County Claims Five Regional Track Championships

By Clint Cox

The recent FHSAA Region One Track Meet in Jacksonville saw Jackson County track athletes capture five Regional Championships. All total 24 athletes from the county finished in the top four in their events and will now advance to the FHSAA Track & Field Championships in Winter Park on State Track this Friday and Saturday. For a complete listing of the 24 athletes advancing to the State Championships please see page three of sports. On the girl’s side of the street Graceville’s Jessica McClendon took first place in the shot put with a throw of 36-09.25. On the boy’s side Michael Cassidy of Sneads took first place in both the Shot Put and Discus Throw. He had a throw of 49.10.50 in the Shot Put and 149.00 in the discus throw. Graceville’s Kevin Potts continued to dominate the 400 meter dash, placing first with a run of 50.20. Potts is unbeaten in Class 1A this year in the 400 meter dash. The Graceville Tigers 4x100 meter relay team beat out the Sneads Pirates relay team to take first place with a run of 42.98. Graceville’s team consisted of Potts, Chris Works, Jamal Miller and Mykel Dates.

Lady Pirates Still Alive; Lady Bulldogs Eliminated

By Clint Cox

Two of the county’s varsity softball squads advanced to the first round of the FHSAA softball playoffs. While both Marianna and Sneads had hoped for a district championship, both made it to the playoffs as the district runner up. The Sneads Lady Pirates made it to the Class 2A District Two championship game and as expected had to face South Walton. The two squads had very close contests during the season with each team winning in a pitcher’s dual in their respective home games. In the district title game it was another pitcher’s dual, for nine innings the game was scoreless as Sneads pitcher Karissa Childs battled South Walton’s Shelby Watson. But South Walton got a walk off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to capture the district title and Sneads to travel in the first round of the playoffs as the runner up. Not only did Sneads have to travel, they had to go all the way to Bratt on Tuesday to take on the Lady Chief’s of Northview. The long ride was just a little shorter on the way home as Sneads hung on for a 3-2 win. With that win Sneads gets a rematch with South Walton on Friday night in the Regional Semi-Finals. The Lady Pirates improved to 20-7 on the season and will be at South Walton for round two of the playoffs. Marianna fell to Chipley in the district title bout in a contest that saw the Lady Bulldogs struggle on both offense and defense. With that loss Marianna had to travel to Tallahassee on Tuesday night to square off against the Lady Seminoles of Florida High. That contest turned out to be a pitcher’s dual also with Marianna’s Hali Stout and Florida High’s Taylor Rossman. Both pitchers kept the other team in check but the Lady Seminoles managed a run in the second inning to squeak out a 1-0 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Marianna got runners in scoring position a couple of times but could never cash in. With the loss Marianna’s season comes to a close with a final record of 24-5. Florida High improved to 24-3 and will now host Madison County in the Regional Semi-Finals on Friday.

County Baseball Squads Ousted From Districts

By Clint Cox

All five Jackson County varsity baseball squads began their respective district tournaments this week. And the news is not good as all five teams saw their seasons come to an early end. In Class 1A the Malone Tigers took part in the District Two tournament at John Paul Catholic II in Tallahassee. Malone picked up a first round win with a five inning 15-5 romp over FAMU on Monday night. Will Dunaway picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers, going all five innings. Blake Henson led the way offensively going 2-2 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Hunter Dillard also had a solid night at the plate as he went 2-3 with a triple and two runs scored. With the win Malone improved to 14-9 on the season and advanced to round two of the tournament. On Tuesday night the Tigers took on Munroe in the semi-finals and fell to the Bobcats in a cat fight. In Class 2A District Two action in Bonifay all three county teams found the post season going rough and saw their seasons come to a close. The Graceville Tigers squared off against Bozeman and fell 14-7. Sneads, which had picked up steam as the season progress, battled hard but fell 8-7 to the Seahawks of South Walton. And the Cottondale Hornets took it on the chin in a 10-1 loss to Holmes County. The Marianna Bulldogs took part in the District One Tournament for Class 3A. The tournament is being held in Pensacola at Pensacola Catholic but in an odd twist Marianna’s first round game was at home on Monday against Walton. The Bulldogs pulled out a 5-4 win over the Braves to advance to the district semi-finals on Tuesday night. That contest, played in Pensacola on Tuesday night, was against Bay High and the Tornados ripped through the Bulldogs with a 19-2 win. Bay moves on to take on Catholic on Thursday night for the championship.

Gators - Gators - Gators Gators Gather

The Chipola Area Gator Club will hold its annual gathering on Tuesday, May 4 at the Jackson County Agriculture Center on Highway 90. The guest speaker will be Justin Fry, an assistant coach, who will be working with the offensive line and tight ends. Coach Fry played football at the University of Indiana, and holds the record for most consecutive starts at 45. He played as an offensive lineman from 2002—2006. He came to the Gators in 2009 and did a great job last year as our speaker and we are glad to have him back. We welcome Coach Fry and are excited to hear about the recently completed Spring Game, attended by some 52,000 Gator fans. It will be a little different this year as there is no Tim Tebow on offense and no Brandon Spikes on defense, but we have an outstanding quarterback in John Brantley and a very solid group on the defense. Coach Fry will bring a DVD showing highlights of the Orange and Blue game. He is looking to bring a lot of Gator goodies with him. The Social time begins at 6:30 p.m., which will include refreshments and boiled peanuts. Everyone just gets to know each other better and mingle with Coach Fry and his wife Lauren. Dinner will be enjoyed at 7 p.m., consisting of Jackson County smoked steaks, baked potato, tossed salad, tea, and cake. The cost is $15 per person. Hot dogs for the children are free as always. One change this year is if you do not pay your annual family dues of $25, two years in a row, your name will be removed from the membership list and you will not get an invitation. Election of officers will be held for the coming year. We look for a large crowd of over 100. Last year’s crowd was 145. For reservations call: Charlie Brown at 482-8930 or Phillip Clikas at 482-7209 by Sunday May 2.
Come on out

