Friday Night Football Preview – 9/25/09

Walton Co. (1-1) at Marianna (2-1) at 7pm – The Bulldogs must shake off their loss to Bay last week and be ready for their district opener against the Braves. Marianna must also try to figure out a way to get out of the gates quicker, having started slowly in all three of their outings. Walton is a hard team to access. They lost their opener 22-20 to West Florida and then beat Sacremento (CA) 42-0 on the 11th. So they’ve had a week off to prepare for the Bulldogs. If the Bulldogs can shake off their slow start and get R.J. Bowers, Tre Jackson, Tre Long and Marjean Dean untracked early, they should be in a good position to get an important early season district win.

FAMU (0-2) at Cottondale (0-3) 7 pm – The good news is that the Hornets play their first home game of the 2009 season after 3 straight road games. The bad news is that powerhouse FAMU is the opponent. The Hornets have gotten off to a slow start but so have the Rattlers. FAMU has lost to Florida High and North Florida Christian. But not only have they lost, they have been shut out in both those losses. No doubt the Rattlers will try to get their offense cranked up against the Hornets. For Cottondale they will need their best game of the season if they hope to pull off the upset in both squad’s district debut.

Sneads (2-1) at Freeport (1-1) 7 pm – The Pirates hung on for an exciting 27-26 win over the Blue Devils of Holmes County this past Friday night. That improved their district record to 2-0 but things will get much tougher this week. The Bulldogs of Freeport lost their season opener to Milton but came back with an impressive win over Jay. They’ve got a running back that rushed for over 200 yards against the Royals and will be their main focus of the Pirate defense. The Pirate offense has their own fine running back in Mark Lawson, who has rushed for 294 yards in the last two outings.

Franklin Co. (2-1) at Graceville (0-2) The Tigers had last Friday night off and were preparing for their district opener against the John Paul II Catholic. But the Panthers have cancelled their football season and Graceville has replaced them for this week’s home game with the Seahawks of Franklin County. The Seahawks open the season with a loss to South Walton but have posted two straight wins (Cottondale and Rocky Bayou). Graceville’s mission is to cure their turnover bug as they have committed four turnovers in each of their first two outings. If they can do that, they have a great chance to get a much needed win.
