Pups Rout Bears

By Clint Cox

The Havana Bears came calling on the Bullpups of Marianna on Tuesday night in middle school football action. The visitors ran into a buzzsaw as Marianna jumped out to an early lead and went on to post a big 50-0 win. With the impressive win the Bullpups improved to 3-0 on the season.

The Bullpups took advantage of two early miscues by the Bears, both of which came on bad snaps on punt attempts. Each snap was over the Bear’s punter’s head and was recovered by the Bullpups deep in Bear territory. Jock Wooden scored the first TD of the night on a 6 yard run. Wooden added the two point conversion run to make it a 8-0 game. The Bullpup defense forced another Bear punt later in the first quarter and again they recovered a high snap over the Bear’s punter. Shaundre McAroy did the damage this time, scoring on a 7 yard run. Wooden added the point after conversion run to give the Bullpups a 16-0 lead.

Wooden and McAroy had big nights for the Bullpups but with the big lead Marianna got numerous players into the scoring column. That included a 35 yard scoring pass from QB Jonathan Sikes to tight end Kyle Tanner. Backup QB Jessie Douglas scored on a 46 yard bootleg run.

The Bullpups will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Cottondale. The two county squads will play five quarters, with the younger players that don’t see regular action taking the field for that fifth quarter.
