Chipola Softball On A Roll; Marianna’s Hewett Named FCCAA Player of the Week

The Chipola Lady Indians softball squad continues to be on a roll as they went 6-1 this past weekend in the Aiken Mizuno Invitational in Aiken South Carolina. The Lady Indians advanced all the way through the tournament to the Championship game on Sunday before falling 5-3 to Middle Georgia. For the tournament they put up some impressive numbers, outscoring their opponents 63-14 and hitting .409 as a team. They also racked up 12 doubles and stroked 5 home runs. Those wins improved the Lady Indians overall record to 17-4 overall and they had run off 16 straight wins before falling to Middle Georgia. The Lady Indians are ranked #2 in the state and they’ll see plenty of more action this weekend down in Panama City. On Friday they’ll take on Chattanooga State (2 games) and SE Community College. On Saturday they’ll square off against St. Pete, Hillsborough and Wallace-Hanceville.

In game one last Saturday they down Gordon 1-02 as Brittany Black was the winning pitcher going five runs and giving up one earned run. Game two saw the Lady Indians whip Stanly 9-1 as they pounded out 15 hits in the win. Skylar Davis was the winning pitcher throwing four innings and giving up no hits. The final outing on Saturday saw them rack up 13 hits in a 8-0 win over Walters State. Trish Bliss had two 2 run home runs in the win and Emma Stevenson picked up the win as she allowed 2 hits and struck out 9 batters in five innings of work.

Michelle Hewett is this week’s FCCAA Softball Player of the Week. Hewett, a sophomore center-fielder from Marianna, batted .727 (16-for-22) with ten runs scored, nine RBI’s and ten stolen bases over seven games. She batted safely in all seven games, recording six multi-hit games and five three-hit outings.       She also scored at least one run in six of the seven games and was a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen base attempts. Her top performance came against Stanly on Feb. 20 when she went 3-for-3
with three runs scored and three stolen bases.
