Lady Bulldogs Rally For Win Over Cottondale

By Clint Cox

The last time Marianna and Cottondale meet on the softball field the Lady Bulldogs posted a big win in five innings. While the final score, 19-8, from Monday night’s contest in Cottondale looked like another lopsided win, the Lady Hornets had Marianna on the ropes but could not hang on as the Lady Bulldogs plated 15 runs in their last two at bats.

Jennifer Hewett gave Cottondale an early 3-2 lead with a home run that also scored Valarie D’Ambrosio and Chelsea Caudill. In the third inning Cottondale got a lead off single by Haley Boggs. Mary Auger doubled to score Boggs and then Aulettia Russ stroked a RBI single to score Auger. Russ later scored as Cottondale took a 6-2 lead after three innings. Marianna chipped away at the lead in the fourth inning as Hali Stout reached on an error and Cayce Griffin walked. Stout scored on a fielder’s choice and Griffin scored on a past ball to make it a 6-3 game. Cottondale responded in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs as Hewett’s RBI triple scored a run and then Hewett came home on a throwing error.

Going into the top of the fifth inning Marianna trailed 8-4 and needed some kind of spark if they were going to rally. That spark came on a lead off solo home run by Mallory Dean over the left field fence. Dean has been on a tear as of late with a walk off home run against Pensacola Catholic last Friday night that gave Marianna a 4-3 district win. After Stout singled and later scored to make it a 8-6 game Marianna managed to load the bases. Cottondale changed pitchers but a walk scored a Lady Bulldog to pull Marianna to within one run. The big blow of the game for Marianna came on a 3 RBI double by Jennifer Cramer to put the Lady Bulldogs up 10-8.

Offensively Cottondale had some chances but could not cash in during the fifth inning. Marianna blew the game open in the sixth inning with a 3 RBI triple by Haden Searcy. Allison Hutton stroked a RBI single to score Searcy and after Marianna loaded the bases again Mia Boykin’s 3 RBI double sealed the win.

With the win Marianna improved to 14-2 on the season and will host district opponent Arnold on Thursday night at 6:30 pm. The Lady Bulldogs will enter that contest 9-1 in district play. Cottondale was scheduled to take on Graceville Tuesday night but results of that game were not available at press time.

Bullpups Conference Champs; Indians Runner Ups

By Clint Cox

Jackson County claimed the top two spots in the Panhandle Middle School Baseball Conference Tournament held Monday and Tuesday at the MERE Complex. Marianna Middle School brought home the Conference Championship with a 13-4 win over Grand Ridge Middle School in the title game on Tuesday night. With the win Marianna finished the 2010 season unbeaten.

The championship game saw Marianna jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. The inning was capped off when Jonathan Sikes scored on a past ball for the fourth run. Grand Ridge plated a run in the second inning when John Michael Glover reached on an error and later scored on a wild pitch. The Bullpups added five more runs to their lead in the bottom of the third as Sikes singled to score Reed Long. Sikes later scored on a wild pitch and Dequaris Baker scored on a RBI single from Kyle Tanner. The final run of the inning came when Tanner scored after forcing a throw down to third base. That gave the Bullpups a 9-1 lead after three innings of play.

Grand Ridge fired back in the top of the fourth with 3 runs as Trent Childs and Dustin Sneads were hit by Bullpup pitcher Reed Long. Sikes came into relieve Long and gave up a hit to Hunter Johnson to load the bases. Trent Moates singled to score Childs and then Sneads scored on a fielder’s choice. Johnson came home to score on a wild pitch and the Bullpups lead had been reduced to 9-4. The bottom of the fifth proved to be another big inning for Marianna as they plated another four runs. Walker Roberts singled and scored on a Grand Ridge error on a Nick Helms grounder. Tyler Colson stroked a two RBI double to score Helms and Trent Nobles. Colson came home moments later on a fielder’s choice to seal the final score at 13-4.

Grand Ridge advanced to the title game with an 13-9 win over Vernon on Monday night. The Indians jumped out to an early 9-4 lead after three innings of play and then added runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Moates was on the mound for Grand Ridge and keep Vernon in check most of the game as he picked up the win.

Marianna’s Monday night matchup was against Freeport and the Bullpups won 11-1. Tyler Colson picked up the win on the mound as Marianna scored early and scored often. Graceville also participated in the tournament and but fell to Freeport in game two on Monday.

