COTTONDALE – The Cottondale Hornets captured the girls varsity contest and the boys JV contest on Tuesday night. The Malone boys foiled the Hornet sweep by winning the night cap game.
The first game of the evening saw the Cottondale girls varsity squad post a 38-31 victory over the Lady Tigers. Shaunte Forward led the Lady Hornets with 16 points and Vanessa Olds led Malone with 13 points.
In game two the JV boys squads squared off and Cottondale hung on for an exciting 43-39 win. Jacquese Walker led the Hornets with 11 points, Clifford Canty followed with 11 and Darius Pollock added 8. Shaquille McDole led the Tigers with 14 points and Chai Baker chipped in 12 points.
The Malone boys varsity squad picked up their second win of the week with a 52-45 win over the Hornets. The Tigers took an early 11-9 lead after the first quarter but Cottondale battleed back and led 22-19 at the half. In the third quarter Malone reclaimed the lead as T.J. Smith and Mike McArthur hit back to back three pointers. Ladarius McElroy knocked down a three pointer and then Aaron Conrad banked in shot at the buzzer to give Malone a 37-33 lead at the end of the third quarter. Malone then outscored Cottondale 5-0 in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter and went on to post the 7 point victory.
Malone was led by Smith with 13 points, McElroy added 12 and Michael Peak followed with 10 points. Marcus Humose had 16 points to lead Cottondale and Drew Bellamy followed with 14 points.
