Georgia makes College Basketball History, but without Graceville Grad

Atlanta - The University of Georgia Bulldogs made college basketball history on Saturday by becoming 1) the first no. 6 seed to advance to the championship game of the Southeastern Conference Basketball Tournament in modern history, and 2) becoming the first college basketball team in modern history to play two major tournament games in one day.

Georgia made the SEC Championship Game by defeating both Kentucky and Mississippi State in a single day. Both games had to be played on Saturday after the UGA vs. Kentucky game Friday night was delayed after a tornado struck downtown Atlanta and seriously damaged the Georgia Dome.

You might recall that former Graceville High School star Rashaad Singleton was recruited and signed by the Bulldogs after a stellar high school career. He has played at Georgia for the last two years, but was not with the team for yesterday's record-breaking performance.

Singleton decided to transfer from Georgia in January in hopes of finding more playing time with another college. Although announcing he would no longer play for the Bulldogs, he indicated in January he would remain at UGA through the spring semester to continue his studies.

He was extremely complimentary of his coaches and fellow players when he left the team two months ago, wishing both well. Coaches and players at Georgia returned the well-wishes.

Even though he is no longer with the team, Singleton was instrumental in helping the Bulldogs this season. He led the team in blocked shots through the fall and had played in a remarkable 72 career games at Georgia.

Singleton graduated from Graceville High School and was one of the greatest players in Tiger history. His mother played college basketball as well, playing for both Chipola College and the University of West Florida.
