Lady Bullpups Keep On Winning

by Clint Cox

The Marianna Middle School Lady Bullpups softball squad just keeps on racking up the wins. In action on Tuesday both squads picked up wins over the visiting Chipley Lady Tigers. Team One downed Chipley by a score of 6-4. They fell behind early on but rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the third inning. By the fourth inning they had taken a 4-3 and then went on to make it 6-4 in the fifth and final inning. Mallory Dean was the winning pitcher while Mia Boykin and Hayden Searcy each picked up two hits. Team One is now 10-0 on the season and has allowed just 8 runs all season. Team Two also recorded a win, improving to 9-1 with a 10-9 win. They scored a run in the bottom of the last inning to pull out the thrilling win over the Chipley squad.

Both squads are coached by Rochelle Summerwell, Sammy Basford and Scott Wiggins. They will close out the 2008 season with road games against Port St. Joe on April 8th and Cottondale on April 9th.

With a large crowd of family, friends and fellow students looking on, Michelle Hewett signed on the dotted line last Thursday to attend Chipola College on a softball scholarship. The signing was held at Marianna High School where Hewett has been a three sport athlete for the Lady Bulldogs. After having played volleyball, soccer and softball at Marianna Hewett will narrow her focus on books and softball at Chipola. "It took me a long time to decide but I’m glad and excited to be able to continue my education and softball at Chipola," the Bulldog Senior said after the signing. Chipola Lady Indian Softball Coach Belinda Hendrix was likewise pleased. "We are very excited to have Michelle join our program at Chipola. We’d like her to help us defend our National Championship and I hope we can continue to sign local players for our program," Hendrix told the crowd that gathered for the signing.

That crowd included Hewett’s family as well. She is the daughter of Tim and Alice Hewett, both of whom were proud to see a sport she has put so much into to help her earn a college scholarship. "We’re real pleased with her being able to go to Chipola and play softball. She’s been playing softball since she was old enough to pick one up so we are really excited for her," said her dad Tim. Michelle is the grand daughter of the late Roger and Juanita Hewett and the late Elwood and Willie Smith.

The Lady Pirates of Pensacola sailed into town last Thursday and when they left the Chipola Lady Indians were 4-0 in conference play. After opening the season with a double header win against North Florida, the Lady Indians swept Pensacola with some well time hitting from their offense. In game one Carolyn Moore was the hero as she went 2-2 with 4 RBI and a home run. Her 2 RBI double in the third inning broke a tie game and then her two run homer in the fourth sealed a 7-2 win. The Lady Indians pounded out 10 hits against Pensacola. Brooke Muth was the winning pitcher as she went the distance and struck out nine Lady Pirates.

In game two Pensacola took an early lead and led 3-1 before the Lady Indians score a run in the fifth inning and another in the sixth inning to tie the game. The run in the sixth came on a solo home run from Alyssa Shirey. In the bottom of the seventh, with the game still tied, Chipola managed to load the bases. That is when Covington took one deep over the centerfield wall for a walk off grand slam.

Chipola’s overall record improved to 28-6. They were scheduled to host Tallahassee on Wednesday. Results of those games were not available at press time. The Lady Indians will be on the road Saturday at Okaloosa Walton College and then host Gulf Coast next Wednesday.

Graceville Wins Tiger Match

By Clint Cox

The Graceville Tigers pulled out a 4-2 win over the Malone Tigers last Friday night in district action in Malone. Graceville had taken an early lead on a couple of throwing errors by Malone and led 2-0 going into the sixth inning. The Malone cats rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. They did so on a two RBI double from Blake Henson. In the top of the seventh inning Graceville’s Chase Ivey lead off with a single and then later scored on a fielder’s choice. Stephen Burdeshaw then scored on a throwing error by Malone to lead to the 4-2 victory for Graceville. Josh Taylor got the start for Graceville but he was relieved by Burdeshaw, who picked up the win. Graceville improved to 6-5 overall but more importantly 3-0 in district play.

Bulldogs Win 8th Straight Game

The Marianna Bulldogs picked up a big district win on Tuesday night with a 7-6 come from behind win over their arch rival the Chipley Tigers. The win was the Bulldogs 8th straight win and improved their record to 10-2 on the season. The Bulldogs were coming off a 2-0 win over Bainbridge last Thursday in which Kyle Edwards got the win on the mound. Jeremy Barber came in to relieve Edwards and picked up a save.

Troy Clemmons got the start on the mound against Chipley and the Bulldogs started well. They plated a run in the second inning when Clemmons led off with a single. Rhyne Elliott came in to run for Clemmons and Jon Sims followed with a bunt to reach first base safely. A sacrifice bunt by Lance Bailey moved the runners up and Dustin Miller’s RBI single scored Elliott to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Marianna added to that lead in the fourth inning when Clemmons again led off the inning with a single and again was replaced on the bases by Elliott. Two batters later Bailey’s sacrifice fly brought Elliott home to make it a 2-0 Bulldog lead.

