Bullpups Win Two

By Clint Cox
The Marianna Bullpups have gotten off to another fine start this season, winning both of their first two outings. Last Thursday night the Bullpups traveled to Monticello and posted a win over Jefferson County by a score of 28-12. The Bullpups were led by a trio of backs, starting with Derrick Knowles who rushed for over 100 yards and had a TD. Shaundre McAroy rushed for over 90 yards with a score and Jock Wooden had just under 90 yards with two TDs.
On Tuesday night they played host to Roulhac Middle School out of Chipley and came away with a 32-16 win. Wooden had a big night as he rushed for three scores, including a long run in the first quarter to put the Bullpups up 6-0. After a two point conversion the Bullpups got another score as Knowles scooped up a loose ball that was fumbled by a teammate. Knowles then raced into the end zone to put Marianna up 14-0. The Bullpups took a 16-0 lead after the two point conversion. Marianna posted another score late in the second quarter when Wooden bulled his way into the end zone from 8 yards out. Knowles added the two point run and the Bullpups took a 24-0 lead at the half.
The second half began with Marianna marching down the field and getting a 4 yard scoring run from Wooten. Shaundre McElroy added the two point run to make it 32-0. Roulhac managed a couple of late scores but the Bullpups went on to the 16 point victory. Marianna will next be in action on Tuesday when they host Havana at 5 pm.

Ashley Smith tallied 8 kills, while Kara Alford had 7 kills. Jordan Jackson and Sierra Hewett each had 4 kills on the night. Bridgett Dawson played great defense with 5 digs. In ace serves, Meagan Smith again led with 6 aces, while Ashley Smith and Bridgett Dawson both came in with 5 ace serves. Jordan Jackson led in blocks with 3 for the night. Caitlin McCaffrey and Emily Jones also checked in for the Lady Pirates and contributed to Sneads’ outstanding serve receiving and defense for the night. This win brought the Lady Pirates to 6-0 overall, 4-0 in the regular season, and 3-0 in district competition.
The Lady Pirates then competed in the 2009 Panhandle Fall Volleyball Classic at Mosley High School this weekend. The Pirates won their pool defeating Bay High School 25-10 and 25-6. Next the girls faced Port St. Joe and beat them 25-15 and 25-19. Winning their pool placed them in the Gold division for the playoffs portion of the tournament. In first round action, Sneads faced 4A volleyball powerhouse Gulf Breeze. After a hard fought first game, the Lady Pirates lost their momentum in the second game to fall to Gulf Breeze 19-25, 13-25. Loosing to Gulf Breeze put Sneads in the match for third place against another 4A high school, Navarre. In a very exciting match, Sneads upset Navarre to win 25-22, and 29-27. The Lady Pirates earned the third place spot out of 12 teams, finished the day at 3-1, and improved their overall record to 9-1. Meagan Smith was voted by opponent coaches as the tournament MVP for Sneads.
Sneads followed that tournament up by improving to 8-1 on the regular season and 10-1 overall with their win against Cottondale in District competition Monday night. Scores were 25-13, 25-11, 25-16. Leading in kills for Sneads was Meagan Smith with 12, Ashley Smith and Kara Alford each with 5 kills a piece. In Ace serves it was Kara Alford’s jump serve that racked up 6 unanswered serves, while Ashley Smith had five ace serves of her own. Ashley Smith was the team leader in digs with 5, while Bridgett Dawson came in with four digs. Tiffany Guerra earned 24 assists for the night.
The Sneads Lady Pirates J.V volleyball team got the fire started when they scorched Cottondale in two straight matches to end the game quickly! The first match slipped through Cottondale’s hands like sand while they were defeated 25-17. In the second match Cottondale was getting fired up but they were still easily defeated 25-21. Leading the Lady Pirates was Brandy Strickland with 6 aces ,1 kill and 1 assist, next was Ashley Rogers with 4 aces and 3 kills, up next was Christen Howell with 4 aces. Alyssa Edwards was on the board with 2 kills, Shannon McCaffry had 2 aces, 1 kill and 1 assist, Blaire Edenfield had 1 ace and three dig attempts, Becca Aaron had 1 kill and 3 assists, to finish it off Jenna Sneads had 1 kill. The J.V played a great game and was determined to keep up what looks like an awesome season. The Lady Pirates J.V was like wildfires spreading straight into the Varsity to get their fire started!