Lady Indians Begin State Tournament Play

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Lady Indians will start play in the FCCAA State Softball Tournament in Auburndale on Friday April 30th. They will open up the tournament with a 1 pm matchup against South Florida. The Lady Indians captured the 2010 Panhandle Conference Championship in fine fashion, posting a 14-2 conference record and an overall record of 42-11. Chipola enters the tournament ranked #3 in both the state and national community college polls. Looming ahead is a possible matchup with the Lady Sharks of Miami Dade who are currently ranked #1 in the state and nation or Santa Fe, which is ranked #2 in the state and #7 in the nation. The FCCAA State Softball tournament is divided into two divisions, the Atlantic and Gulf Divisions. Chipola will play in the Gulf Division while Miami Dade and Santa Fe will battle each other in the Atlantic Division. The winner of each division will then square off on Sunday for the State Championship. In addition, both division winners earn a berth in the NJCAA National Softball Tournament. All of the Lady Indians softball action can be heard live on the radio at 100.9FM WJAQ. The entire softball tournament will be broadcast live as well on the internet at psblive.com.

Second Place Indians Have Player of the Week

Chipola baseball player Eric Sauls is this week’s FCCAA Baseball Player of the Week for April 20.
The sophomore outfielder from Tallahassee batted .348 (8-for-23) with three home runs and nine RBIs in five games for the Indians. Sauls hit safely in his final four games of the week. He scored at least one run in all five games and enjoyed a three-game stretch in which he drove in eight runs. In a three-game series against top-ranked Gulf Coast, he went 7-for-15 with two homers and six RBIs, including 4-for-7 in game one when he drove in the game-winning run in Chipola’s 14-13, ten-inning victory. Gulf Coast (15-4) has clinched the Panhandle Conference title. Chipola (11-10) has a good hold on second place in the league ahead of Pensacola (8-11), Northwest (8-11) and TCC (8-14). Gulf Coast is the top-ranked team in the state poll. Chipola is next highest Panhandle team at seventh place. PJC is tenth. Chipola outlasted Gulf Coast 10-9 on April 16 behind the pitching of CJ Riefenhauser. Aaron Etchison was 2 for 5, with 4 RBI. The Indians lost a 4-3 decision to Gulf Coast on April 17.

Indians Earn State Tournament Berth

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Indians baseball squad has made reservations for Lakeland and the FCCAA State Baseball Tournament. Those reservations could be made after this past Saturday’s 12-3 win over Northwest Florida State College in Niceville. The win clinched the Panhandle Conference runner up spot for Chipola and earned them a berth in the State Tournament. The Indians will open up tournament play on May 6th at 9 am when they take on Palm Beach State. The tournament will take place at Tigertown Stadium, the spring training home of the Detroit Tigers, in Lakeland and run from May 6-10.

Chipola began their final three game Panhandle Conference series on Saturday in Niceville against Northwest Florida State College. Their mission was simple, win one of the last three games and they would clinch the runner up spot. The Indians jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Eric Sauls went deep for a home run. The Raiders countered with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull within one run. But the Indians posted a run in the third and fourth inning to lead 5-2 and that is where the scored stayed for four innings. In the top of the ninth Chipola exploded for 7 runs to put the game away and punch their ticket for Lakeland. Austin Wright was the winning pitcher as he went eight innings giving up two runs on one hit and striking out eleven batters. Sauls was 1-3 with four RBI, Joey Rapp who was 1-3 with two RBI, Andy Fermin who went 3-3 and Josh Allen who was 2-5 with two RBI.

The Raiders bounced back on Monday with a 6-4 win over the Indians. Northwest Florida took a 5-0 lead after two innings and saw the Indians chip away at the lead but never able to take the lead. Michael Revell was 2-4 with one RBI and Sauls and Fermin each recorded home runs.

Chipola, whose record stands at 12-11 in the conference and 25-23 overall, was slated to play Northwest Florida on Wednesday in Niceville for the final conference game of the season. Results of that contest were not available at press time.

Chipola Softball Players Named All-Conference

Ten members of the conference champion Chipola College softball team were named to the Panhandle All-Conference team.

With a current league record of 14-2, the Lady Indians have already secured a spot in the FCCAA State Tournament.

Six Lady Indians—Emma Stevenson, Brittany Black, Trish Bliss, Michelle Hewett, Nikki Roddy and Kellie Todd—were named First Team All Conference. Three Chipola players—Hannah Lovestrand, Andrea Sullivan and Ariell van Hook—were named Second Team All Conference. Lady Indian Dana Cauthen received honorable mention.

