COTTONDALE – The Cottondale Hornets got a stellar performance from Marcus Humose as they beat county rival Graceville 70-57 last Friday night. Humose led all scorers with 25 points. Graceville took the early lead after a shot at the buzz to end the first quarter put the Tigers up 13-11. But from there the Hornets began to take control as Drew Bellamy was wreeking havoc on the boards. A rebound and put back by Bellamy allowed Cottondale to cap a 10-0 run to start the second quarter and take a 21-13 lead. Midway through the second quarter the Hornets had outscored the Tigers 14-1. But a Tiger rally reeled off 5 straight points to make it a 25-19 game. Cottondale answered with 7 unanswered points to take a 32-19 half time lead.
The third quarter was all Cottondale as they outscored the Tigers 16-11 and held a 48-30 lead going into the final quarter. Graceville made a run at the Hornets, cutting the lead to as few as 6. But the Hornets would catch fire again and pull away to a double digit lead. Graceville cut it to a 9 point game with a minute to play but the Hornets hit some key free throws down the stretch to secure the 13 point victory.
In addition to Humose, Cottondale got 10 points from Jacob Herring. Bellamy and Cody Saye each contributed 9 points to the Hornet’s winning cause. Graceville was led by Craig Myrick with 18 and C.J. Dozier with 13.
