Graceville Rallies For Win Over Malone

By Clint Cox

GRACEVILLE – For 6 ½ innings last Friday night Malone was in full control of their district rival Graceville. But Malone saw their 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning vanish, and then Garrett Steverson put the final nail in the coffin with a walk off grand slam to propel Graceville to a 11-9 win.
Malone jumped out to an early lead in their first at bat as Blake Hinson’s RBI single scored a run. Aaron Conrad’s RBI single scored Kevin Warren and then Jeffery Pittman’s RBI single scored Conrad. Dayvon Larry capped off the inning with a 3 run home run to put Malone up 6-0. Graceville managed a run in their first at bat but Malone added another run in both the second and third innings. The run in the third inning came on a solo home run by Larry. Graceville countered with a run in the bottom of the third inning as Justin Miles scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2 in favor of Malone.
Miles entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of Tyler Crutchfield and began to cool the Malone bats. Over the next 3 2/3 innings Malone managed only one run as Warren reached on an error and then scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh inning. Meanwhile Malone starter Derek Orshall had kept the Graceville bats quite for the most part and Malone held a 9-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
That is when the wheels began to come off for Malone, as Graceville quickly jumped on Malone relief pitcher Aaron Conrad. Steverson led off the inning with a double and then Aaron Taylor singled. Steverson was able to score on a throwing error to make it 9-3. Joey Sports followed with a single and then Jacky Miles reached on an error that also allowed Taylor to score. Jordan Cox then stroked an RBI single deep into left field to score Sports and then Jacky Miles scored on a double steal to make it a 9-6 game. Chris Willis pounded out a RBI double to score Cox and pull Graceville to within just two runs. Orshall was reinserted into the game and faced off against Steverson as Graceville had batted around. After going to a full count, Steverson stroked a shot over the left field wall that brought home four Graceville Tigers and the win.
Both squads were coming off wins from the night before as Graceville (3-6) had beaten Bethlehem and with the win over Malone improved to 3-6 on the season. Malone had pulled off their own rally, edging Cottondale 9-8 in a come from behind victory. With the loss to Graceville Malone fell to 6-2.

Indians Split Conference Openers

By Clint Cox
The Chipola Indians baseball squad opened up the 2009 Panhandle Conference season with a split, winning on Friday in Pensacola and then falling at home on Saturday to Tallahassee. They got the conference schedule off to a good start with a 10-0 win over the Pirates as Pat Corbin went the distance and pitched the shutout against the defending Panhandle Conference Champions. Chipola had the hot bats as they stroked four home runs, with two coming from Joey Rapp. Marc Bourgeois came up with a home run and Andy Fermin stroked a grand slam to lead the Indians offensively.
For as well as they played on Friday, Saturday’s contest against Tallahassee turned out to be a different story. They trailed for much of the ball game and, although they mustered a late game rally, fell 10-9 to the Eagles. Tallahassee took an early 2-0 lead before Chipola countered in the bottom of the second inning with four runs. Bourgeois singled and Jake Rogers drew a walk. Daniel Renfroe RBI single scored Bourgeois and Blake Newalu’s RBI single scored Rogers. Renfroe later scored and Newalu came home on a RBI single from Dayne Read. That gave Chipola a 4-2 lead, which held until the fourth inning. The Eagles struck for five runs in the fourth and then added two more in the fifth inning to take a 9-4 lead. Chipola chipped away at that lead with two runs in the fifth inning as Bourgeois doubled and then scored on a RBI single by Jordan Lucas. Rogers then came up with a RBI double to score Bourgeois to make it a 9-6 game. Tallahassee added another run, which turned out to be the winning run, in the top of the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth Indian Mark Ellis made it a 10-9 game with a three run homer. But the rally fell short and with the loss Chipola fell to 1-1 in conference play and 17-10 overall. They took on Northwest Florida on Wednesday in Niceville but the results of that game were not available at press time. The Indians will be back in action this weekend when they play host to Gulf Coast on Friday at 4 pm and Pensacola on Saturday at 1 pm.

By Clint Cox
The Chipola Lady Indians and Chipola Indians basketball squads both captured their respective state championships this past Saturday night in thrilling fashion before a standing room only crowd at the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
The Lady Indians set the tone for the night as Pearl Johnson’s drive to the basket was good for two points with 3.5 seconds, giving Chipola a 68-67 win over Gulf Coast. The Lady Indians had gotten off to a sluggish start and trailed 35-27 at the half. They stormed back in the second half and took the lead, only to see Gulf Coast reclaim that lead. In the final moments both teams traded the lead but with 12 seconds to play Gulf Coast went up 67-66. After a time out Johnson took the ball the length of the floor and hit the game winning shot. Johnson led Chipola, which improved to 27-5 on the year, with 20 points. Williams followed with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. Williams was named the Tournament MVP and State Player of the Year.
With the State Championship, their fourth in the last five years, Chipola will travel to Salina, Kansas for the National Tournament beginning March 17th. Chipola’s opening round opponent in the National Tournament had not been determined yet at press time. And like the women’s game the Indians contest against the Commodores went right down to the wire as Chipola edged Gulf Coast 68-65. The game was tied at 36-36 at the half after Chipola had trailed by as many as 7 points during the first half. The Indians pulled out ahead in the second half by as many as 12 points, but Gulf Coast rallied in the closing minutes with some hot shooting from beyond the 3 point line. The Commodore rally however fell short and the Indians claimed their third straight championship and their fifth title in the last six years. Casey Mitchell led Chipola with 17 points and was named the tournament MVP and the State Player of the Year. Torye Pelham followed with 13 points and 15 rebounds. Malcolm Armstead added 12 and Gary Flowers hit 12.

The Cottondale Hornets baseball squad played host to Bethlehem on Tuesday in a double header that saw the Hornets win big in game one and fall by one run in game two. Cody Saye got the win in game one as he pitched the Hornets to a 12-2 victory in five innings. He went the distance, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 7 Wildcats. Jeremy Anderson replaced Whitehead on the base pads and Chris Clemmons singled to give the Hornets runners at first and second. A sacrifice bunt by Josh Gainer moved the runners to second and third and then Anderson came home on a wild pitch to give Cottondale a 3-2 lead. Bethlehem responded by tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth.
The Hornets missed an opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of fifth after getting runners to second and third with two outs. But the Wildcats got the third out to kill the Hornet rally. Bethlehem followed that up with a two run home run in the top of the sixth and then added another run later in the inning to make it 6-3. Cottondale mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth when Drew Bellamy stroked a stand up double to center field and then scored on a RBI single by Farren. Aaron O’Bert followed up with a RBI single to score Farren to cut the lead to 6-5. But that was as close as the Hornets could come and the game was called in the sixth inning due to being a double header. With the split Cottondale now stands at 5-4 on the season.
