The Marianna Bulldogs improved to 9-1 on the season with a 9-2 win over the Rebels of Coosa Valley High School. The Rebels are coached by Marianna alumni and former standout football and baseball player Bobby Hughes. Coosa Valley High is located in Harpersville, Alabama which is southeast of Birmingham.
It was a close contest through the first three innings. Innings one and two were scoreless for both teams and the Rebels took the lead in the third inning when they scored on a Bulldog balk. But in the fourth inning the Bulldogs got some offense going. Austin Branch and Colby Johnson reached on walks and then scored on a ground ball by Clayte Rooks that was mishandled at second base. Rooks later came home to score on a sacrifice fly from Jaren Bannerman. Leading 3-1 the Bulldogs added four more runs in the fifth inning as Dustin O’Hearn led off the inning with a triple. Brandon Burch was hit by a pitch and then a 2 RBI triple by Johnson scored O’Hearn and Burch to make it 5-1. Johnson scored when Branch reached base on an error. Branch didn’t stay on base long as Rooks stroked a RBI triple to bring Branch home. Rooks scored on a past ball and Marianna led 7-1. Marianna plated two more runs in the sixth inning as two Bulldog base runners scored when Rooks fly ball to left field went off the glove of the Rebel’s left fielder.
