The Sneads Pirates did something last Friday night that they had not done all season long, win on the road. In Panama City the Pirates picked up a 38-30 district win over the Bozeman Bucks. While the road win was something new for the Pirates, their workhorse was the familiar Mark Lawson. The Senior rushed for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns to pace the Pirates. He also picked off a pass and returned it for a score as well. Jeff Davis added 82 yards on the ground and a score.
Lawson scored two first quarter touchdowns to get the Pirates out to a quick lead. His 10 yard TD run capped a 75 yard drive and then he ripped off a 53 yard scoring run to put the Pirates up 12-0. Sneads scored late in the first quarter on a 70 yard scoring toss from Terrence Green to Anthony Dawkins to take a 18-0 lead into the second quarter. Bozeman countered with two scores in the second quarter to cut the lead to 18-14. But Sneads found the end zone again with only 22 seconds left in the half when Davis scored on a 14 yard run. Sneads led 24-14 at the half.
Bozeman came out in the second half and put a score on the board with a 33 yard field goal to make it a 24-17 game. Lawson responded with another rushing touchdown of two yards and then added the 2 point run to push the Pirate lead to 32-17. As the game moved into the fourth quarter Bozeman mounted a rally with two touchdowns to narrow the Pirate’s lead to 32-30. But on the final play of the game Lawson picked off a Bucks pass and returned it 56 yards for a score to seal the victory.
With the win Sneads improved to 5-4 on the season and will play host to Marianna on Friday night for the regular season finale. The Pirates have accepted an invitation to play in the Suwannee Bowl in Branford next Thursday night (11/19/09). They’ll take on Branford High which is coach by former Jackson Countian Bill Wyles.