Catcher Kellie Todd was named Conference Player of the Year. Emma Stevenson was selected as the Conference Pitcher of the Year, with a record of 20-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play with two saves and an ERA of 0.96.

FWC hosts Florida Boating Advisory Council meeting

The Florida Boating Advisory Council held its semi-annual meeting in Tallahassee April 9. The 18-member council is made up of representatives from various boating interests and advises the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and Department of Community Affairs on boating-related issues.
At the meeting, which was open to the public, the council covered a variety of topics that affect boating in Florida. There was discussion on vessel carrying capacities on Florida waterways, commercial passenger-for-hire requirements, improvements for public access for recreational boating, vessel insurance and derelict vessels. FWC Col. Jim Brown, the new chairman, requested further discussion on the issues.
The council considers issues affecting the boating community. Most members are appointed by the governor. The Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate each have a representative, as do the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, Inland Navigation Districts, Department of Environmental Protection and the FWC.
New members of the council include Sen. Dennis Jones, Col. Jim Brown, Joann Mogle, Jon Netts, Rep. Jimmy Patronis and April Price.

FWC seeks to connect kids with nature at Capitol event April 27

The courtyard between the old and new Florida capitols will be a showcase of the natural wonders of Florida from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 27. The theme is “Creating the next generation that cares.”
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will host a variety of interactive displays to inspire youngsters to care about the natural character of Florida and enjoy the adventures that nature offers them.
One display will feature a touch tank of marine life; another will offer kids a chance to become a bear for a little while and search for berries and bugs to eat. Participants will also have a chance to learn how to cast a fishing line.
Kids will learn the names of the bird species that live in Florida or migrate through the state every year and participate in an activity that will help them discover what it’s like to be a bird at migration time.
Youngsters will get to see a wild baby alligator up close with an expert standing by to answer their questions, such as, “Can an alligator really outrun a racehorse like my brother says?”
The FWC’s Division of Law Enforcement will display the vehicles and vessels it takes to patrol, protect and preserve Florida’s woods and waters, and the division’s K-9 team will demonstrate how it sniffs out lawbreakers and tracks down lost adventurers.
Other activities will include a station to make bird masks, a turkey-calling presentation and more.
Increasingly, today’s children disconnect from nature. They devote nearly eight hours a day to entertainment media and media multi-tasking, while the number of youngsters who spend time in traditional outdoor activities continues to decline dramatically.
Organizers hope that through providing information and interactive experiences to youths, the project will motivate them to care about protecting the legacy of magnificent natural resources that are unique to Florida and that fuel the state’s economy.
The event is free and open to everybody who’s interested in learning some of nature’s secrets and how they sustain life in Florida.

Lady Bulldogs Avenge Earlier Loss To Sneads

By Clint Cox

The two softball squads in the county with the best records hooked up last Friday night for a rematch as Marianna traveled to Sneads. The Lady Pirates had nipped the Lady Bulldogs in Marianna a couple of weeks ago with an extra innings (11) win. The rematch was on the Lady Pirates home turf and the first five innings of the game almost mirrored the earlier matchup in that it was another low scoring contest.

Hali Stout was once again in the circle for Marianna while Sneads countered with Aleisha Edenfield. Sneads pitcher Karissa Childs, who had battled Stout two weeks ago, was out due to being sick. The game was scoreless through the first two innings, although each squad had chances to score. Both teams loaded the bases in the second inning, only to see the other team’s pitching and defense prevent any runs crossing the plate. Marianna scratched a run in the third inning when Alison Hutton stroked a triple to lead off and then scored on a ground out by Jennifer Cramer. It looked like that 1-0 score was going to hold as both the third and fourth innings were also scoreless. Again each time had chances to score but neither could cash in.

The top of the fifth inning was when the Lady Bulldogs made their move. Lindsey Basford and Maya Boykin led off the inning with a singles. Brandi Middleton followed with a bunt to load the bases and set up Hutton for a big play. Hutton came through with a clutch 3 RBI triple to score Basford, Boykin and Middleton and give Marianna a 4-0 lead. A ground ball by Cramer was mishandled and that allowed Hutton to come home to score. The final run came after a hit by Cayce Griffin set up a RBI single from Mallory Dean to score Cramer and make it a 6-0 Lady Bulldog lead.

Any ideas of a Sneads rally were snuffed out by Stout who struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth inning. Marianna had another opportunity in their last at bat when they loaded the bases again. But Sneads came up with the defensive plays with a force out and strike to prevent any more damage. The last at bat for the Lady Pirates saw Ashlen Wilson double and then home to score on a ground ball hit by Cambridge Chason. But that was all the Lady Pirates could muster allowing Marianna to seal the win.

Marianna improved to 21-3 on the season while Sneads fell to 17-6. Griffin and Boykin each had three hits to lead Marianna while Wilson led Sneads with two hits.

Pirates Pick Up Another Win; Bulldogs Drop District Game

By Clint Cox

The Sneads Pirates picked up their fourth win in a row with a thrilling 9-8 district win over the Graceville Tigers last Friday night in Graceville. Jerry Bamburg was the hero of the game as he knocked in the game winning run in the seventh inning and pitched the last four innings to get the win. There was plenty of offense in this matchup as Sneads scored in every inning. But Graceville was coming up with plenty of run production as well and led 8-5 after four innings. But Sneads plated a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game. Bamburg then came up with the big hit to score Aaron Green and give the Pirates a one run lead in the top of the seventh inning. Jon Beauchamp had a big two RBI hit in the sixth to tie the game and Graceville’s Devin Cassidy stroked a two run homer in the first inning.

