The Chipola College Indians went to Hutchinson, Kansas, dreaming of a national championship, but the dream came to an end for another year Tuesday night on the hardwood at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Chipola fell to Seward County Community College of Liberal, Kansas by a score of 90-84 in the opening round of the NJCAA National Men's Basketball Tournament. The Saints were powered by a 30 point performance from Reggie Chamberlain, who leads scoring at the tournament so far. Helping Chamberlain out in the stellar performance by Seward's team were Jason Swanson and Bryan Hampton. They combined for 23 rebounds, even though as a team Chipola out rebounded Seward County 41-39.
The Indians built a 37-33 lead during the first half, but the Saints were able to outscore Chipola 38-34 in the second half to tie the game up. Seward County shot 100% from the field in overtime and 75% from the free throw line to claim the win.
Chipola will now move into the consolation bracket to play Shelton State Community College at 12 noon on Thursday. If they can do well in the consolation rounds, they could finish as high as 7th or 8th in the tournamet.
