The Malone Tigers came out red hot and went on to post a 77-58 win over the visiting Cottondale Hornets last Thursday night. T.J. Smith led the way with 22 points, 14 of which came in the first quarter. Smith drilled four 3 pointers in the first quarter to help Malone take a 20-15 lead. Marcus Humose kept the Hornets close early on but Malone continued to pull away in the second quarter. Chai Baker knocked down a couple of 3 pointers for the Tigers as they took a 33-23 halftime lead. Humose hit 9 first half points but the Hornets struggled at the free throw line, making just 6-17 from the charity stripe.
Ty Baker hit back to back buckets to start the second half for Malone they pushed their lead to 12 points. But Humose rallied the Hornets with a bucket and a free throw with four minutes to play in the third quarter. That cut the Tiger lead down to 40-34. Malone then got hot again and went on a 16-4 run to close out the quarter. Ladarius McElroy, Jean Littles and Maciel Clemmons had the hot hands for the Tigers as they took a 56-38 lead into the final quarter. In that fourth quarter Malone put to rest any thoughts of a Hornet come back as they put on a dunking clinic much to the delight of the Tiger fans. Both Bakers and McElroy rattled the rims with thundering dunks in the final moments of the game to put an exclamation mark on the win over their county rival.
Behind Smith, McElroy and Littles each hit 13 points while Chai Baker added 10 points. Humose led the Hornets with 29 points and Trestin White chipped in 11 points.
