The Cottondale Hornets battled hard but came up short in a 13-8 loss on the road to the Maclay Mauraders. The Hornets had an opportunity in the closing minutes of the game to pull off the come from behind victory. But a fumble at the Maurader 4 yard line killed the drive and the Hornets come back hopes.
After a scoreless first quarter the host team took the lead on a 67 yard scoring run. The extra point kick was good and Maclay’s 7-0 lead held up until halftime. Maclay added to that lead in the third quarter with a 30 yard scoring pass to take a 13-0 lead. Cottondale responded with a drive that culminated with a Dominique Webb 3 yard scoring run. Drew Bellamy added the two point conversion run to narrow the margin to 13-8. That scored held for the remainder of the game as the Hornets fought to rally for the win but just could not cash in late in the game.
Webb led the Hornets on the ground with 176 yards and Cottondale won the stats battle in several key areas. They picked up 16 first downs compared to the Mauraders 9 and outrushed the Maclay squad 242 yards to 146 yards. But Maclay passed for 90 yards and came up with just enough plays to get the win. Cottondale falls to 0-3 on the season and will play host to FAMU this Friday night in their first district game of the season.