Commodores Swept Indians

The Chipola Indians baseball squad is finding the going rough right now in Panhandle Conference play as they were swept in their most recent series with the Gulf Coast Commodores. The swept was difficult to stomach for the Indians as they held leads in two of the three loses but saw those leads evaporate. Last Friday the Indians traveled to Panama City and took an early 2-1 lead. The game was tied at 3-3 after four innings and Chipola held a 5-3 after six innings of play. But Gulf Coast plated seven runs in the seventh and another three in the eighth to post a 13-5 win. LeVon Washington was 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jonathan Gilbert was 1-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

A home game on Saturday followed but again the Indians fell, this time by a score of 8-6. Gulf Coast took the early lead in this contest, leading 4-0 after five innings. Chipola tried to rally with runs scored in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings but it was not enough to overcome the Commodores. Aaron Etchison was 2-5 with a home run, double and two RBI. Blake Newalu was 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The most difficult pill to swallow in this three game swept by the Commodores was a 20-12 loss on Monday. Chipola lead 9-0 after 2 ½ innings and 12-2 after 3 ½ innings of play. But Gulf Coast rallied with six runs in the bottom of the third and then three more in the fourth to trim the Chipola lead to 12-11. Gulf Coast tied the game at 12-12 in the sixth and then exploded for eight runs in eight inning to seal the win. Washington was 2-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored. Gilbert was 2-3 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Newalu was 3-5 with 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored.

They swept by Gulf Coast followed a match up with Tallahassee in which the Indians lost their last two games in that series. After starting 3-1 in conference play the Indians have dropped five straight Panhandle games. Chipola’s record now stands at 16-17 overall and 3-6 in conference play. The Indians have a short break from conference play this week and will take on L.B. Wallace at home on Thursday at 5 pm. They will resume conference play with a 3 game series against Northwest Florida State College beginning on Monday at home.

Chipola Softball Sits In First Place

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Lady Indians softball squad traveled to Tallahassee on Tuesday for a double header against the Lady Eagles and came away with a clean sweep of the Lady Eagles. With those two wins Chipola improved to 5-1 in conference play, good enough to put them in first place of the conference

In game one Chipola shut down Tallahassee with a 4-0 win. Brittany Black was the winning pitcher as she went the distance, allowing no runs on four hits and striking out three Lady Eagles. Black improved her record to 11-4 on the year. Offensively the Lady Indians picked up four runs on four hits and committed one error. Game two went the way of Chipola by a score of 7-4. The Lady Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead but then saw the Lady Eagles chip away at that lead, making it a 5-2 game. Chipola went up 7-2 before Tallahassee plated two late runs. With the bases loaded Lady Indian pitcher Emma Stevenson got a ground out to second base to end the game. Stevenson picked up the win by allowing four runs on five hits. In doing so Stevenson improved to 16-3 on the season.

The contest against Tallahassee followed a split with the Lady Pirates of Pensacola last Saturday. Game one went to the Lady Pirates by a score of 2-0 as the Lady Indians committed four errors and managed just three hits. The Lady Indians bounced back with a 3-1 win in game two. Chipola jumped out to a 2-0 lead and then plated another run in the sixth inning to seal the win. Emma Stevenson was the winning pitcher as she allowed one run on five hits and struck out eight Lady Pirates. Nikki Roddy was 1-3 with a run scored and one RBI. Michelle Hewett was 2-3 on the day and Hannah Lovestrand was 1-3 with one RBI. Next up for the Lady Indians, who improved to 33-10 overall, will be another road contest as they travel to Niceville on Tuesday for a match up against the Lady Raiders of Northwest Florida State College.

Lady Pirates Fortunate In Win Over Graceville

By Clint Cox

On paper the Sneads Lady Pirates softball squad’s 17-5 win over Graceville last Thursday night would appear to have been a lopsided affair. That couldn’t be any further from the reality. For five innings the game was a tightly contested matchup. Twice Graceville got the bases loaded and had a chance to take the lead and momentum. But twice they failed and Sneads then exploded in the sixth inning to pull away for the 12 run district victory. “We were really fortunate to get this win,” commented Sneads Head Coach Kelvin Johnson. “The final score certainly doesn’t tell the real story about this game,” Johnson added.

Sneads struck quickly in the top of the first inning as Ashlen Wilson and Karrisa Childs both scored to give the Lady Pirates a 2-0. Graceville came right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to tie the game as Kelley Leuenberger and Liza Johnson both scored. Tiffany Guerra gave the Lady Pirates a 3-2 lead in the second inning as she scored and then Sneads made it 4-2 with a run from Jolie Johnson who scored on a past ball in the third inning.

