The Chipola College Men’s Basketball Team hosted the second annual Accelerated Reading Kick-Off party for nearly 800 students from Golson Elementary Friday, October 23 at the Milton H. Johnson Health Center.
The event served as the springboard for Golson’s AR program in encouraging students to achieve their reading goals for the upcoming year.
Chipola Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach Joc Calloway welcomed the students to the college and introduced Chipola President, Dr. Gene Prough, who encouraged the students to look at reading as an adventure instead of a challenge.
Florida House of Representative for District 7, Marti Coley, impressed upon the students the opportunities that reading offers to them. Rep. Coley spoke of the ability to “travel to different countries or even the moon, without leaving one’s home” by reading books.
The nationally-ranked Chipola Indian Basketball team entertained the students through a slam dunk contest and a Globe-trotter style game.
Chipola Assistant Coach Joc Calloway said, “This event is one of the several ways our program gives back to the community each year. Through our partnership with Golson Elementary, our players are able to interact and promote education with area youngsters.
The special guest referees were well-known to the Golson family as Curriculum Specialist Janie Nolen and Sue Sue Miller masqueraded as game officials. By requiring the players wear silly outfits and read books to earn extra points for their squads, the officials helped to entertain the crowd.
Janie Nolen said, “We felt that this was an excellent way to promote reading and also show how our school works with Chipola College as partners in education.”
