The five varsity softball programs in the county began their respective district tournaments this week. In Class 1A the Malone Lady Tigers had to travel to Aucillia to take part in their district tournament. They took on the John Paul Catholic Monday night and posted a 22-12 win over the Lady Panthers. The Lady Tigers were led on offense by Cara McCormic who went 4-for-6 with seven RBI and Sara Newsom who went 3-for-3 with five RBI and four runs scored. Malone then had to square off against powerhouse Aucillia Christian on Tuesday night and fell 15-0 to the Lady Warriors. The Lady Tigers finished the season with a 8-12 record and under Head Coach Greg Ford continue to make steady progress. Two seasons ago the team failed to win a game and last year they won five games. The eight wins is the most for the girl’s fast pitch softball program at Malone.
In Class 2A action three county schools are taking part in the District Two tournament in Blountstown which began on Monday. The Sneads Lady Pirates enter the tournament as the #2 seed and took on Holmes County and posted an 11-1 victory. With that win Sneads advances to the semi-final round on Thursday night. The Lady Hornets of Cottondale had the tough task of squaring off against the #1 seed in the Lady Seahawks of South Walton. Cottondale fell to South Walton by a score of 11-0 to conclude their season. On Tuesday night the Graceville Lady Tigers were scheduled to play Bozeman however rain forced that contest to be rescheduled to Wednesday. Results of the Wednesday contest were not available at press time.
The Class 3A District One tournament features the Marianna Lady Bulldogs as the #1 seed entering the tournament. Action had been scheduled to begin on Monday night however rain has postponed both Monday and Tuesday night’s games. The Lady Bulldogs drew a bye and will play on Thursday night against the winner of Wednesday night’s matchup between Pensacola Catholic and Bay.