Over the next three at bats Graceville had no trouble getting base runners. The problem they had was getting those base runners across the plate. They stranded two runners in the third inning. In the fourth inning they managed a run when Liza Johnson tripled and then scored on an RBI single from Taylor McDaniel. Shaquelle Johnson doubled and Graceville had the bases loaded with no outs. But Sneads pitcher Alisha Edenfield managed to get two strikeouts and a pop up to get Sneads out of the jam. In the fifth inning Graceville, trailing 4-3, again managed to load the bases with no outs. This time Edenfield was pulled and Childs came in to pitch for the Lady Pirates. Childs got two strikeouts and a groundout to preserve the Sneads one run lead.

In the top of the sixth the Sneads brought out the heavy artillery and when the smoke cleared, they had racked up 8 runs to take a 12-3. Childs had a 2 RBI double to score Wilson and Edenfield. A pair of Kaylas then did the damage as Kayla Rabon and Kayla Kelley both stroked two run homers. Graceville plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Jenna Martin singled and scored on a triple by Leuenberger. A Lady Pirate error on a ground ball allowed Leuenberger to score and make it a 12-5 game. But Sneads piled it on in the seventh as they got an RBI double from Rabon and RBI singles from Kelley, Deanne Berry and London Chason.

Bats Against Butts

By Clint Cox

A good time was had by all this past Saturday morning as the Marianna Middle School baseball and softball teams combined for their second annual “Bats Against Butts” day. This event is co-sponsored by the Jackson County Health Department as well as Jackson County Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) and is designed to discourage young people from using tobacco products. The dangers of using tobacco are presented to those attending and the event targets smokeless tobacco and candy flavored tobacco products since these are marketed towards a younger audience.

The baseball and softball teams combine for a co-ed slow pitch softball game with the coaches for both programs serving as pitchers and umpires. The game is unique for both the boys and girls as most of the baseball players have previously played little or no softball. For the girls the game is unique because they are accustomed to playing fast pitch softball. Prior to the game the athletes were served a breakfast of pancakes and deer sausage.

The girls softball squads have concluded their season and had another fine year as the A Team finished 10-2 and the B Team finished 9-2-1. The boys baseball season is coming to a close with their conference tournament. (see related article on page one of sports).

Marianna Downs Coosa Valley

The Marianna Bulldogs improved to 9-1 on the season with a 9-2 win over the Rebels of Coosa Valley High School. The Rebels are coached by Marianna alumni and former standout football and baseball player Bobby Hughes. Coosa Valley High is located in Harpersville, Alabama which is southeast of Birmingham.

It was a close contest through the first three innings. Innings one and two were scoreless for both teams and the Rebels took the lead in the third inning when they scored on a Bulldog balk. But in the fourth inning the Bulldogs got some offense going. Austin Branch and Colby Johnson reached on walks and then scored on a ground ball by Clayte Rooks that was mishandled at second base. Rooks later came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Jaren Bannerman. Leading 3-1 the Bulldogs added four more runs in the fifth inning as Dustin O’Hearn led off the inning with a triple. Brandon Burch was hit by a pitch and then a 2 RBI triple by Johnson scored O’Hearn and Burch to make it 5-1. Johnson scored when Branch reached base on an error. Branch didn’t stay on base long as Rooks stroked a RBI triple to bring Branch home. Rooks scored on a past ball and Marianna led 7-1. Marianna plated two more runs in the sixth inning as two Bulldog base runners scored when Rooks fly ball to left field went off the glove of the Rebel’s left fielder.

Lady Pirates Win; Pirates Fall

It was a twin bill in Sneads on Tuesday night as the Lady Pirates softball squad hosted Franklin County and the Pirates baseball team played host to Bozeman. In softball action the Lady Pirates broke open a close game in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to an 8-0 win over their visitors. Karissa Childs was the winning pitcher as she went the distance, allowing no runs on 2 hits and striking out eight Lady Seahawks. The contest was scoreless through four innings but the Lady Pirates finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Bridgett Dawson and Joni Bonine led off the inning with walks. Kayla Kelley stroked a RBI single to score Dawson. A single by Ashlen Wilson loaded the bases and then Bonine scored on a sacrifice fly by Alisha Edenfield.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, with two outs and Sneads up 2-0, Meagan Smith came off the bench to pinch hit and crushed a shot up the middle. Jolie Johnson came in to run for Smith and scored on a Lady Seahawk error with Dawson at bat. Then the bases got loaded up as Bonine singled and Kelley walked. Wilson then sent a shot down the third base line for a 2 RBI single to score Dawson and Bonine. That put the Lady Pirates up 5-0 but they were not through. Edenfield reached on an error that allowed Kelley to score. Childs helped her own cause with a RBI single to score Wilson. The final run of the inning came when Edenfield scored on a throwing error on a pick play attempt at first base. With the win Sneads improved to 9-3 on the year and will play at Graceville in a district matchup on Thursday evening.

