-Dade (14-0).
In the Miami-Dade game, Chipola was led by Andrea Sullivan, who had three hits, three runs, five RBIs, two walks, and two homeruns in three at bats. Sullivan was named NJCAA Region VIII Tournament Most Valuable Player and batted .667 for the tournament, 10 for 16.
Joining Sullivan in the hit parade was teammates Kellie Todd, four hits and four RBIs; Michelle Hewett, three hits and two runs; Dana Cauthen, three hits and three runs.
Pitcher Emma Stevenson pitched a complete game shutout by allowing only six runs, one walk, and four strikeouts on 100 pitches.
In her sixth season at the helm of the Lady Indians program, coach Belinda Hendrix had 10 players on the Panhandle All-Conference team, including catcher Kellie Todd, Conference Player of the Year, and Emma Stevenson, Conference Pitcher of the Year.
The Lady Indians won the Panhandle Conference championship this year, and in 2008 and 2007. Chipola finished fifth in the 2009 State Tournament. The team captured the state and national championships in 2007.

Lady Pirates Advance To Regional Final

By Clint Cox

This past Friday night saw the Sneads Lady Pirates softball squad avenged a 10 inning 1-0 loss to South Walton in the District Championship game from a week earlier. After beating Northview 3-2 in the Class 2A Regional Quarter Finals, Sneads got a rematch with the Lady Seahawks for the Regional Semi-Finals. The game, played at South Walton, went the way of Sneads by a score of 3-1. With that win Sneads advanced to the Regional Finals and were scheduled to travel to Lafayette on Tuesday night. That game was rescheduled to Wednesday night due to heavy rains on Monday and Tuesday. The winner of Wednesday night’s game, which were not available at press time, advances to the FHSAA Final Four in Clermont May 12th & 13th. Lafayette advanced to the Regional Finals by beating Franklin County 11-1 and North Florida Christian 6-5.
Sneads and South Walton had played three previous contest this season, with all three being very close games that featured the outstanding pitching of Karissa Childs from Sneads and South Walton’s Shelby Watson. Both teams took their home games during the season in low scoring affairs. The District Championship was another nail biter and Sneads was chomping at the bit to get a rematch with the Lady Seahawks. In that rematch Sneads finally got to Watson, scoring all three runs in the third inning. Childs helped her own cause with a two RBI single to score Jonie Bonine and Kayla Kelly. A throwing error on the play allowed Childs to come all the way around the bases and score, putting Sneads up 3-0. Childs stymied South Walton most of the game, allowing just one run in the fifth inning, and got some fine defensive play from her teammates to seal the win. With the win Sneads improved to 22-7 on the season.
