The Marianna Bulldogs and Cottondale Hornets opened the regular season on Tuesday night at the ‘Dog House. Marianna used a big third quarter to get a lead and then hung on for a 59-51 win. Kruize Pinkins led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points and Tre Jackson chipped in 13. Cottondale was led on the evening by Marcus Humose with 14 points.
Cottondale took an early lead as Jehron Clemmons put back a rebound for two points and gave the Hornets a 6-2 lead. Marianna battled back and took an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs pushed their lead to as many as five points in the second quarter but Darien Pollock and Humose got the Hornets back in business. Back to back buckets by Pollock and a basket by Humose gave the Hornets a 23-22 halftime lead.
The third quarter belonged to the Bulldogs as they came out smoking. After a Hornet basket by Drew Bellamy Marianna went on a run that was capped off by a 3 pointer from Jackson to chalk up 10 unanswered points by the Bulldogs. The third quarter came to a close with Tre Long nailing a 3 pointer to give Marianna a 40-27 lead going into the final quarter. The Hornets didn’t quit though and they made a run at the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter. Humose hit a couple of 3 pointers and Bellamy had a put back to cut the Bulldog lead to 6 points with just over a minute to play. But the Marianna’s Nehemiah Gilbert hit some key free throws down the stretch to help preserve the lead and seal the victory.
Marianna, 1-0, will next play on Tuesday night when they travel to Bay High. Cottondale, 0-1, will take on another Jackson County rival on Friday night when they play host to the Malone Tigers. In Junior Varsity action the Bulldogs won 44-33. Emanuel Batson led the Bulldogs with 21 points and Chris Bowers added 13. Cottondale was led by Clifford Canty with 8 points.