2009 Graceville Lady Tigers Varsity Profile

District: Class 2A District Two – Graceville, Blountstown, Bozeman, Cottondale, Holmes County, Sneads, South Walton and Vernon. District Tournament to be played at Blountstown High School on 10/26-30, 2009.
2009 Outlook: The Lady Tigers are in just their second year of having a volleyball program after a 16 year absence of the program at Graceville. Prior to last year, the last time Graceville had a varsity volleyball program was in 1982. Bob Bloomer enters his second season as the Head Coach and has seven players returning from last year’s squad. After a 16 year layoff from having a volleyball program, Bloomer knows that his squad is still in the rebuilding mode. Add to that challenge the fact that the Lady Tigers have the scheduling challenge of having to play their first six matches on the road. But they’ll close out the regular season and head into district tournament play with four straight home contests. So hopefully they can build some momentum and begin peaking at the right time of the season.

CHIPOLA COLLEGE BASKETBALL TEAM RELOADS FOR 2009

Jake Headrick’s first three months at the helm of the Indians’ basketball program has been a roller coaster ride. Upon accepting the position, Headrick had the grueling task of signing a completely new team with only two months before the start of school.
Nevertheless, Headrick was able to snag one of the top recruiting freshmen classes in the country.
"We are a very young team this year. But with a young team, we are able to instill in them our basketball philosophy," said coach Headrick.
Chipola will have a new look offensively this year as several of the guards will be able to play both at the point and shooting guard position. John Taylor (6-0) from Chicago, IL, Sam Grooms (6-1) from Greensboro, NC, Roderick Lanon (5-10) from Louisville, KY, Lashay Page (6-2) from Dillon, SC, Dexter Ellington (6-1) from Culthbert, GA, and Daniel Cummins (6-2) from Charlotte, NC are slated to play the guard positions this year.
On the wing, the Indians will look towards several versatile individuals to help lead the Indians to a record-setting seventh consecutive Panhandle Conference crown, including Delwan Graham (6-5) transfer from L.S.U., Steadman Short (6-9) transfer from High Point University, Kevin Powell (6-6) from Fayetteville, NC, and Marvin Fitzgerald (6-5) from Milwaukee, WI.
In the paint, Headrick is hoping that the young blood of Chadrack Lufile (6-10) from Burlington, Canada and Aaron Davis (6-7) from Huntsville, AL will contribute at a high level for the Indians this season.
The new members of the Chipola Men’s Basketball program will definitely look to write their own chapter in the vast history of Chipola tradition.

Blountstown battled back and tied the game at 9-9 and then took the lead at 13-12. The Lady Tigers led 15-13 and then pushed to lead to 18-15. Meagan Smith came up with a kill and Tiffany Guerra served up a couple of points to tie the game at 19-19. Blountstown pushed their lead back up to three points after a long grueling point. Trailing 22-19 Sneads battled back with a kill by Kara Alford and got a couple of service points from Ashley Smith. Meagan Smith then tapped over a shot and the game was tied at 23-23. The game was then tied again at 24-24 and 25-25. Blountstown took the final two points to claim a 27-25 win.
Game two went the way of Sneads early on as they took a 9-1 lead. Blountstown battled back to make it 9-6. Sneads responded with two points as Bridgette Dawson served but once again the Lady Tigers fought back to make it 11-9. Sneads got hot with Tiffany Guerra serving and pushed their lead to 16-10. Meagan Smith the got back to back kills to make it a 20-13 lead. Ashley Smith served up an ace and then recorded a kill to help Sneads to a 24-17 lead. Kara Alford tapped one over for the final point and a Lady Pirate 25-18 victory. Game Three again saw Sneads jump out to an early 5-1 lead but Blountstown rallied to tie the game. Sneads went back up 11-6, only to see the Lady Tigers rally to tie the game at 15-15. Meagan Smith got a couple of late kills and Dawson served up a couple of points to take the lead but it was not enough as Blountstown rallied to tie the game at 23-23 and then captured a 25-23 win to lead 2-1.
Game Four was nip and tuck early on and then Blountstown surged to a 7-3 lead. Sneads kept battling and stayed close, in part on 3 points served up by Dawson. But Blountstown maintained a 3 to 4 point lead until the Lady Pirates finally made their run. Trailing 16-14 Ashley Smith went to the service line and reeled off 10 straight services points, including several aces. When the smoke from Smith’s serving arm cleared, Sneads led 24-16. They went on to a 25-18 win to tie the match at 2-2. The fifth and final game was all Sneads as Meagan Smith recorded 3 early kills. Dawson made a couple of nice digs and Ashley Smith had a tap over and a kill to lead the Lady Pirates to a 15-9 win and a 3-2 match victory. The district win over Blountstown improved the Lady Pirates regular season record to 3-0 and they will host Vernon on Thursday in another district contest.