The Pirate baseball squad found the going much rougher as the Bucks of Bozeman jumped out to an early lead and went on to win 16-2. Bozeman plated seven runs in their first three at bats to take a 7-0 lead. Sneads got two runs in the bottom of the third as Jerry Bamburg reached on an error. Aaron Green followed by reaching on a bunt and then Bubba Carpenter moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt. Bamburg came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Marcus Beauchamp. Trevin Hall sent a shot into the outfield to score Green and make it a 7-2 game. But the Bucks poured it on after that scoring nine more runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Chipola Baseball Wins Three; Drops One

The Chipola Indians picked up three straight wins in the Panhandle Conference before dropping a game to Tallahassee on Monday. With the recent contests Chipola’s record now stands at 15-13 overall and 3-2 in conference play. Last Wednesday the Indians downed Pensacola by a score of 9-3. Three Indians batters went deep as Cody Martin, Joey Rapp and Michael Revell all stroked home runs. Garrett Baker got the win on the mound as he went 4 2/3 innings, giving up three hits, two runs and striking out three batters. Chipola fell behind 1-0 in the second inning but bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. They added two more in the fifth and three more in the eighth to notch the win.

They followed that win with a slugfest win over the Pirates on Friday in Pensacola. Chipola pounded out 14 hits en route to a 12-11 win. Josh Allen had a big day as he went 4-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. C.J. Riefenhauser was the winning pitcher going four innings and giving up eight hits, allowing three runs and striking out two batters. Baker came in the game as well and recorded a save. Chipola took an early 6-1 lead and then pushed it to a 9-2 lead in the fifth inning. They pushed that lead to 11-3 but then saw the Pirates rally to make a game of it. Pensacola scored eight runs in three innings to pull within one run. But the Indians held on for the close one run victory.

This past Saturday the Indians began their series against Tallahassee at home and came away with a 5-3 victory. LeVon Washington’s three run homer in the third inning proved to be the difference in the game. Washington went 2-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. Cody Martin went 2-4 with one RBI. Austin Wright was the winning pitcher as he threw 7 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, three runs and striking out seven Eagles. Rodney Quintero picked up a save in relief work for the Indians.

Game two of the Tallahassee series was on the road Monday and Chipola fell 7-1. It was just one of those days where not much good happened to the Indians. They were out hit 13-3 by the Eagles and trailed 6-0 before scoring their only run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Three Indian errors did not help their cause.

The Indians were slated to play host to Tallahassee in the final game of this three games series on Wednesday in Marianna. Results of that contest were not available at press time. Gulf Coast is next up on the conference schedule as the upcoming three game series begins on Friday in Panama City. On Saturday the Indians play host to the Commodores at 1:00 pm and game three will be back in Panama City on Monday.

Chipola Softball Takes On Panhandle Conference

The Chipola Lady Indians softball squad completed their non-conference schedule this past week as they prepared to open up play in the Panhandle Conference on Wednesday at home against Gulf Coast. The ladies entered conference play with a record of 28-9 and ranked #3 in the state of Florida.

In the last four games the Lady Indians went 2-2 as they picked up an 11-1 win over Middle Georgia on Monday. Emma Stevenson was the winning pitcher. This past weekend they traveled to Jacksonville and notched an 11-1 win over St. Pete on Friday night. The Indians started the 1st inning off with 2 runs on 2 hits. In the bottom of the inning St Pete would score their only run off of Chipola’s 2 errors.  In the second inning Brittany Black would start the scoring with a homerun to right center.  The Indians would end up scoring three runs on four hits.  After not scoring in the 3rd inning, the Indians scored 3 runs in the 4th.  In the 5th inning the Lady Indians would score 3 more runs to extend their lead to 10.   After getting three outs in the bottom of the 5th inning, the Indians would win the game by mercy rule.  Brittany Black would get the win, throwing all 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 4 strikeouts. On Saturday the ladies found the going rough as they fell 4-3 to Seminole State (Oklahoma) and then lost 2-1 to Florida State College of Jacksonville.

