Local fans turned out in large numbers for a beautiful afternoon of high school baseball this past Saturday when Marianna played host to Sneads. The Bulldogs got two runs in the second inning and went on to a 3-1 victory. Dustin Larkin got the starting nod on the mound for the Bulldogs and went three innings, giving up no runs and no hits. Taylor Edge countered on the mound for the Pirates and went the distance, giving up 3 runs and striking out four. In the second inning Zack Smith’s RBI double scored Laramie Dryden. Tyler Searcy later laid down a bunt single to score Dustin Miller. That gave Marianna a 2-0 lead, which held until the fifth inning when Sneads got on the scoreboard. Edge stroked a RBI double to score Bubba Carpenter and made it a one run game. But the Bulldogs countered in the bottom of the fifth when Smith doubled and Larkin brought him home on a RBI single. Brandon Hendrix came in relief of Larkin in the fourth inning, pitching 1 2/3 innings. Colby Johnson came in to relieve Hendrix and went 2 1/3 innings, giving up no runs and striking out six Pirates. Johnson was credited with a save. Both squads evened their early records at 1-1.
In JV action the Bulldogs posted an 11-1 win over the junior Pirates. Michael Mader was the winning pitcher while Taylor Dunham took the loss for the Pirates.
