The Marianna Bulldog wrestling squad sent five wrestlers to the Regional competition this past weekend in Green Cove Springs at Clay High School. Angel Candalaria (119), Blaine Hansford (130), Mike Sawyer (140) Dalton Hendrix (160) and Dylan Reed (189) all finished in the top four of their respective weight classes at the District Tournament held February 6th at Arnold High School in Panama City.
At the Regional Tournament Candalaria, who finished second in the district tournament, won his opening match with a 10-9 win. He fell in round two by pin but bounced back with a pin of his own in round three over his opponent from Baker County. His final match was a loss to Jonathan Bish from Bishop Kenny by pin. Hansford finished fourth in the district tournament but fell in his first two matches at the Regional Tournament to opponents from Clay and Wakulla. Sawyer also finished fourth in the district and also found the going rough at the Regional Tournament falling in his first two rounds.
Hendrix finished 3rd in the district and opened up the regionals with a pin over his opponent from Suwannee. In a close second round match he fell 10-7 to his opponent from Clay. He bounced back though with a pin in round three and then squared off against one of his district foes, Tyler Bragg from Arnold. Hendrix fought hard but the Marlin wrestler managed a pin to win the match. Reed also finished 3rd in the district and also picked up an opening round win at the regionals with a pin over his opponent from Wakulla. Reed fell in round two to his opponent from Nease and then fell in round three to a wrestler from Providence.
The Bulldog wrestling squad is looking forward to a solid season next year as they graduate only two wrestlers from this year’s team. Four of the five wrestlers (Hansford, Sawyer, Hendrix and Reed) that advanced to the Regional Tournament will return.
