COTTONDALE – On homecoming night the Cottondale Hornets treated the alumni to a 44-0 win over the visiting Warriors from Aucilla Christian last Friday night. Terry Benbow took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and the route was on. Jacob Herring had a big night for the Hornets as he caught a touchdown, ran for a score and tossed a scoring strike to Benbow. Cody Cosper also scored on a 30 yard TD run.
Head Coach Mike Melvin said the quick start was good for his squad. "We got on them early and they couldn’t answer. The kids played hard and it was a good win for us," commented Melvin. The Hornets improved to 3-4 on the season and were scheduled to have an open week this week. Instead they have picked up a game against Maclay that will be in Cottondale at 7 pm on Oct. 31st.

Hornets Sting Panthers

COTTONDALE – The Cottondale Hornets football team got just what the doctor ordered last Friday night as they poured it on the Panthers of John Paul II Catholic, winning 66-0. The Hornets scored early and often and led 60-0 at the half. The win was much needed as the Hornets, after winning their season opener against Sneads, had dropped four straight games. With the win Cottondale improved to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in district play. They will be off this Friday as they prepare for a home district contest next Friday against Aucilla Christian.

Hornets & Pirates Fall

The Cottondale Hornets traveled to Tallahassee to take on the Rattlers of FAMU and were handed a 46-0 loss. The Rattlers have played in the last two State Championship games for a reason. They don’t rebuild they reload and this year’s squad seems to once again be loaded. FAMU went to the airways and jumped out to an early lead. They expanded that lead to 33-0 at the half and then added 13 more points in the second half. Cottondale fell to 1-3 on the season and 0-1 in district play. The Hornets travel to South Walton on Friday to take on the Seahawks in a non-district matchup.
The Sneads Pirates played host to their arch rival, West Gadsden, and saw the Panthers head back across the river with a 24-0 win. The Pirate offense was stymied by the Panther defense, picking up only one first down and coughing up the ball once in the first half. That helped West Gadsden hold a 10-0 lead at the break. A second Pirate turnover in the third quarter led to another West Gadsden score midway through the quarter. The Panthers added another score in the fourth quarter to make the final 24-0. Defensively Terrence Pittman and John Locke each picked off a pass for the Pirates. Michael Kinard had 12 tackles, including 3 sacks. Andrew Sheard knotched 11 tackles while Josh Rogers and Jamar White followed with 10 tackles each. With the loss Sneads fell to 1-2 on the season and 1-1 in district play. They will next travel to Jay on Friday night to take on the Royals in another district contest.

Hornets Win Wild One

Rivalries are suppose to be crazy affairs and this past Friday night’s version of the annual kickoff rivalry between Cottondale and Sneads was all that and more. The Hornets pulled out a thrilling 32-24 victory over the visiting Pirates.
The game started out with the Pirate’s Michael Kinard recording an early safety on the Hornets. Taylor Edge then ran for a touchdown and the Pirates took an 8-0 lead. Late in the first half the Hornets countered as Nick Jackson hauled in a 26 yard pass reception from Jesse Freeman for a score. Dominique Webb ran in the two point conversion play and the Hornets had tied the game at 8-8. But the Pirates quickly reclaimed the momentum in the final minute of the half as Mark Lawson bolted 58 yards on the ensuing kickoff for a score. Sneads held a 14-8 lead at the half.
Cottondale came out and took the opening possession of the second half right down the field. Noreese Williams scored on a 1 yard run and then Freeman hit Jacob Herring on a two point pass play to give the Hornets a 16-14 lead. The Pirates reclaimed the lead in a most unusual way. They got back to back safeties as the Pirate’s Billy Knight tackled Herring in the endzone to tie the game up. On the Hornet’s next possession a snap on a punt attempt went over the head of Herring and through the end zone. That gave Sneads a 18-16 lead as the game had now moved into the fourth quarter. Cottondale recovered and Jackson ripped off a 69 yard run for a score. Williams added the two point run to tie the game at 24-18. Sneads fired right back as Jeff Davis scored on a 42 yard run to tie the game at 24-24 with less than two minutes to play. But the Hornets would not die and they marched down the field and with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game, Freeman hit Jackson on a 21 yard scoring strike. Webb added the two point run to make the final score 32-24 in the Hornets favor.
Freeman was 14-30 for 181 yards and two TDs on the night while Jackson caught two TD passes and ran for another. Sneads was led by Davis with 170 yards rushing and Lawson with 152 yards rushing. Edge also had a fine night punting as had 5 punts for 164 yards and continually kept the Hornets backed up deep in their own territory.
Cottondale will host Liberty County on Friday night while Sneads will have this week off and play host to Franklin County next Friday night in their district opener.

Cottondale and Sneads To Battle for District Title

In the night capper the Lady Hornets took on the Lady Bucks of Bozeman and came away with a 6-1 win. The game was scoreless through 2 ½ innings but Cottondale finally stung the Lady Bucks in the bottom of the third inning. Shanae Dickens led off with a bunt to reach first and then stole second base. Deb Davis also reached base on a bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error. Dickens and Davis scored on the next play as Michelle Bassin hit a grounder back to the pitcher that she misplayed. Bassin scored on a RBI double from Liz Krauser to give Cottondale a 3-0 lead. They added two more runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth to make the final score 6-1 in their favor.
Sneads and Cottondale will play for the District Championship in Altha on Thursday evening. While both squads will advance to the FHSAA Regional Quarter Finals the following Tuesday, the winner will host that game while the loser will have to travel. The Lady Hornets won the two regular season matchups with the Lady Pirates.

The Cottondale Lady Hornets and Sneads Lady Pirates traveled to Altha on Tuesday night for the opening round of their district tournament. In the opening game the Lady Pirates took on Blountstown and posted a 4-1 win over the Lady Tigers. Sneads jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Kayla Kelly reached on a single. Kali Pringle followed with a single and Samantha Culpepper got the Lady Pirates on the scoreboard with a RBI single to score Kelly. Kayla Rabon then stroked a 2 RBI triple to bring home Pringle and Culpepper. Blountstown managed a run in the third inning but the game entered the seventh inning with Sneads leading 3-1. Kelly and Pringle both singled to get two Lady Pirates on the base pads. Culpepper hit into a fielder’s choice but Kelly was able to score and give the Lady Pirates their winning margin of 4-1. Karissa Childs held the Lady Tigers in check as the winning pitcher struck out 14 Blountstown batters.

Cottondale Takes Two From Malone

COTTONDALE – The Cottondale Lady Hornets avenged one of their only two losses this season on Tuesday night while the Hornets squad won their sixth game in a row. In the girls game the Lady Hornets jumped out ahead of Malone early and never looked back. The Lady Tigers, playing without two of their five starters, fell behind by 10 points at the end of the 1st quarter. By halftime Cottondale’s lead had swelled to 35-13. Kidada Paul’s 3 pointer to end the 3rd quarter made it a 54-24 lead for the Lady Hornets. The final tally was 65-32 in Cottondale’s favor. The Lady Hornets improved to 23-2 on the season and were led by Shaunte Forward with 17 points. Sherisa Forward followed with 16 and Brianna Gray added 13. Malone was led by LeTeisha Sims with 17 points.
In the boy’s game the 1st quarter was tightly contested as the Hornets led by 1 going into the 2nd quarter. Cottondale upped their lead by halftime to 22-17. But Malone rallied in the 3rd quarter by outscoring the Hornets 14-9 to tie the game at 31-31. Cottondale found their stride again in the 4th quarter to outscore Malone 19-13 and post a 50-44 win.
