Hornets Fall In Close Contest

By Clint Cox

The Cottondale Hornets battled hard but came up short in a 13-8 loss on the road to the Maclay Mauraders. The Hornets had an opportunity in the closing minutes of the game to pull off the come from behind victory. But a fumble at the Maurader 4 yard line killed the drive and the Hornets come back hopes.

After a scoreless first quarter the host team took the lead on a 67 yard scoring run. The extra point kick was good and Maclay’s 7-0 lead held up until halftime. Maclay added to that lead in the third quarter with a 30 yard scoring pass to take a 13-0 lead. Cottondale responded with a drive that culminated with a Dominique Webb 3 yard scoring run. Drew Bellamy added the two point conversion run to narrow the margin to 13-8. That scored held for the remainder of the game as the Hornets fought to rally for the win but just could not cash in late in the game.

Webb led the Hornets on the ground with 176 yards and Cottondale won the stats battle in several key areas. They picked up 16 first downs compared to the Mauraders 9 and outrushed the Maclay squad 242 yards to 146 yards. But Maclay passed for 90 yards and came up with just enough plays to get the win. Cottondale falls to 0-3 on the season and will play host to FAMU this Friday night in their first district game of the season.

Tornados Down ‘Dogs

By Clint Cox

The Bay High Tornados ended a 12 game losing streak at the expense of the Marianna Bulldogs this past Friday night with a 33-15 win. That losing streak extended back to the 2007 season but the Tornados are a much improved team this season. They entered the contest 0-2 but had lost two close games to two solid programs in Port St. Joe and Mosley.

The visitors from Panama City scored early in the ball game to take a 7-0 lead. The Bulldog offense had a tough time getting untracked in the first half but midway through the second quarter it was still a 7-0 game. But with 4 ½ minutes left in the half a Bulldog fumble was scooped up by a Tornado and returned 12 yards for a score. Leading 14-0 the Tornados added a 24 yard field with :23 seconds left in the half to take a 17-0. The Bulldogs showed some fight in the second half when they forced a Tornados punt to open the second half. Marianna picked up a first down on their possession and then got a 52 yard scoring run from R.J. Bowers. Tre Jackson ran in the two point conversion to make it a 17-8 game.

But Bay High responded with a long drive that was capped off by a touchdown pass to push their lead to 23-8. Again the Bulldogs showed some fight as they put together their own long drive, 80 yards on 9 plays, that ended with a 3 yard run by Jackson as the third quarter came to a close. Ryan Rudd added the point after kick to narrow the margin to 23-15. The fourth quarter though belong to Bay as they took advantage of two Bulldog turnovers to post a touchdown and field goal.

Bowers led the Bulldogs with 124 yards on 11 carries. The loss was Marianna’s first of the season and the Bulldogs will enter this Friday’s district matchup at home against Walton with a 2-1 record.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTION

Indians Win Thriller In Graceville By Clint Cox
In Graceville the Tigers played host to Grand Ridge and Wayne Driggers scored the game winning touchdown with four seconds to play to give the Indians a 24-18 win. Grand Ridge struck first with a 9 yard scoring run by Curt Willis with 5:25 left in the first quarter. The two point conversion attempt failed but the Indians held a 6-0 lead. Early in the second quarter Driggers scored on a 24 yard run. Again the two point conversion attempt, this time through the air, failed but the Indians lead increased to 12-0. Graceville finally began to get untracked offensively and got nice runs from Denilson Elligson, Jared Padgett and Lamar Sorey. With 3:47 remaining in the first half Daimeyon O’Neal scored on a 34 yard jaunt. The two point conversion attempt failed however the Tigers narrowed the Indian lead to 12-6.
Elligson had a long run into Indians territory to open up the second half. Elligson then took it into the end zone several plays later on a 7 yard run. The two point conversion attempt failed but with three minutes to play in the third quarter the Tigers tied the game at 12-12. Grand Ridge mounted a counter attack with a nice drive that started at their own 25 yard line. Driggers and Darius Williams led the attack as the Indians drove into Tiger territory. Willis picked up a first down to the Tiger 11 yard line as the third quarter came to a close. On the first play of the fourth quarter Williams went in from 15 yards out to break the tie game. Grand Ridge failed on the two point attempt, giving the Indians an 18-12 lead. Graceville fired right back with a long drive that moved into Indian territory. O’Neal and Elligson were the workhorses as the Tigers drove down inside the Indians 25 yard line with six minutes to play. Elligson then ripped off a 20 yard run to set up first and goal. A three yard run by Elligson tied the game at 18-18 with 4 ½ minutes to play.
Williams returned the kickoff 30 yards to give Grand Ridge good field position for the ensuing drive. Saffold ripped off a 10 yard run for a first down and then Williams bolted 23 yards for another first down. But with 1 ½ minutes to play a Grand Ridge fumble was recovered by Graceville at the Tiger 25 yard line. Graceville was unable to sustain a drive and Grand Ridge got the ball back at the Tiger 40 yard line with 19 seconds to play. The Indians ran a halfback pass with Williams connecting with Jon-Michael Glover #12 to the Tiger 10 yard line. Driggers then rolled to his right and scampered into the end zone for the game winning touchdown.
Grand Ridge (1-0) was led on the ground by Williams with 66 yards, Driggers with 127 yards and Willis with 77 yards. Graceville (0-1) was led in rushing by Elligson with 111 yards and O’Neal with 67 yards.
On Tuesday night Grand Ridge traveled to Bristol to take on Tolar Middle School and posted a 14-6 win. After a scoreless first half the Indians got a 81 yard touchdown run from Williams and a two point run from Driggers. Williams then tossed a 34 yard scoring strike to Driggers for the other Indians score. With these wins Grand Ridge is now 2-0 on the season and will next be in action on Tuesday when they travel to Chipley to square off against Roulhac Middle School.