2009 State Volleyball Coach of the Year for Florida

Sheila Roberts, head volleyball coach at Sneads High School, has been named the 2009 State Volleyball Coach of the Year for Florida. This award was presented by the National Federation of High School Coaches Association and the Florida High School Athletic Association. Sheila has been teaching for 19 years in Florida and coaching volleyball for 13 years. She has been the head coach at Sneads for the past 6 seasons. During that time, her teams have either finished first or second in district play with three District Championship titles. In 2008, Coach Roberts’ team made history by being the first Sneads volleyball team to make it to the Regional Final. In 2009, the Lady Pirates finished their second consecutive season at the Regional Final match. Five of Coach Roberts’ seniors have signed to play college volleyball.

Coach Roberts states, “I have always been a very competitive person. When I began my coaching career, I knew I had a disadvantage because I did not play college ball. This motivated me to be a student of the game. I believe that successful coaches never stop learning and growing. As far as my coaching goes, each season should be better than the last. I have high expectations for myself, and my athletes. At Sneads, I have been blessed with some of the most talented and hard working athletes in the state of Florida! As I have watched their determination, dedication, and commitment, they have inspired me to be the best I can be for them.”

Chipola Baseball Opens Conference Play

By Clint Cox
The Chipola Indians baseball squad got off to a rough start in the 2010 Panhandle Conference season as they dropped their opening game in a 6-0 road loss to Pensacola on Monday. With the loss the Indians fell to 13-12 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and then added three more in the bottom of the fifth inning. One more run was added in the eight to seal the victory for the home team. The Indian bats never got going as they could only muster three hits on the day and those came from LeVon Washington, Michael Revell and Aaron Etchison. Austin Wright took the loss on the mound for the Indians as he went five innings and gave up two runs on five hits and struck out five Pirates.

The Indians were slated to have a rematch against the Pirates on Wednesday if the weather permitted. Results of that game, if played, were not available at press time. Game three of this series is scheduled for Friday in Pensacola. The Indians follow that series up with a three game series against Tallahassee with game one in Marianna on Saturday at 1 pm. Game two is in Tallahassee on Monday and Game three is back in Marianna on Wednesday at 5 pm.

Chipola was coming off a weekend series against Gordon College in which they captured two out of three games at home. Last Friday they fell 5-4 but then fought back on Saturday to get two wins. They won game one on Saturday by a score of 3-2 and then won big in game two on the day with a 16-3 victory.

As they head into conference play the Indians are led offensively by Eric Sauls (.438 33 RBI & 5 HR); Blake Newalu (.393 11 RBI) and Cody Martin (.379 23 RBI & 4 HR).

Hornets Hang On For Win Over Tigers

By Clint Cox

The Cottondale Hornets baseballs squad jumped out to a big lead and then held on for an 11-7 win over district rival Graceville on Tuesday night. Drew Bellamy got the win for the Hornets on the mound although the Tigers took the first lead of the game. Clay Jenkins scored on a RBI single from Devin Cassidy and Graceville led 1-0 after a half inning of play. Cottondale countered with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Patrick McClain doubled and Ryan Morrisey and Chris Clemmons both drew walks. All three came home to score in the inning as Aaron O’Bert singled and Caleb Toole stroked a sacrifice fly.

The big inning for the Hornets came in the bottom of the third as they were still on top 3-1. The Hornets scored six runs with four of them coming on a grand slam home run by Patrick McClain. Scoring in the inning were McClain, Toole, Clemmons, Devin Thomas, Michael Hill and Trent Jackson. Leading 9-1 the Hornets might have felt they had the game in the bag. Graceville thought otherwise and came right back with six runs of their own in the top of the fourth inning. The Tigers managed to load the bases and then two Hornet errors allow two Tigers to cross the plate. Morrisey came into relieve Bellamy on the mound but the Tigers still kept fighting. With the bases still loaded Nick Papryzcki came home to score on a walk. That cut the deficit to 9-4 and another Tiger scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-5. Two more errors by the Hornets allowed two more Tigers, including Jenkins and Devin Cassidy to score. When the dust settled on the inning Graceville trailed by just two runs at 9-7.