Chipley rallied though and plated two runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Marianna trailed 6-3 going into their final at bat but drew a leadoff walk for Miller. After a Bulldog strikeout for the first out Brandon Gardner reached base on a fielder’s choice but Miller was forced out at second. With two outs the Bulldogs hopes appeared slim. But they got a head first slide from Adam Bigale to beat out an infield ground ball and have runners at first and second. Chipley then walked the next three batters to load the bases and score Gardner and Kyle Edwards (who replaced Bigale on the bases). Now down 6-5, a ground ball to third base by Bailey looked to be a routine final out. But the Tigers third baseman’s throw to first was in the dirt and got away from their first baseman. That allowed Laramie Dryden and Clemmons to score and culminate a come from behind rally for the district win.

Indians Drop Opening Game in Kansas

By Clint Cox

The #2 ranked Chipola Indians basketball squad saw their hopes for a National Championship squashed in the opening round with an 89-84 overtime loss to Seward County. With the loss Chipola fell into the consolation bracket and are scheduled to take on Shelton State at noon on Thursday. Chipola held a 10 point lead twice in the game but could not hold off the Saints.

Seward County took an early lead but Chipola rallied to take the lead. By half time the Indians held a 37-33 lead. The second half was a struggle though for the Indians as the lead went back and forth the entire half. With seven minutes to play the score was tied at 57-57. Four minutes later the game was still tied at 58-58. Seward County took a brief 62-61 lead with just over two minutes to play and then led 68-65 with less than a minute remaining. With 18 seconds left the Saints held a three point lead but Clevin Hannah’s 3 point shot with seconds to play tied the game at 71-71 and forced an overtime.

In overtime the Indians quickly hit the first bucket but from that point it was all Seward County. The Saints reeled off 8 unanswered points to take an 81-73 lead with two minutes to play. Chipola kept battling but could never get any closer than the final score of 89-84.

The Saints were paced by Reggie Chamberlin as he pumped in 30 points, including going 17-18 from the free throw line. In all the Saints scorched the free throw line by hitting 40-49 free throws. Chipola countered by going 14-23 from the charity stripe. The Indians were led by Vernon Teel with 16 points, Hannah with 15, Mario Little with 13, Casey Mitchell with 12 and Mario Edwards with 10.

Chipola falls in Round One of National Tournament

The Chipola College Indians went to Hutchinson, Kansas, dreaming of a national championship, but the dream came to an end for another year Tuesday night on the hardwood at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

Chipola fell to Seward County Community College of Liberal, Kansas by a score of 90-84 in the opening round of the NJCAA National Men's Basketball Tournament. The Saints were powered by a 30 point performance from Reggie Chamberlain, who leads scoring at the tournament so far. Helping Chamberlain out in the stellar performance by Seward's team were Jason Swanson and Bryan Hampton. They combined for 23 rebounds, even though as a team Chipola out rebounded Seward County 41-39.

The Indians built a 37-33 lead during the first half, but the Saints were able to outscore Chipola 38-34 in the second half to tie the game up. Seward County shot 100% from the field in overtime and 75% from the free throw line to claim the win.

Chipola will now move into the consolation bracket to play Shelton State Community College at 12 noon on Thursday. If they can do well in the consolation rounds, they could finish as high as 7th or 8th in the tournamet.

Preview: Chipola vs. Seward County

Chipola College will begin its quest for a National Championship tonight against a team from Kansas that definitely was peaking at the end of the year.

The Saints of Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas, have put together an impressive 29-5 record this year. They have won 16 of their last 17 games, including a Kansas championship game win over #9 Cowley College to make the national junior college tournament for the first time in 10 years.

The last time Seward County made it to the NJCAA men's tournament, they finished third.

The Chipola Indians come into the tournament, of course, riding a 32-1 record and ranked #2 in the nation. Their only loss this season was to #6 ranked Okaloosa Walton, a team they defeated in the Florida state championship game to claim back-to-back state championships.

The game is set for 8:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kansas. The winner will play the winner of the Shelton State Community College vs. Northeastern Oklahoma A&M game in round two of the tournament, while the loser will move into the consolation bracket.

The game can be heard live online by clicking here.

Georgia makes College Basketball History, but without Graceville Grad

Atlanta - The University of Georgia Bulldogs made college basketball history on Saturday by becoming 1) the first no. 6 seed to advance to the championship game of the Southeastern Conference Basketball Tournament in modern history, and 2) becoming the first college basketball team in modern history to play two major tournament games in one day.

Georgia made the SEC Championship Game by defeating both Kentucky and Mississippi State in a single day. Both games had to be played on Saturday after the UGA vs. Kentucky game Friday night was delayed after a tornado struck downtown Atlanta and seriously damaged the Georgia Dome.