The Marianna Bulldogs found the going rough in their district outing last Friday night as they fell 3-0 to rival Chipley. The Bulldogs had soundly defeated Chipley in their first matchup three weeks ago in Chipley. But they didn’t have to face Chipley’s ace pitcher that night and got out of Chipley in five innings after the 10 run rule was invoked. This time things were much different as Chipley came to Marianna and sent their ace Karsten Whitson to the mound. Whitson, with his 95 mile an hour heat, fanned 14 Bulldogs in the shut out. Marianna got a solid pitching performance from sophomore Michael Mader who held Chipley scoreless through five innings of work. He gave way to Alex Bigale in the sixth inning and the Tigers managed to plate three runs in the seventh inning to capture the win.

County Softball Squads Begin Districts

By Clint Cox

The five varsity softball programs in the county began their respective district tournaments this week. In Class 1A the Malone Lady Tigers had to travel to Aucillia to take part in their district tournament. They took on the John Paul Catholic Monday night and posted a 22-12 win over the Lady Panthers. The Lady Tigers were led on offense by Cara McCormic who went 4-for-6 with seven RBI and Sara Newsom who went 3-for-3 with five RBI and four runs scored. Malone then had to square off against powerhouse Aucillia Christian on Tuesday night and fell 15-0 to the Lady Warriors. The Lady Tigers finished the season with a 8-12 record and under Head Coach Greg Ford continue to make steady progress. Two seasons ago the team failed to win a game and last year they won five games. The eight wins is the most for the girl’s fast pitch softball program at Malone.

In Class 2A action three county schools are taking part in the District Two tournament in Blountstown which began on Monday. The Sneads Lady Pirates enter the tournament as the #2 seed and took on Holmes County and posted an 11-1 victory. With that win Sneads advances to the semi-final round on Thursday night. The Lady Hornets of Cottondale had the tough task of squaring off against the #1 seed in the Lady Seahawks of South Walton. Cottondale fell to South Walton by a score of 11-0 to conclude their season. On Tuesday night the Graceville Lady Tigers were scheduled to play Bozeman however rain forced that contest to be rescheduled to Wednesday. Results of the Wednesday contest were not available at press time.

The Class 3A District One tournament features the Marianna Lady Bulldogs as the #1 seed entering the tournament. Action had been scheduled to begin on Monday night however rain has postponed both Monday and Tuesday night’s games. The Lady Bulldogs drew a bye and will play on Thursday night against the winner of Wednesday night’s matchup between Pensacola Catholic and Bay.

Indians Face Final Conference Series Against Raiders

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Indians baseball squad took two out of three games last week in their series against Panhandle Conference Champion Gulf Coast. That allowed the Indians to maintain sole possession of second place while they have a six day break from conference play this week. They return to the field this Saturday in Niceville to take on Northwest Florida State College in their final conference series of the 2010 season. Chipola currently controls their own destiny in regards to making the state tournament. If they win all three upcoming games against the Raiders they will head to Lakeland in two weeks. The Raiders and Pirates of Pensacola are doing battle this week and the outcome of that series will have an impact on what Chipola needs to do should they not sweep the upcoming series with the Raiders. Pensacola is also trying to stay in the hunt but they will close out the season with a three game series with Gulf Coast.

The series with conference front runner Gulf Coast was a wild one, with every game going right down to the final at bats. It began with perhaps the wildest of them all on last Wednesday when Chipola won 14-13. The Indians trailed big early on as Gulf Coast led 7-1 after 2 ½ innings of play. But Chipola narrowed the gap with four runs in the third inning. But Gulf Coast came back with more runs and led 13-5 after six innings. Chipola rallied with five runs in the seventh, then tied the game at 13-13 in the bottom of the ninth and won it in the tenth inning. Marianna’s Tyler Wilson came off the bench with a big pinch hit late in the game to score two runs. Eric Sauls was 4-7 with three RBI and Michael Revell was 2-5 with three RBI and a home run. Duncan Midkiff got the win on the mound for the Indians.

Down in Panama City on Friday it was Chipola getting out to the early lead and then hanging on for a 10-9 win. Chipola led 6-2 early and held a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Gulf Coast got a grand slam home run to pull within one run but the Indians got a break on a grounder up the middle to force the final out of the game. Aaron Etchison was 2-5 with four RBI and a home run. Sauls, Andy Fermin and Cody Martin also homered for the Indians.

The final game of the series was on Saturday in Marianna and even though the Indians got a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth from Sauls, the Commodores avoided the clean sweep with a 4-3 win. Chipola held a 2-1 lead early but the Commodores plated runs in three straight innings to take a 4-2 lead. Blake Newalu was 2-5 on the day with two RBIs to lead Chipola.

Chipola is currently 11-10 in conference play and 24-21overall. Saturday’s game in Niceville will be at 1 pm and will be followed by a home game on Monday at 5 pm and another road game in Niceville on Wednesday at 5 pm.

Robotics Contest

Once again the screams of the crowd bounced off the walls of the old Marianna High School gym April 8 as students cheered on their teams towards victory; however, this time the contest involved robots and innovation instead of basketballs or volleyballs.