But that would be all the run production for the Tigers and the Hornets managed to get a couple of insurance runs late in the game. McClain led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double and the scored on a RBI single from Clemmons. Leading 10-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning the Hornets got one more run as Chris Krauser led off the inning with a single and Thomas came into run for him. Thomas advanced to third base on a Tiger error and then came home to score on a McClain RBI single. On that same play O’Bert tried to score from second base but Tiger left fielder fired a shot to home plate and Jacky Miles made the grab and tag out of O’Bert to end the inning. Cassidy managed a double for Graceville in the top of the seventh but that was all the offense the Tigers could muster and the Hornets held on for the four run victory.

Cottondale improved to 3-5 on the season and 2-4 in district play. Graceville fell to 1-6 on the season.

Chipola Softball Downs Darton; Begin Conference Play Next Week

By Clint Cox

The Chipola Lady Indians softball squad kept up their hot pace by picking up two more wins this past Saturday over Darton College. Game one was a tight contest with Chipola edging Darton 3-2. Brittany Black got the win in the pitcher’s circle in game one, going 6 1/3 innings and giving up two earned runs on 9 hits. She allowed no walks and struck out six Lady Cavaliers. Offensively the Lady Indians were led by Hannah Lovestrand as she went 2-2 with one run scored and one RBI. Lovestrand helped Chipola take a 3-0 lead in the third inning and then saw Darton narrow the margin with a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh innings.

Game two was a lopsided affair with Chipola winning big in an 11-2 trashing of the visitors in five innings. The Lady Indians got their bats going as Nikki Roddy led the way going 3-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI. Black was 2-3 with 2 runs scored and Kellie Todd was 2-3 with 3 RBI. Michelle Hewett was 3-4 with 2 runs scored. Chipola took an early 1-0 lead but saw Darton take a 2-1 lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Lady Bulldogs Hammer Cottondale

The Marianna Lady Bulldogs softball squad used a big second inning to pound out a 16-1 win over the visiting Lady Hornets of Cottondale on Monday night. The Lady Hornets struck first however as Valarie D’Ambrosio came home to score on a Lady Bulldog error when Samantha Brainerd put the ball in play. Marianna countered in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second inning Marianna exploded for 7 runs as Mallory Dean got things going with a RBI single to score Maya Boykin. The Lady Bulldogs managed to load the bases before Allison Hutton’s RBI single score Hali Stout to make it a 3-1 game. Jennifer Cramer followed with a RBI single and then Dean came home on a throwing error to push the lead to 5-1. Whitney Lipford’s hit brought home Hutton and a sacrifice fly from Lindsey Basford scored Cramer to put Marianna up 7-1. The final run of the inning came when Boykin racked up a RBI single to score Lipford and give Marianna an 8-1 lead going into the top of the third inning. After holding Cottondale scoreless Marianna plated five more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 13-1 lead.

In the final at bat for Marianna in the fourth inning Marianna loaded up the bases with Lady Bulldogs and Lipford’s grounder could not be fielded by Cottondale. Hutton and Cramer scored and Lipford made it all the way to second base. A Cottondale error on a ground ball from Boykin allowed Lipford to score and gave the Lady Bulldogs a 15 run lead. Hutton, who went the distance for Marianna in the pitcher’s circle, closed out the game in the top of the fifth. She struck out six batters on the night and allowed just one hit.

The win improved the Lady Bulldogs to 7-1 on the season and they were back in action on Tuesday night in Panama City against Arnold. Results of that contest were not available at press time. They will next be in action on Friday when they travel to Pensacola to take on Pensacola Catholic. The Lady Hornets will be back in action on Friday as well when they play host to Bay.

Tigers Rock Rattlers

The Malone Tigers baseball squad jumped on the visiting Rattlers from FAMU High Tuesday night and went on to post a 16-1 district win. Jeffery Pittman had a big night as he posted two triples and three RBI as well as picking up the win on the mound.

FAMU got an early 1-0 lead but Malone responded with nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Blake Hensen scored the first run for the Tigers when he came home on a throwing error. Pittman stroked his first triple to score another run for Malone. Preston Matthews came into run for Pittman and scored on a wild pitch. That put Malone up 3-1. Derek Orshall drew a walk and later came home on a throwing error. Austin Lockart came up with a 2 RBI single to score Will Dunaway and Sean Henry. That put the Tigers up 6-1 but they were not done. Travlean Wood scored on a Nick Breeden RBI single and then Pittman hit another triple that scored Hensen and Breeden. Malone took a 9-1 lead and then held FAMU scoreless in the top of the second inning.