You might recall that former Graceville High School star Rashaad Singleton was recruited and signed by the Bulldogs after a stellar high school career. He has played at Georgia for the last two years, but was not with the team for yesterday's record-breaking performance.

Singleton decided to transfer from Georgia in January in hopes of finding more playing time with another college. Although announcing he would no longer play for the Bulldogs, he indicated in January he would remain at UGA through the spring semester to continue his studies.

He was extremely complimentary of his coaches and fellow players when he left the team two months ago, wishing both well. Coaches and players at Georgia returned the well-wishes.

Even though he is no longer with the team, Singleton was instrumental in helping the Bulldogs this season. He led the team in blocked shots through the fall and had played in a remarkable 72 career games at Georgia.

Singleton graduated from Graceville High School and was one of the greatest players in Tiger history. His mother played college basketball as well, playing for both Chipola College and the University of West Florida.

BONIFAY – The Marianna Bulldog baseball team picked up their first district win of the season with a 3-2 win in extra innings against Holmes County on Tuesday night. Adam Bigale was the offensive hero of the night as the junior knocked in all three of the Bulldog runs, including the game winning run in the top of the ninth inning. The Bulldogs also had good pitching performances from starter Troy Clemmons and reliever Rhyne Elliott. Clemons went 5 1/3 innings before giving way to Elliott, who then finished the game.

Marianna jumped out to an early lead as Bigale’s two RBI single, in the top of the second inning scored Dustin Miller and Tyler Wilson. Meanwhile Clemmons held Holmes County scoreless through the first three innings. The Blue Devils chipped away at the Bulldog lead, plating a run in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game. Elliott entered the game in the fifth and held the Blue Devils scoreless but the game remained tied 2-2 at the end of seven innings. Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth inning but in the top of the ninth Miller lead the inning off with a single. After getting two outs the Bulldog’s Brandon Gardner came up with a swinging bunt to reach first base safely. That moved Miller to second base and set up Bigale to be the hero with his game winning RBI single to score Miller. In the bottom of the ninth the Bulldogs had back to back outstanding defensive plays from first baseman Jon Sims to hang on for the victory.

Marianna improved to 8-2 on the season and 1-0 in district play. They will host Bainbridge on Thursday evening. Holmes County fell to 9-2 on the season and 0-1 in district play.

Indians Capture State Championship

By Clint Cox

Mario Little Tourney MVP cuts the net

The Chipola Indians got a 24 point performance from the State’s Player of the Year, Mario Little, and in doing so captured the FCCAA / NJCAA Region VIII State Championship with a 89-78 win over Okaloosa Walton. The state’s title game came down just as it should have, #1 Chipola taking on #2 Okaloosa Walton. Little, who had scored just 6 points in the two previous games in the tournament, saved his best performance for the biggest game of the season. Both teams were red hot to start the game and fans were treated to an offensive showcase. Midway through the first half Little gave Chipola a 21-19 lead but the Raiders stormed right back to recapture the lead. Little’s reverse layup moments later put Chipola back ahead. A 3-pointer by Little with 2 minutes to play in the first half put the Indians up 43-39. Chipola’s other Mario, Mario Edwards, secured a four point lead for the Indians at the half with a NBA 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Leading 48-44 to begin the second half Chipola began to surge ahead. They did it with defense as Edwards came up with a steal and layup. Then Little came up with a steal and layup to give the Indians a 54-48 lead three minutes into the second half. Back to back 3 pointers from Casey Mitchell gave the Indians a 62-54 lead with 12 minutes to play. The Raiders managed to cut the Indian lead back to 3, 74-71, with just under 4 minutes to play. But the Indians responded and a 3 pointer from Little with 2 minutes remaining put them up 81-74. From there the Indians made their free throws down the stretch and went on to their 11 victory. They outscored the Raiders 15-7 in the final 4 minutes.

In addition to Little’s 24 points, the Indians were paced by three other players in double figures. Edwards had 14 points, Mitchell had 13 and Vernon Teel added 11. Head Coach Greg Heiar said it was another big win for his squad against a top notch opponent. "It feels really good," fourth-year Chipola coach Greg Heiar said after the win, his third state title as the Indians head coach and fourth as a member of the staff. "To do it against such great competition in the best league in the country is just really, really good. "(OW coach Bruce Stewart) has a tremendous team. They made us work hard for everything we got tonight."

