Three Jackson County basketballs squads found the going rough last week during the FHSAA Playoffs. The Cottondale Lady Hornets had made the trip to Lakeland for the Final Four but fell in the Semi-Finals 48-25 to First Academy. Cottondale struggled early on and trailed 14-4 at the end of the first quarter. By halftime they trailed 32-14 as they just could not seem to get going offensively. They actually played even basketball in the second half as both squads posted 16 second half points. Cottondale was led on the day by Shaunte Forward with 8 points and Khadejah Ward with 6 points. The Lady Hornets finished the season with an impressive 21-6 record under first year Head Coach Laura Holman.
In boy’s basketball both Graceville and Cottondale fell in their respective Regional Finals. The Graceville Tigers traveled to Gainesville to take on The Rock. With no starters under 6’2" and a front line of 6’10" and 6’8" The Rock was too much for the Tigers and posted a 54-21 win. Graceville was led by Chris Works and Bryon Laster with 6 points each. The Tigers, who closed the season with a 4-1 run, finished the season 16-12.
The Cottondale Hornets traveled to Eastpoint to take on Franklin County, the new school that resulted from the consolidation of Apalachicola and Carrabelle. The Seahawks prevailed in a 49-39 victory. Cottondale fell behind early 9-2 and from there tried to play catch up all game long. Jacob Herring led the way with 11 points as Cottondale finished the season 19-11.