Malone picked up another run in the bottom of the second when Henry scored on a throwing error to make it 10-1. In the bottom of the third inning Breeden came home to score on a RBI single by Orshall. After Malone loaded the bases Lockart ripped a triple down the line to score three Tigers and make it a 14-1 game. Lockart then came home on a wild pitch to give Malone a 14 run lead. The final run for Malone came in the bottom of the fourth inning when an Orshall double scored Pittman to make it 16-1.

Malone improved to 2-2 on the season and will play host to Graceville on Thursday night at 6 pm.

Greenway Plans Unveiled

By Clint Cox

Jackson County Parks and Recreation Director Chuck Hatcher unveiled the proposed plans for a portion of the Chipola River Greenway last Thursday night at the Citizen’s Lodge Park. Also joining Hatcher was Brian Bearwood of Melvin Engineering, who has worked closely with Hatcher to develop the proposed plans for this greenway trail area.

The plans unveiled last Thursday deal with an area that encompasses the east shore lines of the Chipola River in the area behind Riverside Elementary and property located near the river intersection with the Highway 90 Bridge. Hatcher explained that these properties, along with several other parcels of properties along the Chipola River, have been purchased and leased to local governments (Jackson County and the City of Marianna) for the purpose of preserving the areas natural beauty and allowing for low impact public useage through the establishment of a Greenways Trail System.

In the same manner that Citizen’s Lodge Park was improved over the years with a series of grants, the plans for the new areas would be similar. Hatcher stressed that their first priority is to get these areas open to the public and then gradually make improvements as grants are received.

Hatcher and Bearwood explained to those attending Thursday night’s meeting about the various aspects of the plan for the area. There will be a series of nature trails that use some existing logging trails and dirt lanes. These trails will be gradually improved and will be primarily designed for hiking and bicycling. Since this portion of the Chipola River is also part of the State Canoe Trail for the river, there will be several river access landings that will be designed for non-motorized boat launches (canoes, kayaks, small non-motorized boats). There will also be designated river access areas for hikers and/or folks wanting to access the trails from the river.

Long range plans hope to have some type of bridge or cross over to the western shore line of this same portion of the river since this parcel of land has been leased to the City of Marianna. One idea for the bridge or cross over is to refurbish Bellamy Bridge and relocate it to this area. Hatcher stressed that this idea of relocating Bellamy Bridge is just an idea at this stage and many things would have to come together for this to become a reality.

Proposals for the grants are to be submitted by the end of this month and Hatcher plans to get things rolling as soon as grant funding becomes available.

Indians Host Conyers Hardwood Flooring Classic

The Chipola Baseball squad played host this past weekend to the Conyers Hardwood Flooring Classic. The Indians found the going rough as they went 1-3 in four games over the course of three days. Six teams, including three in the top 15 in the nation, took part in the classic.

On Friday the Indians fell 9-5 to Miami Dade, which entered the game ranked #15 in the nation. Chipola took an early 1-0 lead but could not hold it as the Sharks came back to take a 3-1 lead. Chipola tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth but Miami Dade plated four runs in the sixth to pull away from the Indians. Cody Martin led the Indians at the plate going 2-3 with 1 RBI. They bounced back from that loss with a 5-3 win over Middle Georgia in their first game on Saturday. CJ Riefenhauser got the win on the mound, going seven innings and giving up five hits while striking out six batters. Martin was 1-3 with 3 RBI and Eric Sauls stroked a home run to lead the Indians on offense.

The Saturday nightcapper saw the Indians blow a 4-1 lead as St. Petersburg, ranked #12 in the nation, rallied for six runs in the seventh inning for a 10-4 victory. Martin’s three run homer in the third inning put the Indians up 4-1 but St. Pete battled back to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning. The Indians committed five costly errors in the loss. They closed out the classic with a close 3-2 loss to Kanakee on Sunday afternoon. After falling behind 2-0 Chipola tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on a two RBI double from Joey Rapp. But the visitors from Illinois plated a run in the top of the fourth and that was all the offense from the remainder of the game. Rapp was 3-4 on the day with two double and Josh Allen was 2-3 with a RBI.

The Indians fell to 10-10 on the season and played host to Grand Rapids on Tuesday afternoon. Results of that game were not available at press time. Bulldogs Pick Up Two Wins to Remain Unbeaten

By Clint Cox

The Marianna Bulldogs baseball squad is off to a great start after downing the Bainbridge Bearcats Monday night and Westover last Friday. With those two wins the Bulldogs upped their record to 6-0 on the season. They will be back in action this Friday night as they play host to Port St. Joe.

