CHIPOLA WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!

Marianna - Chipola College has won the 2008 State Championship. The win came at 6:50 Saturday night when the Indians downed the raiders of Okaloosa Walton College 89-78 at the Milton Johnson Health Center on campus in Marianna.

It was a hard fought game to the end. Chipola was leading by 9 with 6 minutes left in the game, but OWC cut the lead to 3 at the 3:30 mark of the second half. The Indians started to rebuild the lead, but the Raiders again came back and cut the margin to 4 by hitting a 3-point play with 2:40 left in the game.

Defense and free throw shooting paid off down the stretch, though, with Chipola blocking a key OWC shot and hitting a spree of free throws to post a final score of 89-78.

It is Chipola's fourth State Championship in men's basketball in the last 8 years. The Indians now have won State Championships in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008.

The win puts Chipola (32-1) on the road to Kansas for the JUCO National Tournament. Details on the Indians first round game will be announced soon, but the tournament begins on March 18th.
