SNEADS – The Sneads Pirates snapped a three game losing streak with a 19-14 win over the visiting Yellow Jackets of Vernon. Mark Lawson had a big night for the Pirates as he rushed for 224 yards on 35 carries and scored two touchdowns. The win according to Head Coach Don Dowling was just what the doctor ordered. "If ever a program needed a win we needed this win. It was a great win for our program," said Dowling.
The Pirates jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter after Vernon had a miscue on a punt and Sneads got the ball on the Yellow Jacket 14 yard line. Lawson scored two plays later to give the Pirates the early 6-0 lead. Another Vernon miscue on another punt in the second quarter once again gave the Pirates great field position at the Vernon 30 yard line. Lawson once again did the damage on a 15 yard scoring run midway through the second quarter. The Pirates added more points to the scoreboard just before the first half ended as Anthony Dawkins hauled in a 23 yard pass from freshman quarterback John Locke. An extra point kick by Billy Knight gave Sneads a 19-0 lead at the half.
Vernon did not roll over though and battled back in the second half with two touchdowns. Trailing 19-14 they had two possessions late in the game but the Pirate’s defense held and preserved the lead. Lawson picked off a Yellow Jacket pass to end the game. The Pirate defense was led by Delvin Oliver with 9 tackles while Knight and Jamar White each recorded 8 tackles. The much needed win improved the Pirates record to 2-4 and they will travel to Gulf County on Friday night to take on Wewahitchka in another district contest.
