The Sneads Pirates rallied for a thrilling 21-20 win over the visiting Jay Royals this past Friday night at Citizen’s Field. Sneads posted three scores in the second half for the come from behind win, which improved the Pirates to 3-2 overall but more importantly 3-1 in district play.
After a scoreless first quarter the second quarter appeared that it too would be scoreless. But Jay managed to toss a five yard scoring strike with just :36 left in the half. The point after kick was good and the Royals took a 7-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
The third quarter saw the Royals up their lead as they scored on a 1 yard run with 1 ½ minutes remaining in the quarter. The point after kick was good and Jay now held a 14-0 lead. But on the ensuing kickoff the Pirate’s Jeff Davis took the ball and returned it 87 yards for a score. Josh Rogers booted the extra point to narrow the Royal’s led to 14-7. As the game moved into the final quarter Jay tacked on another score, this time on an 11 yard run with just over nine minutes to play. On the extra point attempt the Royals came up empty and their lead stood at 20-7.
That is when Sneads went to work. Jimmy Roberts scooped up a loose ball and returned the fumble 55 yards for a score with just over 8 minutes to play. Rogers added the point after kick to make it a 20-14 game. And then late in the game, with just :33 seconds remaining, Mark Lawson hit Davis on a 33 yard pass for a touchdown. That tied the game at 20-20 and Rogers kicked the game winning extra point to make the final 21-20.
The Pirate defense was led by Jamar White with 14 tackles and 9 assists. Lawson had 11 tackles and 1 assist on the night. Sneads will have this week off as they prepare for another district matchup against the Vernon Yellow Jackets on Friday 10/16/09.
