Lady Bulldogs Rally For Win Over Cottondale

By Clint Cox

The last time Marianna and Cottondale meet on the softball field the Lady Bulldogs posted a big win in five innings. While the final score, 19-8, from Monday night’s contest in Cottondale looked like another lopsided win, the Lady Hornets had Marianna on the ropes but could not hang on as the Lady Bulldogs plated 15 runs in their last two at bats.

Jennifer Hewett gave Cottondale an early 3-2 lead with a home run that also scored Valarie D’Ambrosio and Chelsea Caudill. In the third inning Cottondale got a lead off single by Haley Boggs. Mary Auger doubled to score Boggs and then Aulettia Russ stroked a RBI single to score Auger. Russ later scored as Cottondale took a 6-2 lead after three innings. Marianna chipped away at the lead in the fourth inning as Hali Stout reached on an error and Cayce Griffin walked. Stout scored on a fielder’s choice and Griffin scored on a past ball to make it a 6-3 game. Cottondale responded in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs as Hewett’s RBI triple scored a run and then Hewett came home on a throwing error.

Going into the top of the fifth inning Marianna trailed 8-4 and needed some kind of spark if they were going to rally. That spark came on a lead off solo home run by Mallory Dean over the left field fence. Dean has been on a tear as of late with a walk off home run against Pensacola Catholic last Friday night that gave Marianna a 4-3 district win. After Stout singled and later scored to make it a 8-6 game Marianna managed to load the bases. Cottondale changed pitchers but a walk scored a Lady Bulldog to pull Marianna to within one run. The big blow of the game for Marianna came on a 3 RBI double by Jennifer Cramer to put the Lady Bulldogs up 10-8.

Offensively Cottondale had some chances but could not cash in during the fifth inning. Marianna blew the game open in the sixth inning with a 3 RBI triple by Haden Searcy. Allison Hutton stroked a RBI single to score Searcy and after Marianna loaded the bases again Mia Boykin’s 3 RBI double sealed the win.

With the win Marianna improved to 14-2 on the season and will host district opponent Arnold on Thursday night at 6:30 pm. The Lady Bulldogs will enter that contest 9-1 in district play. Cottondale was scheduled to take on Graceville Tuesday night but results of that game were not available at press time.
