Lady Bulldogs Hammer Cottondale

The Marianna Lady Bulldogs softball squad used a big second inning to pound out a 16-1 win over the visiting Lady Hornets of Cottondale on Monday night. The Lady Hornets struck first however as Valarie D’Ambrosio came home to score on a Lady Bulldog error when Samantha Brainerd put the ball in play. Marianna countered in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second inning Marianna exploded for 7 runs as Mallory Dean got things going with a RBI single to score Maya Boykin. The Lady Bulldogs managed to load the bases before Allison Hutton’s RBI single score Hali Stout to make it a 3-1 game. Jennifer Cramer followed with a RBI single and then Dean came home on a throwing error to push the lead to 5-1. Whitney Lipford’s hit brought home Hutton and a sacrifice fly from Lindsey Basford scored Cramer to put Marianna up 7-1. The final run of the inning came when Boykin racked up a RBI single to score Lipford and give Marianna an 8-1 lead going into the top of the third inning. After holding Cottondale scoreless Marianna plated five more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 13-1 lead.

In the final at bat for Marianna in the fourth inning Marianna loaded up the bases with Lady Bulldogs and Lipford’s grounder could not be fielded by Cottondale. Hutton and Cramer scored and Lipford made it all the way to second base. A Cottondale error on a ground ball from Boykin allowed Lipford to score and gave the Lady Bulldogs a 15 run lead. Hutton, who went the distance for Marianna in the pitcher’s circle, closed out the game in the top of the fifth. She struck out six batters on the night and allowed just one hit.

The win improved the Lady Bulldogs to 7-1 on the season and they were back in action on Tuesday night in Panama City against Arnold. Results of that contest were not available at press time. They will next be in action on Friday when they travel to Pensacola to take on Pensacola Catholic. The Lady Hornets will be back in action on Friday as well when they play host to Bay.