Students from 23 different teams designed and built robots to compete in the 2010 Chipola Regional Workforce Board Robotics Contest. Teams were challenged to build a robot that could pick up tennis balls and pipe as well as cross a barrier that divided the contest arena. Teams also competed in a log book contest that required them to document their entire design and build effort. The top long book teams then had to face a panel of judges to answer questions about their efforts.

In the contest arena teams were challenged to place tennis balls into tubes as well as place various sizes of pipe onto pegs. The teams also had to build a robot that could cross a barrier in order to maximize their score. All teams competed in a round robin contest with the top twelve teams advancing to a single elimination tournament.

In the end second seed Gizmo from Bethlehem High School outscored top seed Liberty 1 from Liberty County High School to take first place. Altha’s Johnny Boy robot defeated Chargers from Chipley High School to take third place.

In the Log Book contest Altha’s Johnny Boy team used a strong interview to take first place. Altha’s FFA team took third with Bethlehem’s Skill Master and Gizmo and taking second and fourth respectively.

Vernon 1 had the highest score in any single match and Cottondale High School was awarded the Sportsmanship award.

Richard Williams, Executive Director of the workforce board, complimented both the students and the teachers involved in the event.

“When you look at the robot designs, the work the teams are doing in the pit area to make repairs and improvements you realize the students are really learning a lot without even realizing it at the time,” Williams said. “It is also fun to watch the students and teachers really getting into the competition and realizing that sometimes the students are just having fun learning and the teachers are the ones that are really nervous.”

The contest was sponsored by PBS&J, David H. Melvin Consulting Engineers and Opportunity Florida.

Come on out Gator Fans!

Apply for alligator hunting permits on May 5

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will begin

accepting applications May 5 for a chance to obtain highly coveted

permits to participate in the statewide alligator harvest.

In Phase I,

applications http://www.myfwc.com/docs/LicensesPermits/Alligator_hunt_wo

rksheet.pdf will be accepted for a random drawing from 10 a.m. (EDT)

May 5 through 11:59 p.m. (EDT) May 18. Approximately 6,000 alligator

harvest permits will be available.

During the Phase I random drawing, each person can submit only one

no-cost application, which provides the option of prioritizing up to

five hunt area and period choices. All those seeking a harvest permit

must be at least 18 years of age by Aug. 15. A permit allows the

harvest of two alligators on a designated area.

People can submit applications at any county tax collector's office,

license agent (retail outlet that sells hunting and fishing licenses),

and at www.fl.wildlifelicense.com. Drawing results will be posted at

MyFWC.com/Hunting http://myfwc.com/recreation/hunt_index.aspx; click on

"Limited Entry Hunts," then "Check Permit Availability and Drawing

Results." Successful applicants must make their trapping license fee

payments at the application locations list above by June 7.

Any permits remaining after June 7 will be offered during Phase II on a

first-come, first-served basis from 10 a.m. (EDT) June 9 through 11:59

p.m. (EDT) June15. Those who purchased a permit during Phase I may not

apply. Applicants in Phase II are limited to one permit.

If permits are available after Phase II, the FWC will offer them during

Phase III on a first-come, first-served basis, while they last,

beginning at 10 a.m. (EDT) June 16. People who purchased a permit in

Phase I or II may apply for additional permits during Phase III.

Successful applicants must submit payment for an alligator trapping

license and two alligator harvest tags, or provide proof of a valid

alligator trapping license (must be valid through Nov. 1) and pay the

fee for two harvest tags. No other hunting licenses are required.

The cost for a resident alligator trapping license and alligator harvest

tags is $271.50, and nonresidents pay $1,021.50. The cost for each

additional alligator hunting permit is $61.50, regardless of residency.

All fees are nonrefundable. Tags and permits are nontransferable.

An alligator trapping agent license is also available for $51.50; it

allows the license holder to assist permitted trappers in taking

alligators.

The alligator hunting season will run 11 consecutive weeks from Aug. 15

through Nov. 1.

To educate participants on the how-to's and rules and regulations of the

hunts, the FWC offers a no-cost, three-hour training and orientation

program, which is held at various locations throughout the state. Permit

recipients are not required to attend, but the FWC strongly encourages

first-time participants to go. Courses will be offered in July and

August, and permit holders will receive, by mail, permit packages

listing dates and locations.

Tigers 10 Run Wildcats

By Clint Cox
The Malone Tigers posted a 12-2 win over the visiting Wildcats of Bethlehem on Monday night to pick up their 10th win of the season. Will Dunaway took to the mound and picked up the win in allowing just two runs on the night.
Malone jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Blake Henson scored but the Wildcats came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. In the third inning the Tigers began to take control of the game as Henson walked, then stole second and third base. The throw to third base ended up in left field allowing Henson to come home for the score. Jeffery Pittman stroked a RBI single to score Travlaeon Shuemaker, who had come in to run for Dunaway who had been hit by a pitch. Pittman stole second and then eventually scored on a wild pitch. Derek Orshall had drawn a walk and later scored on a ground out by Robert Orshall. The last run of the inning came when Hunter Dillard scored on a RBI single from Sean Henry to give Malone a 6-1 lead.
The bottom of the fourth saw Malone increase their lead as Dunaway singled and Derek Orshall reached on an error. Robert Orshall then crushed one to the gap for a two RBI double that scored Shuemaker and Derek Orshall. Nick Breeden then ripped a RBI triple to score Robert Orshall and then Breeden came home on a ground out from Dillard. That put Malone up 10-1 after four innings of play.
The final nails in the coffin came in the sixth inning as Derek Orshall tripled to lead off the inning. Robert Orshall and Breeden were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Shuemaker’s two RBI single scored a pair of Orshalls and the Tigers brought home the 10 run win. Malone improved to 10-8 on the season and were scheduled to take on Munroe Tuesday night on the road. Results of that contest were not available at press time.

