The Cottondale Hornets played host to the Tigers of Jefferson County for homecoming this past Friday night and took it on the chin in a 53-14 loss to the visitors. The Hornets entered the contest looking for their first win of the season and got out of the gates in quick fashion. Nick Jackson returned the opening kickoff to near midfield to set the Hornets up in good field position. They drove down the field and Dominique Webb capped off the drive with a 13 yard scoring run. Webb added the two point play to make it a 8-0 lead for the Hornets.
But Jefferson County fired right back with a touchdown and extra point to cut into the Hornets lead. Cottondale led 8-7 but Jefferson County picked off a Hornet pass and returned it for a touchdown to capture the lead. The Tigers added to that lead moments later on a long scoring run of 43 yards to take a 20-8 lead early in the second quarter. Another score came later in the quarter and a two point conversion boosted the Tiger lead to 28-8. That score held until halftime but in the second half Jefferson County picked right up where they left off, scoring on a 50 yard run on the first play of the second half. From that point the Tigers went on to post three more scores on the evening. Cottondale’s second half excitement came on a Nick Jackson 75 yard kickoff return for a score. But the damage had already been done as the Hornets went on to fall by 39 points.
With the loss Cottondale fell to 0-6 on the season and 0-2 in district action. The Hornets will have this Friday off as they prepare for their next matchup on October 23rd in Niceville against new district member Rocky Bayou Christian School. With the win Jefferson County improved to 3-3 on the year and 2-0 in district play. Jefferson County’s Devondrick Nealy rushed for over 250 yards and had 4 touchdowns.
