Friday Night Football Preview – 10/2/09

Marianna (3-2) at Pensacola Catholic (4-1) at 7 pm – Marianna suffered a road loss at the hands of Liberty County last week and this weeks the road test will be even tougher. The Bulldogs will travel to Pensacola to take on the Crusaders of Pensacola Catholic in a district contest. The Crusaders started the season 4-0 with wins over larger schools like Choctaw, Gulf Breeze, Navarre and Crestview. Last week they fell to another large school, Pensacola Tate, by a score of 49-14. Marianna has had its difficulties against the Crusaders, falling in the last six outings with the last win being in 2001. The Bulldogs must eliminate costly penalties and turnovers if they have a hope of upsetting the Crusaders.

Jefferson County (2-3) at Cottondale (0-5) 7 pm – Tough times continue for the Hornets as they lost to Chipley 28-0 last Friday. Both squads had entered the contest without a win and it was the Tigers who ended their winless drought. The Hornets will face a Jefferson County squad that seems to be catching their wind. They opened the season with 3 losses (Chiles. Taylor Co. & Wewa) but have bounced back with two wins (Rocky Bayou & Bronson). But the Hornets are at home and maybe that will be enough to get their first win of the season.

Graceville (1-3) at FAMU (2-2) 6:30 CST pm - The Tigers fell to a good Blountstown team 14-3 last Friday. With that win Blountstown remained unbeaten on the season. Things won’t get any easier this Friday night as the Tigers travel to Tallahassee to take on the Baby Rattlers. FAMU lost their first two games to some tough competition in Tallahassee (Florida High and North Florida Christian). In fact they were held scoreless in both of those outings. But they have reeled off two wins by scoring 77 points, beating Cottondale 39-16 and Walton County 38-35. The Tigers will have to play their best game of the season to pull off an upset over the Baby Rattlers.

Sneads (3-2) – Open Date – The Pirates got a thrilling last second 21-20 win over the Jay Royals at home last Friday night. In addition to being a thrilling win, it improved the Pirates to 3-1 in district play and keeps them in the hunt for one of the two playoff spots for their 8 team district. They’ll have an open week this week as they prepare for a home contest next Friday against district foe Vernon. Mark Lawson continues to lead the Pirates offensively as he has over 500 yards in rushing and 12 TDs. Jamar White leads the “D” with 37 tackles and 18 assist.