Pirates Picking Up Steam

By Clint Cox
After battling rough seas for much of the season, the Sneads Pirates baseball squad seems to have the wind behind their sails recently. The Pirates have reeled off three straight wins, their longest winning streak of the 2010 campaign.
After wins last week against Graceville and Blountstown, the Pirates declawed the Bearcats of Bainbridge on Tuesday night 14-6. Bainbridge, coached by former Marianna High coach Scott Miller, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Pirates fired right back in big fashion during their first at bat. Marcus Beauchamp stroked a RBI single to score Bubba Carpenter. Beauchamp later scored on a past ball to tie the game at 2-2. Pirate pitcher John Locke drew a walk and Austin Bucceri came in as a courtesy runner. The Pirates managed to load the bases and then took the lead when Ron Brown was hit by a pitch to score Bucceri. Aaron Green’s sacrifice fly scored Devin Hayes to make it a 4-2 lead for the Pirates. Taylor Dunham stepped up with a big two RBI singled to score T.J. Granger and Brown. The Pirates had batted around and Carpenter came up with a RBI double to score Dunham for the final run of the inning.
Sneads led 7-2 after one inning and added another run in the second when Bucceri, who again was a courtesy runner for Locke, came home to score on a wild pitch. Bainbridge countered in the third inning with three runs to cut the Pirate lead to 8-5. Sneads used a big bottom of the fourth inning however to pull away. It started with a triple from Locke and Bucceri coming in to run for him. Bucceri scored on a balk to make it a 9-5 lead. Hayes and Granger had reached base and then came home to score on a two out single off the bat of Brown. Garrett Harris came in as a courtesy runner for Brown, the Pirate’s catcher, and scored on a RBI triple by Aaron Green. The Pirates increased their lead to 13-5 when Green came home on a Bearcat wild pitch. Both teams added another run down the stretch for Sneads it was a big win over the much larger school from Georgia. The Pirates will try to make it four in a row when they host Cottondale on Thursday night.

Lady Indians Capture Conference Championship

By Clint Cox
The Chipola Lady Indians swept the Lady Eagles of Tallahassee in a double header on Saturday and in doing so captured the 2010 Panhandle Conference Championship. Clinching the conference championship in the series against Tallahassee was in question as the Lady Eagles held a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game. But Kellie Todd came up big with a walk off two RBI double to knock in the game winning and conference championship clinching runs, giving Chipola a come from behind 4-3 win.
Game one went to Chipola by a score of 3-0 but through three innings of play it was a scoreless contest. Chipola plated a run in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and Brittany Black pitched a shutout to get the win. Black allowed just one hit on the game, gave up no walks and struck out five batters. Michelle Hewett was 3-4 on the game and Black helped her own cause by going 1-3 with a key RBI.
Game two saw Chipola plate a run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Tallahassee came right back in the fourth inning to tie the game but Chipola reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Eagles plated two runs in the top of the seventh and appeared poised to play the role of spoiler. Todd had other ideas however and sent a shot into the left center gap that allowed two Lady Indians to come home and win the game. Todd was 3-4 on the game with three RBI while Hewett was 3-3. Emma Stevenson captured the win for the Lady Indians as she went seven innings and struck out seven batters.
Chipola is now 12-2 in conference play and 40-11 overall. They will close out the conference season with a double header at home on Friday against Northwest Florida State College. As the conference champion, Chipola will advance to the FCCAA State Softball tournament in Auburndale, Florida which starts on April 30th.

Officials at the Cavern’s Golf course in Marianna have issued a Scam Alert against Junior Carlton (shown above). The round netted him a plus 16 in the dogfight and many dollars from his embittered competitors.

Cox Sets New Record For Pole Vault

Special To The Times

Marianna High School Bulldog Track Coach Allan Gibson announced that Patrick Cox has recently set a new school record in the pole vault. The previous record of ten feet was held by Matthew Amos. Back on March 26th during a track meet in Panama City at Arnold High School Cox tied the record of ten feet. The following week at a meet in Thomasville, Ga. the young freshman set the new school record with a vault of ten feet and six inches.

Gibson had coached Cox back in the fall on the Cross Country team and felt he might do well on the spring track team in the long distance running and pole vaulting. “Patrick is a good athlete and hard worker. I really like the fact that he responds to a challenge as well as anybody I coach,” Gibson commented on Cox. But Cox wasn’t the only one from that cross country team that Gibson felt might take to the sport of pole vaulting. Several of them have indeed done well in the sport. Dalton Hendrix is right on the heels of Cox as he cleared nine feet six inches at the meet in Panama City. Jimmy Lein is right on their heels as well. The group also includes a seventh grader, John Melzer, and he is also showing a lot of promise. Of the current Bulldog pole vaulters only Lein had any prior experience coming into the season. Cox and Hendrix both grabbed a pole for the first time in February after coming out when the wrestling season ended. Both picked up the sport quickly and the entire pole vaulting team has excelled according to Gibson. “All of them have worked really hard. They are a good group of kids that get along really well but at the same time push each other to get better,” Gibson said of the group.

