On paper the Sneads Lady Pirates softball squad’s 17-5 win over Graceville last Thursday night would appear to have been a lopsided affair. That couldn’t be any further from the reality. For five innings the game was a tightly contested matchup. Twice Graceville got the bases loaded and had a chance to take the lead and momentum. But twice they failed and Sneads then exploded in the sixth inning to pull away for the 12 run district victory. “We were really fortunate to get this win,” commented Sneads Head Coach Kelvin Johnson. “The final score certainly doesn’t tell the real story about this game,” Johnson added.
Sneads struck quickly in the top of the first inning as Ashlen Wilson and Karrisa Childs both scored to give the Lady Pirates a 2-0. Graceville came right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs to tie the game as Kelley Leuenberger and Liza Johnson both scored. Tiffany Guerra gave the Lady Pirates a 3-2 lead in the second inning as she scored and then Sneads made it 4-2 with a run from Jolie Johnson who scored on a past ball in the third inning.
Over the next three at bats Graceville had no trouble getting base runners. The problem they had was getting those base runners across the plate. They stranded two runners in the third inning. In the fourth inning they managed a run when Liza Johnson tripled and then scored on an RBI single from Taylor McDaniel. Shaquelle Johnson doubled and Graceville had the bases loaded with no outs. But Sneads pitcher Alisha Edenfield managed to get two strikeouts and a pop up to get Sneads out of the jam. In the fifth inning Graceville, trailing 4-3, again managed to load the bases with no outs. This time Edenfield was pulled and Childs came in to pitch for the Lady Pirates. Childs got two strikeouts and a groundout to preserve the Sneads one run lead.
In the top of the sixth the Sneads brought out the heavy artillery and when the smoke cleared, they had racked up 8 runs to take a 12-3. Childs had a 2 RBI double to score Wilson and Edenfield. A pair of Kaylas then did the damage as Kayla Rabon and Kayla Kelley both stroked two run homers. Graceville plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth as Jenna Martin singled and scored on a triple by Leuenberger. A Lady Pirate error on a ground ball allowed Leuenberger to score and make it a 12-5 game. But Sneads piled it on in the seventh as they got an RBI double from Rabon and RBI singles from Kelley, Deanne Berry and London Chason.
