The Marianna and Graceville High School Girls and Boys Track and Field Teams competed against 13 other Panhandle school teams February 27, 2010 at Bay High School’s Panhandle Open. The meet was hosted at Tommy Oliver Stadium in Panama City under cold and breezy conditions. The threat of rain never materialized but conditions were cold for both runners and observers alike. Both squads showed a good mix of several new comers competing for the first time in a larger meet and a group of veterans that look to shine in their senior year.
The Marianna girls who make up the 4 x 100 meter relay team came away Saturday with an impressive 1st place finish and several other individual metals. The girl’s 1st place relay team includes: Treshee Patterson, Derrika Fitzpatrick, Christina Wynn, and Sharee Williams. Tia Bass’s 86 foot discus throw was good enough to give her 4th place in the event, Andreal Johnson and Derrika Fitzpatrick also competed in this event. Sharee Williams placed 5th in the 200 meter dash. Christina Wynn got 3rd in the long jump with a jump of 15’ 5.5” and Treshae Patterson had a jump of 14’ 3.5” for 7th. Christina Wynn also took 3rd in the triple jump scoring a jump of 33 feet. The Marianna Girls Team scored well enough to place a respectable 8th in the overall competition Saturday.
The Graceville Girls also fared well as some of their top finishers included Mychea Williams finishing second in the 100 meter dash. Jessica McClendon brought home first place in the shot put with a toss of 33.07. In the 4x100 Meter Relay the Lady Tigers took 5th. In the girls long jump Brittany Smith came in 8th while Jalisa McSwain finished 9th; In the triple jump it was Trineity Boston coming in 9th. Overall the Lady Tigers finished in 9th place.
On the boys side of the street Graceville had several Tigers stand out. Chris Works finished 8th in the 100 meter dash and Leander Ford finished 3rd in the discuss throw. Kevin Potts came in 4th in the 400 meter dash. The Tigers 4x100 team also finished second. Overall the Graceville boys finished 6th.
For the Marianna boys James Lien finished 6th in the Pole Vault while and Dalton Hendrix finished 8th. Overall the Marianna boys finished 13th. Several Bulldogs were in the top 25 of the 1600 meter run including Joseph Gibson, Jesse McGowan, Zach Brockner and Patrick Cox. The sprinters for the track squad will most definitely pick up steam in the next few meets as many just started practice this week after having just come off the hardwood floors from basketball playoffs.
