The Chipola Lady Indians softball squad split in their last outing against Gulf Coast last Thursday. Although they dropped one to the Lady Commodores, the Lady Indians remain in first place of the Panhandle Conference with a two game lead over second place Northwest Florida State College.
Game one of the double header against Gulf Coast saw the Lady Indians fall behind early as the Lady Commodores led 4-0 after four innings of play. Chipola mustered a rally with a run in each of their at bats in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. But Gulf Coast also plated runs in the fifth and sixth innings and held on for a 6-3 win. Chipola out hit Gulf Coast 10-8 but committed three errors that didn’t help their cause. Nikki Roddy was 2-4 with a RBI and Michelle Hewett was 2-3 with a RBI to lead the offense. Emma Stevenson took the loss for the Indians, just her third loss of the season against 18 wins.
The night capper went the way of Chipola as they posted a 7-5 win. The Lady Indians plated 3 runs in the second inning, 2 more in the third and another in the fourth. Trailing 6-0 the Lady Commodores mounted an attack and pulled to within three runs before Chipola added another run in the sixth inning to seal the win. Brittany Black picked up the win, improving to 12-5 on the season. Ariell Van Hook led the way on offense, going 2-4 with 2 RBI. Andrea Sullivan was 2-3 with a RBI and one run scored.
Chipola is now 8-2 in conference play and 36-11 overall. They were back in action on Wednesday with a double header at home against Pensacola. Results of those contests were not available at press time. On Saturday they will host Tallahassee for a double header starting at 1 pm.