Chipola had advanced to the championship game with a 85-62 win over Indian River on Friday night. Mitchell had the hot hand that night hitting 6 3-pointers and finishing with 22 points. Malik Alvin added 14 points and Edwards followed with 11 points. The Indians were hot from the start and took a 53-32 lead at the half. That hot start was good to see for Indians fans and Heiar because their opening round win over Central Florida was anything but a hot start. After not playing in 11 days, Chipola shook off a sluggish performance and posted a 73-62 win over the Patriots. Gary Flowers led with 15 points and Edwards had 13. The Indians led by as many as 10 points in the first half but saw that lead dwindle to four at the half. Midway through the second half they lead by only three before pushing out to a 12 point lead.

CHIPOLA WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!

Marianna - Chipola College has won the 2008 State Championship. The win came at 6:50 Saturday night when the Indians downed the raiders of Okaloosa Walton College 89-78 at the Milton Johnson Health Center on campus in Marianna.

It was a hard fought game to the end. Chipola was leading by 9 with 6 minutes left in the game, but OWC cut the lead to 3 at the 3:30 mark of the second half. The Indians started to rebuild the lead, but the Raiders again came back and cut the margin to 4 by hitting a 3-point play with 2:40 left in the game.

Defense and free throw shooting paid off down the stretch, though, with Chipola blocking a key OWC shot and hitting a spree of free throws to post a final score of 89-78.

It is Chipola's fourth State Championship in men's basketball in the last 8 years. The Indians now have won State Championships in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008.

The win puts Chipola (32-1) on the road to Kansas for the JUCO National Tournament. Details on the Indians first round game will be announced soon, but the tournament begins on March 18th.

Bulldogs Ousted From State Tournament

By Clint Cox

The Marianna Bulldogs ran up against a jugger nault of a team in the FHSAA Class 3A Semi-Finals in Lakeland last week and fell 77-57. The game pitted the #1 team in the state in Pine Crest and the #2 team in the Bulldogs. Pine Crest jumped out to an early lead and then held a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Marianna opened up with a bucket from Brandon Gibson to start the second quarter and narrowed the gap to 17-13. That was as close as the Bulldogs would get as Pine Crest responded with 9-2 run over the next few minutes to take a 26-15 lead midway through the second quarter. As hard as they tried, Marianna just could not get going against the very talented squad from Fort Lauderdale. By halftime the Bulldogs trailed 36-22.
Pine Crest hit the first six points to start the second half to take a 42-22. Late in the third quarter Marianna made a run and with back to back buckets from T.J. Spencer the Bulldogs cut the lead back to 16. Trailed 59-45 as the final quarter began the Bulldogs saw Pine Crest outscore them 6-1 to push the lead back up to 19 points. From there Pine Crest went on to post the 20 point victory over the Bulldogs.
Marianna was led by Spencer and Josh Jones who each hit 12 points. Gibson followed with 9 points and C.J. Blount hit 8. Marianna finished the season with a record of 26-4. Head Coach Travis Blanton had nothing but praise for his squad and their opponent. "Our kids played hard but Pine Crest is very good. They may be the best team in the state, regardless of classifications. But we’ve had a good season and I think it is another step in the right direction for our program," Blanton said.

Troy Trojans & The Marianna Connection

By Clint Cox

Marianna baseball fans had the opportunity this past weekend to take in some Troy University baseball and see a steady dose of Marianna alumni leading the Trojans. Dothan was host to the ScreenTech Wiregrass Classic that in addition to Troy, featured Penn State, Wake Forest and Kennesaw State. Troy posted three wins in four games to improve to 8-1 on the season.

The Marianna connection begins with Head Coach for the Trojans, Bobby Pierce. As a 1977 graduate of Marianna, Pierce was a three sport athlete for the Bulldogs including being the starting quarterback on the 1975 & 76 football teams. But baseball is where he excelled the most, as evidenced by a solid college career in junior college and at Alabama. After several successful coaching stints, including a state championship at Chipola, he landed at Troy in 2003.
The Trojans have two former Bulldogs on their 2008 roster, including starting third baseman Trevor Tyre. After a four year stint as a Bulldog, Tyre played one season at Chipola. Last year as a sophomore at Troy he worked his way into the starting position at third base and hit .381 in 35 games. This year he is again starting at third and batting in the leadoff spot for the Trojans.

In this weekend’s action Tyre scored a couple of runs and had a hit in two of the three games in which he started, including a double against Wake Forest. Trevor is the son of Don and Marlean Tyre.
The third former Bulldog for the Trojans is Josh Storm. After his Bulldog days Storm played two seasons for the Chipola Indians and was on last year’s National Championship team. An excellent all around athlete, Storm both pitched and played a utility role at Chipola. At Troy he is concentrating on pitching and is primarily coming out of the bullpen at this time. During action this past weekend he picked up two saves, one against Penn State on Friday and another against Wake Forest on Saturday. Josh is the son of Rick Storm and Karla Sapp.

On the other side of the bracket, Okaloosa-Walton defeated Sante Fe by twelve points in an 82-70 over Sante Fe. They will play Broward in the other semi-final game on Friday.
