Marianna Cross Country Places Third; To Host Panhandle Championships

The Marianna Bulldog Cross Country team traveled to Panama City this past weekend and placed third in the Dolphin Dash. The meet, hosted by Mosley High School, featured all four Panama City schools as well as Marianna and Wewahitchka. Cross Country runs (5K) were held for boys and girls varsity, junior varsity and an open race. The Bulldogs, with 91 points, finished ahead of Rutherford, Wewahitchka and Bay. Arnold finished first with 43 points and Mosley was second with 47 points.

Marianna’s top finisher came on the girl’s side as Samantha Arroyo finished third overall with a time of 22:35. Other Lady Bulldogs competing included Tiffany Stephens (26:59) and Amber Roedel (30:24). On the boy’s side Jesse McGowan was the lead ‘Dog as he finished with a time of 19:17. Other boy’s varsity runners included Zack Brockner (20:04), Joseph Gibson (20:13), Patrick Cox (20:17), Robert Peacock (20:47), Mason Flowers (20:51) and Paul Kelson (20:56). Junior varsity runners included Cheston Goodman (22:02), Blaine Hansford (22:30) and Jeremy Wilson (24:34).

On Saturday the Marianna Cross Country team will host the 20th Annual Panhandle Cross Country Championships at Bulldog Stadium. Bulldog Head Coach Alan Gibson stated that over 30 schools and 600 runners have pre-registered for the big event. The boy’s varsity race will begin at 8:00 am and the girls varsity will follow at 8:30 am. After the girls varsity race there will be an open 5K race in which the general public is welcome to participate. The fee for participating in the open race is $5.00. The final race of the morning, around 10:00 am, will be an open 2 mile race geared for middle school cross country runners.
