The Sneads Pirates scored 27 points this past Friday night and needed every one of them as they held off a Blue Devil comeback for a 27-26 win over Holmes County. Mark Lawson had another outstanding night as he rushed for 142 yards and racked up three rushing touchdowns.
The Pirates appeared to be in control of the game from the early stages. Lawson had touchdown runs of 53 yards and 29 yards in the first half. Terrance Green also had a 15 yard scoring run to give Sneads a commanding 20-7 lead at the half. But the Blue Devils did not lay down and quit. In fact they came out in the second half and got hot. They struck pay dirt in the third quarter with a 72 yard pass to cut the Pirate lead to 6 points. But the Pirates fired right back with Lawson’s third TD of the night on a 49 yard sprint to the end zone. Josh Rogers added the point after kick to give Sneads a 27-14 lead.
Holmes County though had found their rhythm and marched right down the field. As the game had moved into the fourth quarter the Blue Devils found the end zone on a 1 yard run by their quarterback. But the Pirate defense came up with an all important blocked extra point to hold a 7 point lead at 27-20. That turned out to be a key moment in the game, as the Blue Devils were not through scoring. With just under four minutes to play they added another score to make it 27-26. Rather than going for the tie, the Blue Devils decided to go for the two points and the lead. The Pirate defense, led by Lawson, came up with another big play and stopped the Blue Devils to preserve their slim lead. Holmes County got the ball back one more time but Pirate defender Terrence Pittman picked off a Blue Devil pass to seal the win for Sneads.
With the win Sneads improved to 2-1 on the season but more importantly 2-0 in district play. They will be on the road this week as they travel to Freeport to take on the Bulldogs in another district contest.