On Monday night in Marianna Dustin O’Hearn took the mound for the Bulldogs but saw Bainbridge take an early 1-0 lead. Marianna was scoreless in their first two at bats but O’Hearn kept the Bearcats in check in the second and third innings. In the bottom of the third Bradley Middleton drew a walk and Clayte Rooks was hit by a pitch. Austin Branch laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and then Colby Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jaren Bannerman grounded out to second but brought home Middleton to tie the game at 1-1. A throwing error on the Bearcats catcher allowed Marianna to take the lead as Rooks and Johnson came home to score. O’Hearn then helped his own cause with a RBI single to score Alex Bigale and give Marianna a 4-1 lead.

The Bulldogs made it a 5-1 game in the bottom of the fourth when Middleton scored from third on a catcher interference call. Bainbridge battled back with a run in the sixth and a run in the seventh to cut it to a 5-3 game. Austin Branch had come in to relieve O’Hearn back in the fourth and managed to strike out the last Bearcat to seal the Bulldog victory.

Last Friday night the Bulldogs traveled up to Bainbridge and in a close game pulled out an 8-7 win over Westover. Marianna fell behind early as Westover took a four run lead. Marianna countered with a couple of runs in the bottom of the second inning. O’Hearn scored on a RBI single from Anthony Williams and Zack Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Middleton. Marianna pulled ahead in the bottom of the third when Bannerman scored on a double by Bigale. Two more Bulldogs scored on Westover errors and Marianna led 5-4. Westover pulled back ahead with two runs in the following inning to make it a 6-5 game. Marianna tied the game at 6-6 on a Bigale single that scored Johnson. The Bulldogs then rallied to win in the bottom of the seventh when they managed to load the bases and Johnson scored the winning run on a ground ball by Smith.

Marianna and Graceville Compete in Panhandle Open

The Marianna and Graceville High School Girls and Boys Track and Field Teams competed against 13 other Panhandle school teams February 27, 2010 at Bay High School’s Panhandle Open. The meet was hosted at Tommy Oliver Stadium in Panama City under cold and breezy conditions. The threat of rain never materialized but conditions were cold for both runners and observers alike. Both squads showed a good mix of several new comers competing for the first time in a larger meet and a group of veterans that look to shine in their senior year.

The Marianna girls who make up the 4 x 100 meter relay team came away Saturday with an impressive 1st place finish and several other individual metals. The girl’s 1st place relay team includes: Treshee Patterson, Derrika Fitzpatrick, Christina Wynn, and Sharee Williams. Tia Bass’s 86 foot discus throw was good enough to give her 4th place in the event, Andreal Johnson and Derrika Fitzpatrick also competed in this event. Sharee Williams placed 5th in the 200 meter dash. Christina Wynn got 3rd in the long jump with a jump of 15’ 5.5” and Treshae Patterson had a jump of 14’ 3.5” for 7th. Christina Wynn also took 3rd in the triple jump scoring a jump of 33 feet. The Marianna Girls Team scored well enough to place a respectable 8th in the overall competition Saturday.

The Graceville Girls also fared well as some of their top finishers included Mychea Williams finishing second in the 100 meter dash. Jessica McClendon brought home first place in the shot put with a toss of 33.07. In the 4x100 Meter Relay the Lady Tigers took 5th. In the girls long jump Brittany Smith came in 8th while Jalisa McSwain finished 9th; In the triple jump it was Trineity Boston coming in 9th. Overall the Lady Tigers finished in 9th place.

Emerald Coast Hospice Offering Camp Brave Heart

Emerald Coast Hospice will be offering a camp for children this summer. Camp Brave Heart is designed for children, ages 7-14, who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Regardless of the type of loss or the reason for the loss, all children throughout the area are invited to apply to attend Camp Brave Heart. A prior affiliation with Emerald Coast Hospice is not a prerequisite.

Experiencing a loss at any age is difficult, but it is especially hard on a child. Camp Brave Heart is run by clinical experts who understand the healing process and who genuinely care about the children that are left behind. While the emphasis is on healing, there is play time as well. The children will participate in indoor and outdoor activities such as arts and crafts, field games, and swimming. Children will also have the opportunity to honor the people they have lost with a very special memorial service.

The camp will be held at Camp Timpoochee located in Niceville, Fl. The dates for the camp are July 16th-19th. Volunteer applications to assist with Camp Brave Heart are being accepted. For more information or to receive an application for a child to attend or to volunteer simply call Gino Mayo or Sherri Stone at 850-526-3577 or go to www.gentiva.com/hospice.