The pole vaulters, along with the rest of the Bulldog track team, are busy gearing up for the upcoming district tournament that is scheduled for April 15th at Bay High School.

Lady Indians Split With Gulf Coast

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Lady Indians softball squad split in their last outing against Gulf Coast last Thursday. Although they dropped one to the Lady Commodores, the Lady Indians remain in first place of the Panhandle Conference with a two game lead over second place Northwest Florida State College.

Game one of the double header against Gulf Coast saw the Lady Indians fall behind early as the Lady Commodores led 4-0 after four innings of play. Chipola mustered a rally with a run in each of their at bats in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. But Gulf Coast also plated runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held on for a 6-3 win. Chipola out hit Gulf Coast 10-8 but committed three errors that didn’t help their cause. Nikki Roddy was 2-4 with a RBI and Michelle Hewett was 2-3 with a RBI to lead the offense. Emma Stevenson took the loss for the Indians, just her third loss of the season against 18 wins.

The night capper went the way of Chipola as they posted a 7-5 win. The Lady Indians plated 3 runs in the second inning, 2 more in the third and another in the fourth. Trailing 6-0 the Lady Commodores mounted an attack and pulled to within three runs before Chipola added another run in the sixth inning to seal the win. Brittany Black picked up the win, improving to 12-5 on the season. Ariell Van Hook led the way on offense, going 2-4 with 2 RBI. Andrea Sullivan was 2-3 with a RBI and one run scored.

Chipola is now 8-2 in conference play and 36-11 overall. They were back in action on Wednesday with a double header at home against Pensacola. Results of those contests were not available at press time. On Saturday they will host Tallahassee for a double header starting at 1 pm.

Indians Stand In Second Place

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Indians baseball squad has gone
4-1 in their last five outings to propel themselves into sole possession of second place in the Panhandle Conference. They swept the Raiders of Northwest Florida State College last week and then followed that series with a win over Pensacola this past Saturday. The Pirates bounced back though on Monday to knock off the Indians.

The sweep over the Raiders included a 10-0 win last Monday and a 10-4 win last Wednesday. The Wednesday win saw them get a solid pitching performance from Rodney Quintero who went seven innings and gave up just one earned run. Quintero scattered six hits and struck out seven Raiders. Chipola jumped out to an early lead on a two run homer by Aaron Etchison. The Indians led 4-1 after three innings but the Raiders tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth. Chipola then plated five runs in the fifth inning to pull away and go on for the six run victory. Etchison was 3-4 on the day with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. The series concluded on Friday with a 9-8 win at home. The Indians took an early 2-0 lead and led 5-1 after five innings. The Raiders plated 2 runs in the sixth only to see the Indians counter with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Chipola led 9-4 going into the ninth inning and managed to hold off a furious Raider rally that left Northwest Florida one run short. Garrett Baker got the win for the Indians, going five innings and giving up two runs. Levon Washington led the way on offense as he went 3-5 with a home run, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Pensacola came to town on Saturday and the Indians posted a 7-5 win over the visiting Pirates. Pensacola took the early lead but Chipola rallied to tie the game at 3-3 after four innings. The Indians went up 4-3 in the fifth inning but then fell behind 5-4 in the top of the seventh. Chipola rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning to reclaim a 6-5 lead. Tigers Pull Away For Win Over Hornets

By Clint Cox

The Malone Tigers baseball team went head to head with county rival Cottondale and after a see-saw affair pulled away in the seventh inning for a 10-5 victory. Malone had taken an early lead only to see the Hornets battle back and take a lead as well tie the game twice. But the Tigers exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning and then brought in their closer Jeffery Pittman to shut down the Hornets and seal the deal.

Malone jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Blake Henson reached on a Cottondale error and later scored on a balk. Cottondale took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Drew Bellamy singled and advanced to third base on a double by Aaron O’Bert. Bellamy came home to score on a fielder’s choice and then Caleb Toole stroked a RBI single to score O’Bert. Malone fired right back to reclaim the lead in the top of the third when Pittman singled and he was brought home on a two run home run by Henson. Cottondale fired right back themselves with a run in the bottom of the third as Ryan Morrisey walked and later scored on a wild pitch. That tied the game at 3-3.

Malone broke the tie the next inning as Nick Breeden reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Henry. The Tigers pushed the lead to 5-3 in the fifth inning when Henson scored on a RBI single from Derek Orshall. Cottondale would not go away though and battled back with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth Chris Clemmons scored on a Malone error and then Patrick McSwain sent one deep over the left field fence to tie the game at 5-5.

The top of the fifth proved to be the difference in the game as Malone loaded the bases up on walks and hit batsmen. Will Dunaway crushed a 2 RBI single to score Pittman and Henson. Derek Orshall scored on a ground ball from Robert Orshall that resulted in a Cottondale error. Dunaway scored on fielder’s choice by Breeden and the Robert Orshall came home on a sacrifice fly from Henry. When the damage was all done Malone was up 10-5. Dunaway had relieved Derek Orshall on the mound back in the fourth inning and then he gave way to Pittman in the seventh. Pittman came in and got the Hornets out three up and three down to secure the win.

