Lady Indians Win Season Opener; Chipola To Host Milton H. Johnson Classic

The No. 3 Chipola Lady Indians, ranked #3 in the nation and #2 in the state, tipped off their 2009-2010 regular season on the road Monday in Jacksonville. The Lady Indians posted a 84-75 win over Florida Community College @ Jacksonville. Lindsey Carr led the way with 18 points, followed by Bianca Jarrett with 17, Jasmine Shaw with 16 and Malesha Peterson with 13. The game went back and forth in the early stages before Chipola went up by 9 points. The Lady Indians led 34-28 at the half. In the second half Chipola briefly gave up the lead but reclaimed it moments later. They were able to push the lead to as many as 12 points before closing out the game with a 9 point victory. The Lady Indians were 28-42 from the free throw line. The Lady Indians, under the direction of Head Coach David Lane in his 6th year, finished last year with a record of 30-6 season. They captured a state championship and finished in third-place at the national tournament.

This weekend both the women’s and men’s squads from Chipola will be in action at home as they play host to the Milton H. Johnson Classic. Action begins on Friday at 3 pm as the Gulf Coast Lady Commodores will take on #14 Monroe. At 5pm the Chipola Ladies take on a squad out of Mobile called North American Basketball Association. At 7 pm the Chipola Men square off against L.B Wallace. On Saturday the Chipola squads are back in action as the men take on Mississippi Elite at 3 pm and ladies take on Monroe at 5 pm.
