Lady Tigers Win Thriller In Sneads

By Clint Cox

The Graceville Tigers rallied for an exciting 55-51 win over the much improved Sneads Lady Pirates this past Tuesday night in girl’s high school basketball action. The contest featured an offensive dual between Graceville’s Mychea Williams and Lady Pirate La’Tilya Baker. Williams finished the night with 27 points while Baker pumped in 20 points for Sneads.

The first quarter was evenly matched as it ended with a 9-9 score. In the second quarter Sneads pulled ahead as Baker and Shan Gillette got the hot hand. The Lady Pirates led by as many as 7 points during the quarter but Graceville went on a late run that started with a rebound and put back by Taylor McDaniel. Williams then drained a long 3 pointer to pull Graceville within one point and then closed out the first half by stealing the ball and making a layup. That gave the Lady Tigers a 26-25 lead at the intermission.

The third quarter started with Sneads grabbing the lead on a bucket by Bridgett Dawson. But Graceville’s Brittany Flournoy fired right back to give the Lady Tigers the lead. Williams put Graceville up by 3 points but then Sneads went on a run. Baker and Gillette reeled off 8 unanswered points to give Sneads a 5 point lead. Sneads went up by as many as 7 points several times during the third quarter and went into the final quarter with a 46-39 lead. Graceville got a hot start to the fourth quarter while Sneads went cold. Graceville outscored Sneads 9-0 in the first four minutes of the final quarter and held a two point lead at 48-46. Baker tied the game up with a basket but Graceville’s Jessica McClendon scored to reclaim the lead for the Lady Tigers. With just under two minutes to play Gillette’s free throw for Sneads made it a two point game with Graceville leading 53-51. Sneads went scoreless the final two minutes while Graceville got a steal and a basket by Williams to seal the victory.

In addition to Williams 27 points for Graceville McClendon added 15 points. Sneads got a 14 point effort from Gillette to go along with Baker’s 20 points. Graceville will play host to Marianna on Thursday while Sneads will next play at Cottondale on Friday.