The Chipola Indians baseball squad got a much needed Panhandle Conference win this past Monday with a 10-0 drumming of Northwest Florida State College in six innings. The Indians got the long ball going as they stroked four home runs on the day with two coming off the bat of Eric Sauls. Andy Fermin and Aaron Etchison also went deep in the win for the Indians.
The game was scoreless through three and a half innings but in the bottom of the fourth the Indians went on the war path. They plated three runs in that inning, followed by four more runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Chipola pounded out 11 hits on the day, led by Fermin who was 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Sauls followed close behind as he was 2-3 with five RBI and two runs scored. Austin Wright picked up the win on the mound, improving to 4-3 on the season. Wright went six innings and allowed three hits, no runs while giving up four walks and striking out seven batters.
With the win Chipola improved to 4-6 in conference play and 17-17 overall. They are currently tied in the conference with Pensacola and Northwest Florida. All three teams are one game behind second place Tallahassee. Gulf Coast leads the conference with a 9-1 record. Chipola was scheduled to travel to Niceville on Wednesday for game two of the series with Northwest Florida. Results of that contest were not available at press time. Game three of the series will be on Friday at 2 pm. Next up after this series is a three game series against Pensacola. Chipola host the Pirates on Saturday and Wednesday while traveling to Pensacola on Monday.

Bulldogs On A Roll

By Clint Cox
The Marianna Bulldogs have been pounding their opponents as of late, racking up 45 runs in their last four outings. The latest victim came on Tuesday night as the Bulldogs beat district rival Chipley 12-2 in five innings. Marianna scored five runs to start the game as Colby Johnson’s RBI single scored Austin Branch. After Marianna loaded the bases Chris Godwin’s grounder to third was mishandled and Clayte Rooks came home to score. Jaren Bannerman then stroked a 3 RBI double to score Johnson, Godwin and Alex Bigale. Chipley countered with two runs in their first at bat but Marianna went right back on the offensive in the second inning. Rooks and Johnson singled and both scored on a single by Zac Smith to make it 7-2. The Bulldogs made it 9-2 in the third inning when Bigale doubled and scored on a throwing error. Bannerman got his fourth RBI of the game with a single to score Godwin. The fourth inning was the final nail in the Chipley coffins as Johnson went deep over the left field fence for a solo home run. Dustin O’Hearn singled to score Smith and Jae Elliott singled to bring home O’Hearn. Left handed sophomore Michael Mader was the winning pitcher and after Chipley plated two runs in the first inning Mader settled down and held the Tigers in check for the remainder of the game.
On Monday night Marianna picked up another road with a 11-9 win over Seminole County (Georgia). The Bulldogs trailed 8-0 but rallied for the big win. The win against Seminoles County followed two wins by the Bulldogs this past weekend. On Friday they picked up a 10-7 district win over the Marlins of Arnold. Bigale was the winning pitcher and Mader picked up a save. Offensively Marianna was led by Bigale, Rooks and Smith who all had RBI doubles. Johnson and Smith followed with RBI singles.
On Saturday the Bulldogs traveled to Sneads and exploded for 10 runs in their final at bat to rally for a 12-3 win over the Pirates. Marianna trailed 3-0 through much of the game but got their bats going in the top of the seventh to thwart the upset by Sneads. Marianna will return to the diamond this coming Tuesday with a home contest at 6:30 pm against district powerhouse Pensacola Catholic.

Lady Indians Pick Up Two More Wins

By Clint Cox
The Chipola Lady Indians softball squad remains in first place of the Panhandle Conference after posting wins over Northwest Florida State College on Tuesday. The two games were a total contrast as the Lady Indians won big in game one by a score of 9-0. Game two went to extra innings with Chipola taking a 4-3 win in nine innings.
In the first contest Chipola jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. They plated a run in their first at bat and three more in the second inning to lead 4-0. The Lady Indians scored in every at bat but one as they pounded out 13 hits and committed no errors. Emma Stevenson took the win as she went the distance and allowed no runs on just two hits. Nikki Roddy led the way offensively going 3-4 with four RBI and a home run. Trish Bliss also added a home run and Michelle Hewett was 3-4 with two runs scored. Kellie Todd was 2-3 with a RBI and Hannah Lovestrand was 2-3 with two RBI.
The night capper was a totally different game as it was a pitcher’s dual for eight innings. Neither team could muster any runs so going into the ninth inning it was tied 0-0. Chipola erupted for four runs in the top of the ninth and then held the Lady Raiders to three runs in the bottom of the ninth to hang on for the win. Brittany Black got the win and Stevenson came on late to get a save. Hewett was 2-5 with two RBI, Andrea Sullivan was 1-4 with a RBI and Dana Cauthen was 1-4 with a RBI. Black and Trish Bliss were also 2-4 on the contest.
With these wins Chipola improved to 7-1 in conference play and 35-10 overall. They were back on the road on Wednesday with a double header in Panama City against Gulf Coast. Results of those contest were not available at press time. They will be hosting Pensacola this coming Wednesday for two games beginning at 4 pm.
