The Lady Pirate JV volleyball team is made up of 7 freshmen and 7 sophomores. Since there aren’t many schools locally that have 9th grade teams, normally the girls share play time in each match they play. However, on Saturday Marianna hosted a tri match for 9th grade and 10th grade teams. Participating schools were Marianna, Sneads, and Cottondale. In 10th grade action, Sneads was defeated by Marianna in three games, but beat Cottondale in their next match. In the Marianna game, Christen Howell led the Pirates in kills with 7. Alyssa Edwards came in behind her with five kills. Yonna Bell tallied two ace serves, one kill, and one block. Emily Jones earned two ace serves two kills and one block. Shannon McCaffrey and Becca Aaron combined for 6 assists. McCaffrey also recorded a dig. Also for the Pirates, Kayla Smith checked in and did a great job offensively on the right side.
In Freshmen action, the Lady Pirates fell in both matches to Marianna. Although the young Lady Pirate squad did not come away with a win, Coach Roberts was still very pleased with their effort. They had more opportunities to practice many of the skills and strategies they work on regularly. In game one against Marianna, Sneads’ Brandy Strickland was able to connect her jump serve for five ace serves. Brandy also tallied one kill and one assist. In Game two, Brandy earned 3 kills and one ace serve. Blair Edenfield was able to earn one ace serve, and in game two was able to earn 4 service points. Ashley Rogers provided a spark to the Lady Pirates by handling some very tough serves by Marianna. In game one, Ashley earned two kills and two aces, and in game two, she picked up another ace serve. Setter, Alex Maphis, picked up three kills in game one and also earned an assist. Middle blocker, Jenna Sneads, did a good job in the middle with three kills in game one. Savanna Owens, also a middle blocker, has been working hard on her blocking technique and timing. Her hard work paid off as she tallied two block kills and one ace serve in game one. In game two Savanna was able to add another block kill to her stats. Shelby Laurence also checked in for the Lady Pirates and was able to handle some of those tough serves from Marianna! The Lady Pirates appreciate Marianna hosting this event and giving our younger players more of an opportunity to play!
