Marianna baseball fans had the opportunity this past weekend to take in some Troy University baseball and see a steady dose of Marianna alumni leading the Trojans. Dothan was host to the ScreenTech Wiregrass Classic that in addition to Troy, featured Penn State, Wake Forest and Kennesaw State. Troy posted three wins in four games to improve to 8-1 on the season.
The Marianna connection begins with Head Coach for the Trojans, Bobby Pierce. As a 1977 graduate of Marianna, Pierce was a three sport athlete for the Bulldogs including being the starting quarterback on the 1975 & 76 football teams. But baseball is where he excelled the most, as evidenced by a solid college career in junior college and at Alabama. After several successful coaching stints, including a state championship at Chipola, he landed at Troy in 2003.
The Trojans have two former Bulldogs on their 2008 roster, including starting third baseman Trevor Tyre. After a four year stint as a Bulldog, Tyre played one season at Chipola. Last year as a sophomore at Troy he worked his way into the starting position at third base and hit .381 in 35 games. This year he is again starting at third and batting in the leadoff spot for the Trojans.
In this weekend’s action Tyre scored a couple of runs and had a hit in two of the three games in which he started, including a double against Wake Forest. Trevor is the son of Don and Marlean Tyre.
The third former Bulldog for the Trojans is Josh Storm. After his Bulldog days Storm played two seasons for the Chipola Indians and was on last year’s National Championship team. An excellent all around athlete, Storm both pitched and played a utility role at Chipola. At Troy he is concentrating on pitching and is primarily coming out of the bullpen at this time. During action this past weekend he picked up two saves, one against Penn State on Friday and another against Wake Forest on Saturday. Josh is the son of Rick Storm and Karla Sapp.
